  • BRIX Scale Explained -- Measuring Hard Cider and other Sweet Things
Today we're talking about about BRIX Scale, another agreat way to measure the sweetness of things like hard cider, wine, and even sweet corn! Hard cider is a nice change of pace for a beer nerd but I always look to learn more about my alcoholic beverages. Enjoy!

Did you know: Chemically, sucrose is made of one molecule of glucose bonded to one molecule of fructose.

I switched to a refractometer for measuring wort and beer, and it was a great decision.

I use a Refractometer for my wines and my home brews Way easier.

I don't have one (yet!) but it looks much much simpler

Just a clarification I'd like to post here, don't trust a refractometer as a Brix reading during fermentation, the alcohol content developing can throw off the light in the refractometer giving you a way different reading

why does the refractometer give me a 15% result when i measure pure alcohol?

An interesting question I've never tested. I think the answer has something to do with the design of a refractometer. It was designed to measure how light bends through a solution and estimate estimate alcohol content based on that. Since pure alcohol is not a solution I think that would throw it off significantly.

What do you mean : “ pure alcohol “ ?

Get that refractometer. There so much better than that glass tube that ALWAYS rolls of the table. Less solution at any temp. Save it for the F.G. readings. Cheers =)
