  • This is the second day on the Slab Platter Exercise for my Ceramics II students. This video shows the cleaning from the leatherhard stage to the carving of the design or pattern onto the surface- to proper drying technique. Tools used included surforms, scrapers, ribs, and carving tools. Here is the day 1 video: • Ceramics II Slab Platt...
The ribs and shredders/surforms which I use for cleaning the form are from Mudtools. I use both the polymer ribs and stainless steel ribs. My absolute, all-time favorite ribs. See the doc link below for product links on Amazon!

I am a high school ceramics teacher and potter. I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RUclips channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

I wish u were my art teacher in school, ours was a very old guy (he was also my mom’s art teacher when she was in high school lol) & he was great but we didn’t do stuff like this. It was more painting, drawing, coloring, markers, watercolors, etc. Basically just some pretty basic art stuff & learning about old master painting styles, why they’re interesting, how they differ from others, their ind. history, etc. I would’ve preferred to do this type of stuff. ☺️

So many new tools! I see your links to the Mudtools above but can you please tell me where I might get a flex curve? Would an art supply store carry something like that? Also, did you hand-make the edging tool that you use to shape the edge? If you purchased it, where can I find one? I've checked Mudtools and also Big Ceramic Store online but cannot find them. Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry- I just found this message- I missed it when you asked the question! If you google flexible curve, you will find lots of them... here is a link to Joannes: www.joann.com/flexible-curve-ruler/13702675.html?gclid=CjwKEAiArvTFBRCLq5-7-MSJ0jMSJABHBvp0dSIB21CYofXNatNwBXHEkrMbVqMuUTl5uiWha9lPShoCpJjw_wcB
      Or Amazon Prime! www.amazon.com/Staedtler-24-Inch-Flexible-Curve-97160-24BK/dp/B0006IK3LM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1488827416&sr=8-1&keywords=flexible+curve

Oh, and yes, if you are talking about the notched plastic card- I do make those! :-) Just one long, continuous curve cut in the edge of a card! :-)

You can find them under the name 'French Curve' as a drawing/ drafting tool. Art supply and drafting stores and online.

You are absolutely correct, Shellie! I apologize for that terrible focus! I no longer use that camera! :)

nice tutorial. only thing is your auto focus kept making it blurry

Yep- sorry about that! This was one of my original videos I shot after school one afternoon, just using the camera I had on hand! Learned that one the hard way- I don't use it anymore! ;-)
