I love how you know a lot about the vehicle before the review, but then when you're taking a closer look, you nerd out like a kid in a candy store. It's so much more authentic than any other "car reviewer" RUclipsr.
I don't know how you find outfits to coordinate with your review vehicles, but it is appreciated. Your entire attention to angles and aesthetics is amazing. Stay Awesome
I worked for Mercedes back in the Pleistocene era. They've ALWAYS been very engineering savvy. And the parts that make the car go, stop and turn have always been top notch. I'm not surprised that you were impressed. I daily, and love, my 1991 Mercedes Benz 250TD: Wagon. Diesel. 5 speed.
Steering wheel heat switch is on the left side of the steering column. I had to look it up in the manual - before that I used "Hey. Mercedes" too! For the seats, there is a switch on top of the second row seats near the headrest that will move them forward electronically. There's also a switch in the arm rests of the third row to open/close the seats (so you aren't at the mercy of someone to open them!). Smallest wheels MB supports are 21"; I bought a set for winter tires and have the 22" for the summers.
So Mercedes has resumed building vehicles to a standard, not a price point--you can spec a Jeep Grand Wagoneer to cost almost as much as this GLS580. Super review: thorough, on point.
Right, I was curious at what a Wagoner costs as I see a lot on the road and couldn’t believe that anyone would spend that kind of money on them when they could buy a MUCH better luxury SUV like this or BMW or Audi? IMO that’s a real kind of stupid there.
As always, a thorough and unbiased evaluation of a vehicle. Pretty sure I heard a meow coming from the catalytic converter… Butters? That jacket you had on in the vehicle is fire… pure class befitting a Merc. Thank you, Sarah. 👍👍👍
Somewhere you learned not only Mechanics (USAF) but also broadcasting speech. This vehicle was really impressive on your offroad segment: I was 'flabbergasted' by the low score you gave it, especially considering how it did with the wrong sort of tires.
Wow this is an impressive car! Both in styling, functionality, driving and off road etc. Obviously it’s a lot of money, but I think you get so much for what you are paying.
Just looking at it, the diff cover makes tons of sense. It has fins to dump heat, a drain plug, and it’s facing the technician. Unusual, definitely. An Improvement, i think so.
Sarah, the steering wheel heating switch is on the left side of the steering column behind the wheel. Not ideal, but once you develop some muscle memory on its location, it's easy to deploy. Or just use the voice control as you demonstrated.
The third row is a lot easier to get to than the way you did it. There is a button on the top of the second row seatback. That makes the seats automatically tumble forward.
Great review! 🙂 I have the previous generation (X166) and it's a very solid car. However, much of the engine maintenance is definitely outside of DIY capabilities. Like you saw, all the plastic tubing under the hood - that will crack and break. Besides the book time, techs and service advisors will often budget replacement of those parts in the repair because it's probably going to break 🙁 For the 2nd row, you got the back down... there is a pull handle (pull UP) behind the seat. That will fold it forward and a motor will move the 2nd row seat forward to make it easier to get in.
Totally DIY possible, just gotta get an FSM and read! I talked a friend of mine who is a cardiologist with no mechanical training into replacing valve/timing cover seals on her ML63 AMG and she knocked it outta the park.
@@SarahnTunedgreat outlook & inspiring lack of intimidation. The lack of longevity & logical design architecture is depressing in modern MB compared to their historical stance being the polar opposite, but as you said it's not impossible.
That's a 1st time goin up that hill backwards worked a treat . You're right about fuel consumption if you're gonna pay that much for it you aint gonna worry about the price of gas. over here ( nz) were paying just under $$3 bucks a litre
I don't know what goes into my upcoming suggestion, so disregard if you wish. It'd be interesting to know the actual distance it takes to stop from whatever speed you're traveling during the brake tests. It could be interesting to compare against other vehicles in the segment as well. Obviously, tires make a huge difference, but if it's what the manufacturer recommends, that's important to know as well.
If it’s similar to the previous generation there’s a button on the top of the second row seats that automatically collapse the seats forward for easy access to the 3rd row.
Great review as always, Sarah. Missed opportunity to test/show bounce mode in your off-road testing! Would have been perfect as you are more comfortable off-road and adventurous than most (besides WD ofc).
It's a hot V bc the exhaust ports are on the inside of the V, and thus turbos are put there for energy reasons. It's not hot bc the turbos are in there.
Interesting. Many of us will never drive a higher end vehicle that is an suv. Performance vehicles, yes. The kind that don't make sense. I'd like to see a long term maintenance profile. Thank you, Ms. Sarah.
Great review of an incredible car! I have generally considered Mercedes a bit excessive & unremarkable for their price point (i.e. the 2nd world war G-Wagon ( I drive a V8 Jeep Overland), but this SUV seems to knock it out of the park for its price range. I would struggle to justify the additional cost for a Bentley comparing it to this offering, which has been a consideration. Your review seems to have nailed the driveability & comfort considerations, especially that back-up the hill.😁 You would be an incredible Granddaughter to have along as a vehicle shopping companion. Cheers
I'd be curious to see your take on the full AMG version of this. I'm usually not a huge fan of the performance editions of normal cars, but since the GLS in any guise is super luxury _and_ you can get those gigantic monoblocks either chrome or black on the AMG GLS it'd be my pick if I had that kinda money.
The induction set up with the twin turbos along with their orientation and an electric supercharger is very similar to the Audi 2.9 set up is some of their RS models.
Given the prices of current offerings in the full sized SUV segment, this is very compelling. It is a bit surprising given the offroad capability the MB put very street oriented tires on it. Even 20's with some Pirelli Scorpion Zero's would have made a big difference. I've done some fairly light offroading in my JAG F-Pace with those tires and had no issues, ' cause, you know, sometimes you just have to get to the top of the next dune for afternoon tea ... or I'm a jackass.
"A V8 is ALWAYS Best" is a true statement. While the 580 is beautiful and no doubt accomplished, it will be a maintenance nightmare in later years. Better to get Lexus LX570 J200 which has the awesome 5.7L and is built in Japan. The previous gen Toyota Sequoia also with 5.7L would be my second choice but it is built in Indiana so slightly less desirable.
It was interesting to see that the front tires are 12 degrees warmer than the rear tires. Does the engine temperature affect the front tire pressure that much?
Top notch editing with the spec features... And please keep putting the cat noises in the videos... Make people look for things, that just are not there...🤠
I’m lucky enough to have the Mercedes Benz World nearby, (UK) and driving the G-Waggoner across their off-road course is so much fun. Unbelievable how slow a Merc can go up steep inclines, and also how much it can lean over, something stupid like 62°.
Got to love Sarah reviewing off road. Actually just got to love Sarah!
"Accelerate More Steadily During Thrust Articulation" -- solid advice, Mercedes.

Amazing off road review in a Merc monster. Nobody does it better!
"it's going off road anyway..." - exactly what I wanted to hear! Another top-notch review! Thank you for what you do and Stay Awesome!

That 3rd row seating demo was hilarious! 😂
Wait. Backing up a hill off road, who even thinks of testing that? Kudos Sarah.

That would be false, although you do do a lot of speaking in front of large groups of people when you reach the rank of E5.
@@SarahnTuned haha. do do.
@@SarahnTuned So true! Even in the USN.
On A/T tires, this would be an off-road beast. Really impressive already with those street tires.
Yep. PZero is just about the worst off road tire imaginable and this still pulled it off

Steering wheel heat button is on the tilt/telescope adjustment stalk.
That jacket is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great informative review. Considering that there is no low range, the Mercedes AWD system did an outstanding job going up the hill on street tires.
Excellent presentation from German engineers, thanks 🙏
That off road test with Pzero tires was a big surprise. I am sure MB was not expecting a reviewer to do that.

The stop and go feature can be disabled. Highly recommend disabling it.
I'm diggin the new special effects in your videos, Sarah! 👍
Sarah, your car reviews only get better and better. Thanks!
What's more impressive about climbing that hill is that it did it at 7,485lbs. It's a beast!
I really like that coat in the brake test section. It looks cool.
Aluminum does get "white rust" especially with road salt on it. Its gets eaten away faster than steel sometimes.
running boards are aluminum with rubber grip ovals
Always liked 4x4 Mrec's but I doubt I'll ever be able to afford one.. Great review, love that you actually put it up a hill and took it offroad!
Cooling for phone wireless charging. Neat!

Yes, the seat bolster test!!!!
I think the "hairy cardboard" material is better than plastic at absorbing sounds from the road. Its more of an NVH issue than cost or performance.
I used to work for MB - GLS is a solid vehicle. Hope you get to test the G Wagon, only MB vehicle made in Austria...
