  • The Surfline is known for its endless and beautiful scenery along the route. One place that definitely lives up to its name, is San Clemente, where the tracks meet the surf! This is also one section of the Surfline that hasn't been changed all that much, since it's not double tracked like the majority of the line is now.
    Unfortunately, changes are upon us. According to several sources, effective Friday, June 24th, 2016, San Clemente will officially become a wayside horn zone. This means, that trains will no longer be blowing their horns at the several crossings along this section of line. A recording of a train horn will be played, in place of the normal horns on the locomotive. Of course, this date is subject to change, but there's a low chance that it will change dates.
    After hearing word that this would happen, I went on 2 different occasions to San Clemente, to get some of the action and horns before they would be silenced. I traveled up and down the coast, catching trains at nearly every crossing along this section of line from just south of North Beach, all the way down to Trestles. Long walk, but worth it!
    You'll see Amtrak, regular Metrolink trains, and even BNSF locomotives pulling various Metrolink trains. Also saw some cool sights, including Amtrak #580 and #582 combined sets. 580's engine died in Laguna Niguel, forcing Amtrak 582 behind to push the disabled train set down to San Diego, causing nearly a 2 hour delay. I also managed to catch RBRX 18520, after not seeing it for several months, that was a nice surprise for sure! Our newest cabbage car (NPCU) is also featured, Amtrak #90229. I caught it departing the Pier station, with a decent sounding horn. Along with 90229, 90208 Veterans NPCU is also seen.
    Thanks for Watching!

    The trouble with the trains going through San Clemente is that they by law must blow their horns at 4 or 5 different crossings as they pass through. There are about 45 trains that pass through town each day and they blow their horns whether day or night. So train horns go off regularly past midnight and into the early morning hours and probably awaken thousands of people as they do so. People get pissed off if they are awakened each night and hence the desire for a quiet zone is born.

    Great video! Although I understand that communities don't like train horns, these fake locomotive horns at crossings sound ridiculous. There's one in Tacoma WA along Ruston Way and I almost laugh when I hear it.

    Why are there BNSF engines leading Metrolink trains?

    • @easternroutemainlinevideos6823
      @easternroutemainlinevideos6823 8 лет назад

      because the rotem cabcars are temporary out of service

      The reason why Metrolink is leasing BNSF locomotives is that it's for the safety of the crew and passengers. The rotem's cow catcher didn't stop the train from derailing with it hit a stalled pick up on the tracks in Oxnard last year. So when that was found out months later, a solution to Metrolink had was to lease more locomotives, so they chose BMSF AC4400CW's. They are still operating rotem cabcars behind BNSF engines to maintain capacity for passenger. So most cabcars will be acting as a coach until they get rebuilt to be safer, which is what Metrolink is doing soon.

      California is full of people who love celebs but hate loud noises. I really don't have much faith in humanity anymore.

      Neither do I...then why did they move to California if they hate noise??
