I'm a Brit living overseas and this is what my US friends struggled to understand. UK drag is more about performance than wearing a designer gown. It's based more in theatre and hosting at a bar, we don't really have a pageant scene. Of course you shouldn't look a total mess but UK drag is a bit more forgiving of looking rough. Tia has such a great fun energy, I'd rather see her show than someone who's gorgeous but has no personality. Also I loooove how the UK DR queens are rallying behind Victoria Scone! It's such a shame that she's getting nonsense on Twitter and so on, she's literally DRAG from head to foot and genderf*** is widely seen in the UK scene
Completely! Until Drag Race started to influence UK drag I can't remember seeing a queen lipsync unless it was to an iconic spoken piece (like lines from a movie) used as part of something else. Even if they used a commercial track it would be as if it was a backing track and they'd sing over the top of the original vocals (no matter how badly). I never once saw someone introduced onstage who just walked back and forwards in a very expensive outfit smiling or doing 'donkey kick, windmill, train slide, windmill, splat'. If the stereotypical Drag Race fan went to see a pre-Drag Race act in a working-man's club (where most queens used to make their best money) they'd not even know it was a drag act because it is so far from what they see on TV. Even in a traditional gay venue it would blow their minds because almost all club nights had at least one act with the comedic timings of Bob or Bianca. They *needed* to be quick and acerbic to survive the environment of drunk people who didn't give a shit whether they were there or not. They probably got paid in drinks or, at most, £20-£30 a night (working all night mind you, not two songs and an intro). Only clubs tended to have an entrance fee and a lot of drag was performed in pubs, which were free entry. When it came to nightclubs, many worked for free entry into the establishment as their 'fee' because they couldn't afford to get into the place otherwise. Thankfully the pay is usually better now, as are the general working conditions, but it's nothing like these $5,000 for a 30 minute appearance fees some US Ru Girls are allegedly demanding. The UK scene just can't support it outside of large-scale tours and mega-clubs like G.A.Y. I think that's why we've been seen as 'basic, hodgepodge or lacking' by non-UK people and those who are too young to know anything else. It's also why we've always been very accepting of anyone who wants to do drag, with any gender, sex, race or orientation being warmly welcomed. You're judged by commitment, talent and general demeanour and whether you wear designer clothing or Primark doesn't matter providing you have made a person's night out better than it would have been. 🖤 Rant over. =p
I'm not against cis female drag performers but what exactly is genderf**k about a woman dressing up as a more flemboyant woman? That's just a lateral move.
The Trollettes were amazing, great singers, incredibly funny and their drag was awful but no one cared because it was pure talent on that stage. No one will better them. Drag isn’t about expensive designer cloths and looking like a woman/man it’s about fun and talent. I never heard once someone say “that queen is an amazing lip syncer “ what I heard was laughter and sometimes I’d see tears. Live mic drag is the best
Tia is amazing and a perfectly genuine representation of British drag (before it became overly influenced by Drag Race). If you can capture an audience it doesn't matter if your outfit cost £10 - people came to be entertained and not to look at a moving page from Vogue. We used to buy £5 wigs and spray paint them with car paint and people LIVED for it. Now they would make a judgement about your whole existence if it wasn't a natural lace front hand-dyed by a named designer: that's before they even see what you can do on stage. The audiences have definitely changed and not necessarily for the better. 🖤
I loved Tia's Alan Turing inspired look. I thought it was sad people didn't get the reference but at the same time i think this underlines the importance of teaching LGBTQIA+ history in schools. I didn't know who Turing was either until i watched the movie with Benedict Cumberbatch and that's because we never talked about him when we learned about WW 2. I imagine it's because if they taught us about him they also would have been forced to talk about the fact that he was chemically castrated because he was gay, and this led him to end his life. Heck i am italian and i didn't even know Da Vinci was gay, he was tried for sodomy twice, but this part was always carefully omitted when we studied him in school. Schools need to stop erasing LGBTQIA+ people from history.
Tia is an absolute delight to have been given this boost to her platform from Drag Race, and a definite powerhouse of an entertainer and personality. She radiates a genuine energy - she truly does seem like she's sincere and honest, but still compassionate and empathetic, and it makes her even more enjoyable to listen to. You two make a great pair! I hope we can see her on Bootleg Opinions again sometime soon. :)
Tia is one of the most iconic queen on Drag Race UK. Even though her looks were not as flashy, she made up for it with her Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent 👌👌👌👌
My favourite Tia moment was when she walked past me and a friend when we were outside a club, out of our minds, as we looked at her she said ‘do you not recognise me, I’ve only been on the worlds biggest tv show’ - honestly love Tia energy! 😂👏🏽 ( Ps Sorry we were so drunk we didn’t clock it was you until you walked past us! We were not in a good way! 😭)
This week has been rough for me and I started a rewatch of UK S2…and Tia was seriously the best part. So this came right on time for me. Just the ‘Are you sure?’ When she was eliminated alone. She really lit up the werk room. It got so dull without her. Absolutely love the commitment to repping her Nigerian roots. Also as a NB I fucking loved Tia’s Turing suit. I would rock that anytime. It’d have to be like 4x as big because I’m not a supermodel but still. It does bug me that the expectation to spend a ton of money not every performer has really has invaded Drag Race all over. It puts queens who don’t come from wealthy families/position at a disadvantage. Which is why we see fewer QoC on all versions of things which is sad. We all lose out when we don’t get to see the spectrum of perspectives available.
I love Tia, she's like blue cotton candy, makes you feel calm and remember that life is for enjoyment and not everything has to be heavy and depressing (which is unfortunately the world's mood lately). Love you Tia 🇧🇷
The ice cream cone look (especially opposed to Joe Black’s extremely polished and inventive look) will forever be a part of the legendary episode 5 of season 2. #iconique
I love that the guest always participates in the ad. It gets me to watch the ad EVERY time! Also Tia will always have my respect for her Alan Turing look!
Thank you Yuhua for giving us life with Tia - one of my faves from the fantastic season 2!! I'd love to see Tayce next... then Bimini then Lawrence , A'whora, Ginny, bring them all !!
You can buy the RuPeter badge?! A queen should wear a handful of them for their entrance look, lol. "The winner of every challenge has arrived!" Tia Kofi was one of my favorites on Series 2, and I love she's officially a Bootleg Queen now. I feel like she'll slay an All Stars season one of these days.
Dude I haven’t even thought of that! Imagine buying a handful of RuPeter badges for your look and just walking onto the show decked out in them. Or better yet, in the werkroom.
it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing if you can entertain an audience. you don’t need money when you have talent, honey! i’m sure Tia has made a lil coin now so she can always buy some new outfits, but her talent, charisma, & sense of humor can not be bought. i love me some tia
PUHLEASE do a Thorgy Bootleg Opinions with Tia! Then Bob and Thorgy can respond since Purse First season is over for now. I would live my whole ass life.
Yuhua! I want your opinion. I feel like Valentino fucked up by dressing two clients in same outfits for the VMAS and the Met. Kacey Musgraves and Dixie Damelio wore what appears to be the same exact outfit but two different events, back to back.
Tia was one of my fave parts of DRUK s2!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Loved her so much!!! Tia, can you be my auntie? Also can we talk about how the brief for LGBTQ icon was a “look inspired by” and both Tia and Joe Black did it right and everybody else just cosplayed?!?!
I love Tia, such a genuine person, very beautiful and so, so funny! 💕😊 Can I also just say, not having Vogue-perfect outfits and still being iconique is punk as f@*k and that appeals to me so much. I think drag has a lot in common with the spirit of punk and that's what attracted me to it in the first place.
Hope you guys liked the video! I love using YouGov to make easy cash!

Stop getting my hopes up that Tia will pull a Shangela and turn up on season 3!!! 😜 🎁 👸

Both Veronica and Tia on S3. Bring back half the S2 cast lol
Tia needs to be on every season

I actually really like that British drag is less showy and the queens are super funny. It felt much less forced than USA RPDR.

When Tia comes back for an all star season, I think her ice cream look has the most potential for a glow up re-do.
I want to add on, that Alan Turing wasnt just not accepted, he was chemically castrated, eventhough he was essential to ending the war

It’s the da Vinci erasure for me 🤪🤪
OMG YuHua stop outdoing yourself every week. YuHua x Tia Kofi is the bootleg combo we needed to end corona and homophobia.
Bootleg is her to conquer the world! 🌎
People forget you can upgrade a look or two, you can’t buy comedy timing and charm lol tia is the whole package
"I finally started doing drag on episode 4, that's great!" I love Tia so much

With Tia, it was INSTANT love - a smart, funny queen is ALWAYS on my "list of queens who should win" - her confessionals were legendary.

I adore Tia - and my favourite look was the Alan Turing one - thought she nailed it - and the reasoning? Spot on!
The ice cream cone look (especially opposed to Joe Black’s extremely polished and inventive look) will forever be a part of the legendary episode 5 of season 2. #iconique
Tia doesn‘t get enough credit for that stunning MUG
