I always wanted to meet Delta Burke and thank her for this episode. I've had weight problems all my life and she helped me feel like less of a joke and more of a person. She helped me feel human. First time I saw this episode was the first time I looked in a mirror and smiled at what I saw and was genuinely happy.
this is hilarious.. they act like she's a hideous ogre.. but she's absolutely gorgeous.. beautiful.. stunning.. and moderately overweight.. she still looks better than her thinner counterparts 😂
That is exactly what I think. She looked healthy to me, but the writers used her as a punch back. I would have been more concerned about other actresses who were really underweight.
That’s because In the 80’s and 90’s women who were young had to be pencil thin and look like they just came off a swimsuit category. I remember Delta Burke was the bunt of jokes on sitcoms and late night when I was a little kids. Personally, I thought that she was hella sexy back in the day. Today her weight would be applauded.
Meshach was also a good friend of hers. He consoled her on the set when she was going through the tabloid onslaught and the hardship of fighting with producers.
Delta is still the most beautiful woman that has walked this earth!! She is just as, if not more beautiful Elizabeth Taylor. She is just as strong a woman as she is beautiful!!! She's still winning!!! What a light she is in this dark world . Her husband is a very loyal man and very lucky to have her . As she is lucky to have him ... god bless !!!! Delta you are always in your thoughts and memories are great keep it up ... you are the best!!!
I love all four gorgeous and talented ladies of the original cast, but the adorable Ms. Burke remains my favorite. When she's on screen, you can't take your eyes off her. Heavy or slim, and everywhere in-between, she's always beautiful, inside and out!
This was insane!!! Who the heck's business was it anyway?? I can't believe it was on the news and all the attention it was given!! I want to scream!! She was not fat at alllll!!!
Black Calla Lily ~ This wasn't always the case. In the 1700's 1800's & the turn of the century early 1900's, being plump was thought of as attractive. That didn't start to change until the 1920's with the "flappers"...
The 80s were so cruel to women in show business. It's so hard to comprehend that Delta Burke was considered "fat". She could not have been more than a size 12-14. I was a teen in those years and I was probably a size 14-16 and I struggled with eating disorders until my late 30s. It's a relief to know that today body positivity is being taught to kids. Ignore cruel bullies and trolls and love yourself.
It's even worse now.....practically every young woman on TV is a size 2 or 0. Those sizes are impossible for most women to be without resorting to extreme measures. Look in a fashion magazine like Vogue---the models look starved. This obsession with thinness has spiraled out of control and is now a mental health issue.
@@msr1116 You're correct. When you watch older shows like this one, you notice how real the women look (well compared to today). These days Dixie Carter would be considered fat or overweight. I wish body positivity was taught when I was young. I wish that obesity as an addiction was taken more seriously back then. I was 5'4 and 120 when I was 10. My PE teacher told me I was fat. I weighed more than she did. That was the start of my disordered eating. I look at pictures from back then and I looked so good. Not too fat, not too thin, perfect for a woman my height and body type.

People can be so cruel. Delta Burke looked wonderful. I remember people used to made fun of Facts of Life with Lisa Whelchel and Kim Fields how fats they were. Also Candice Cameron DJ from Full House she was the same way, was making fun of her too. People are so nasty and cruel.
Tracey Gold from Growing Pains developed an eating disorder and so did Susan Dey during her Partridge days. People in entertainment are seriously screwing with teen and preteen minds about their weight and body image and you can bet they're doing it to kids, too.
Delta was nominated for an Emmy award the year "They shoot the fat women" aired. She should have won. She lost to Kristy Alley of "Cheers: who herself was the subject of weight gain in the media years later.
She's a classically beautiful woman. It's sad that women in Hollywood in the 80s were suggested to such harsh standards. What a shame. It's still bad today, but you can see women like Aidy Bryant having success without her weight being the main part of her character's personality.
I do not understand that the media focused on Delta's weight. But the media never focused on Bea Arthur gaining weight. Yes, Bea did hide behind her clothes but from the first season from seventh season Bea did gain weight and by the seventh season she wore baggy clothes to cover her weight gain. I am sure the clothes person tried to do the same with Delta. I love Bea Arthur and Delta Burke and they were and still are beautiful today.
Jason Gibson uhh, no. Sorry, not comparable at all. Bea Arthur didn't gain drastic weight. She aged over the years, which all people do. And her character wasn't supposed to be a vain and superficial former beauty queen.
As much as I hated Linda Bloodworth-Thomason's decision to fire Delta Burke over this very issue, Delta's character was specifically built around a beauty queen persona. Which is why they always pushed this point. Personally, I felt *Designing Women* wasn't the same once Delta was gone, as she was my favorite on the show (MaryJo being my second fav). Comparing Suzanne, to Dorothy is far from a fair argument. The age difference, the type of character, the clothing they wore, etc... Very different women in their perspective shows. The simple truth is, women have always been judged by their appearances, and that is not likely to change anytime soon...
That's because no one challenges an older person putting on weight. It's just overlooked as "Oh it's part of aging after 50." But I didn't really notice Bea Arthur putting on weight. The outfits they were putting her in, especially the formal wear, was sadly in fashion back in the 80's. Are you sure you're not thinking of Rue McClanahan, whose outfits did see to get looser over the course of the show?
The writers were making fun of her in several episodes. It must have been so humiliating for her during that class reunion episode, as well as the episode where they went to that spa.
Rather strange if that were the case, as there are some people who have thanked Delta for doing that class reunion episode because it made them appreciate the fact that they were not alone in their own weight struggles. If the writers were looking to tease or poke fun at Delta, it blew back in their faces, as they seemed to have wound up doing a service in the end. Kudos to Delta for going along with those jokes, as she would have been well within her rights to walk off the set if they hurt her. There is a difference between being professional & tolerating a hostile workplace.
You mean the episode called "They shoot fat people.dont they?" I read she wanted that episode the weight gain could be addressed ...and honestly they did a great job on it ahowing how hurtful people can be and how to be the better person.
I tell ya to each their OWN. To be Healthy is all that matters big or little. I Loved Delta then & Love her still & so sad, it really damaged her then BADLY then & I hope she's recovered....she was and IS a Wonder Woman. Xxo
There are too many shallow people in this world that don’t care about hurting others. They feel superior when they are insulting people when the reality is, they are showing their flaws and lack of character. Build people up instead of tearing them down. Show kindness, it never goes out of style. Have a great day everyone !
It wasn't really replaced, just "gained some weight in your face" and then the rest was cut out, possibly for more commercial time when it was syndicated. They have a lot of little tidbits like that cut out in The Golden Girls, I don't know if it's taken out if you have the DVD though, if you get The Golden Girls all the tidbits are put back in.
I believe there are a lot of beautiful women that just a plus size which are still desirable to men. So I wish they stop putting pressure on actresses to look under weight.
Same with models. A big size is a 4 or 6 and they can't get work. They have to be size 2 or under and like 6ft tall. Ridiculous. Look up famous models of the 1970s. Not one looked emaciated.
To me Delta Burke was the most beautiful woman ever to grace a television screen and rivaled some of the great classic Hollywood beauties as well! So much was made of her weight gain I guess because she was known for playing sexy characters on TV but let's be real compared to today's standards she really wasn't fat at all!

It amazes me how people can only see the negatives. This woman will be stunning until Jesus comes again and they can't get past her weight. The truth of the matter is people hate what they see in themselves and will call Others out on it. (I'm about to get Biblical) "Let he that is without sin, cast the first stone." In other words, don't point fingers until your own life is"Perfect". Delta is a jewel. I would go so far as to say a treasure. She is a consummate actress and priceless human being. There are few stars that are willing to be completely Real and forthright about the good AND the bad in their lives. Her story has touched so many people and possibly saved quite a few. If you didn't love her before, you certainly should now...I mean unless you are completely heartless then.... I have missed seeing her sweet face, but I am so happy that she and Gerald found each other. It was time for her to be Happy.

Sooooo the producer wanted to write an episode about Delta being “fat” but was unsure about it until the tabloids started beating her confidence into the ground? Women can be other Women’s biggest critics and it has nothing to do with patriarchy…just flat out MEAN. While pile on and kick her while everybody else is. 😒
This p!sses me off. Pretty much ALL of us gain weight in our mid to late 30s. Some mire than others. I was one who gained more due to depression from my mother passing away. But I had started gaining a little before then. All of my male friends were no longer that perfect 32×32 jean sz after 35. Weight can be lost. Morals you either have them or you don't. I don't think the tabloids of the producers of this show should hv treated Delta this way. She has always been gorgeous & She will always be. I remember feeling terrible for Elizabeth Taylor after she began aging & gaining weight. The late night talk shows made their living degrading this beautiful woman. I think that's the common denominator here. The more gorgeous the woman the more people want to tear her down. Delta got the last laugh again. She's happily married to the love of her life. Ill take that over being skinny & alone anyday.
Delta always was, and always will be a class act. we're proud and happy that she and Gerald call New Orleans home.

They all forget to mention how beautiful she was -- it didn't matter how much weight she gained, she still had one of the most gorgeous faces.
She wasn't even that fat?! What the hell?! Delta was such a gorgeous woman regardless of size
I agree. I think the issues stared even before she started gaining weight. They made jokes about her eating habits from the begging of season one.
Things were different at that time. Body image has completely changed now.

Upsetting how people think they know what her healthy weight is, even though they clearly didn’t care about her health with those headlines.
Love Her ❤
She didn't look that fat to me .
The whole cast were great but I thought Suzanne shined brightest.
Designing Women lost their # 1 comedian actress when Delta left the show. All the other ladies were great but Delta was the shining star.
I agree!!!!!
She has been criminally ignored as a comedic actress and treated horribly. Misogyny has so many victims, it's awful and ruins lives.
And what is really sad, most of the people treating her that was were other women.
Like Julia said that face will always remain.
People love to make you out to be worse off than you really is. I'm just saying. 💜💜💜
They act as if she's enormous. She isn't Whitney Thore, ffs.
Fat doesnt mean ugly. Fat means over weight.
In fact only 15 over
Once Delta was let go from the show,I stopped watching.it just wasn’t funny anymore!!
Today no one would care about her weight.
Delta was so courageous facing her weight gain and gigantic rear end.
