New leo owners: DONT DO THIS. Will your gecko survive like this? Sure. Will it be happy and thrive? Absolutely not. Theres so much wrong here its hard to list but I'll try. 1. Zero lighting. Leos benefit from a difined day/night cycle as well as exposure to UV-B. 2. Not enough ventilation at all. Two little vents? Come on. 3. Not enough hides. Hides are super important to leos, it's where theyll spend most of their time furing the day while they sleep. 3 hides is honestly a minimum. One moist to help them shed and two dry split between the hot and cool side of the tank. 4. An almost completely bare tank...this is bad for so many reasons. There's no enrichment here for your pet. Theres also no clutter or cover, which aside from being boring for you and your animal will also possibly stress them out. 5. Heating is extremely important for your pet, and heating mats are highly recommend against. Not only are there much better options but you should have either a dimming thermostat attached to it or a way to check temperature other than YOUR HAND in order to make sure your pet does get too hot or too cold. 6. Space. This plastic tub is just so bad. No pet deserved to live its life in something like this. As a temporary measure it could work, but the minimum permanent size for an adult leo that you want to be happy and theive is a 20gal long. This tub is like half that. 7. Food. First, mealworms arent a great staple food for leos. Crickets or dubia roaches are better for their usual diet. Second, 60 large mealworms at a time?? Wild. Look up actual feeding routines for leopard geckos cause this aint it. This might be acceptable for breeders that have hundreds of geckos to house at once, but those geckos arent living like this their whole life. Housing a fully grown gecko like this as a pet boarders on abusive. Why would you want to house a little buddy like this? Its not good and you can't even watch them. In all honesty and in my opinion this seems like something a breeder put together to sell more geckos to people who think a proper setup is just too much for them.
I agree with most of this, but as the recent WWR controversy exhibitioned, to point #6. A 20 gallon long only has a 2x1ft footprint. If sufficient ledges and climbing space aren't added in a 20gal (and most don't) this tub actually has more floor space at 2ft×17in, than a 20 gallon long. I personally wouldn't keep one in smaller than a 40gal at this stage. About 20 years ago I kept 3 in a 40 because at the time all the big breeders were cohabbing in colonies like that. I was fortunate to not have issues but it's not something I think I would do now
@@tipping_scales 20gal longs are 30x12 so they're much closer to the footprint of this tote. They're also 12in tall, so the lid of the tank isn't inches from the gecko's head like this hefty tote. I think a 40gal is what every adult gecko should have, but like I said: lots of people agree 20gal long is a bare minimum. So I generally agree with you. This tote however, regardless of footprint, should be considered animal abuse as far as permanent housing of a gecko goes.
You definitely need a thermostat on that heat mat! There is no excuse for not unsung one. I cannot believe a breeder wouldn’t include that info. You also need thermometers as well. You have no way to know what temps are!
Hold up… you’re telling me that the 40qt is too small? All these breeders that are bashing this man have their geckos in smaller tubs then this 40qt. That Leo has the same, if not more room (compared to body mass) as I do in my studio apartment. The sand which containers I do see a problem with but this is basically a 10-20 gallon tank. I’m not here to back some of the things he’s done but I really don’t see a problem with a 40qt tub
@@maven86 but he’s not using overhead lighting? I’ve always gone with what BHB reptiles and they state a 28qt is fine? I’m not trying to be a jerk, I’m genuinely asking because I’m new to the hobby and I’ve only gone off what BHB recommended.
@@christopherdiienno4154In the hobby there’s been a big difference between the husbandry provided by breeders and what an increasing amount of pet owners demand. Breeders tend to only use what is needed for survival rather than providing the ideal habitat for enrichment and high quality heat (infrared A instead of just infrared C). This is all just to save space for more and more geckos, not provide the gecko with the most ideal habitat. There are some breeders that are making sure to provide their reptiles as much enrichment as possible even if they provide space that’s smaller than what pet owners would want.

Question: Would giving the enclosure a large mesh widow on the lid of the effect the humidity in a negative way for the gecko? Or is it better to just have those small ventilation holes?
Heating pads really aren’t great at heating through tubs & aren’t great overall. Animals are not used to heat coming from under, as that is not where the sun would be.
these heat pads do heat pretty well. Most leopard gecko tubs do have under the tub heating such as heat tape. But yes I prefer over the head heating like you said, if the gecko is in a tank :D
Need your help bro, i just got one from a family member a couple days ago, came with 2 bulbs. My room temp at night is anout 70 to 75 at night . I was wondering the red night light is necessary at night or is it bad for they’re eyes. Also humidity is around 70 at night but i can be wrong because im not sure if the round humidity gauge and temperature gauge are accurate . Please help lol idk what to do
Never use a red light. They don’t need heating at night unless temperatures drop to 60 Fahrenheit. Also, don’t take advice from this guy. Look at books, articles, and ask professionals (ie: store employees that specialize in reptiles).
Hi Frank. I'm a beginner, and here is a typical beginner question. What should be my major concern in keeping one? For instance...I also keep fish, and my major concern there is water quality. Thank you.
Honestly no concern. Leopard geckos are the most hardy reptile to start with and very rewarding and inexpensive to maintain. We have a detailed caresheet on www.geekygeckocreations.com and also remember these tips: 95-100 hot spot, humid hide, mealworms or crickets dusted with calcium w/ d3 and those are the main essentials :D
I recommend looking at reptifiles care guide. Not geekys. There's a lot wrong with his care guide that I can see and it is so much better to look at an advanced herpetologists care.
My best tip is find a better channel to watch. Don't pick your gecko up by the tail, don't keep them in plastic totes. There are so many creators showing how to do this right, this channel ain't one of them from the looks of things
@@tipping_scales these are plastic tubs and most people have no idea what a thermostat is so this set up is purely meant for the newer keepers that dont prefer to put in as much time or money investment. This happens alot so we need a trustable solution for these newer keepers :D
How much would it cost me to get this whole kit set up was out of leopard gecko and including as well if any at all and taxes I live in Dacono, Colorado ?
I have 4 of them in a 75 3 females and one male they all come out at night but love to be sprayed down at night I do twice a week an it helps them shed stimulates there instincts to roam and hunt they love it

BHB reptiles - “ For an adult: It is great if you can get them into at least a 20 gallon or slightly larger tank for extra room. As far as a tub, I would a 28 quart tub or larger is fine. “ where’s their backlash? I can add more sources from “reputable” breeders from a simple google search.

Sadly 28 quarts and 28 gallons are very different please research this for proof. The owner of the channel did not even clarify that in his response the two tank sizes are different which shows how much knowledge this unethical and abusive breeder has also if you look more around the channel he picks up his leopard gecko by the tail and it can make them lose there tail thinking they are not safe please do more research before trying to help and support and abusive breeder.

No, nothing is right, bigger terraium, more substrate, never help people with leos, you know nothing about them.

@GeekyGeckoCreations heating pads aren't good for leos. They cannot regulate the heat from underneath, they need it from above.
