Character lore has nothing to do with essence lore. Essence lore is separate (hence why FO didn’t get a skin in Naiad’s essence while Fiona did). It has to do with what the lore of the essence itself is and what the theme is
I like how in the universe of this game people are devided into 2 categories: a hunter or a survivor (and the main feature of that is the eyes). The transformation of Luchino from a prey to a predator and the way it was shown is a chef kiss

Luchino was a atheist scientist who had a obsession with lizards and snakes so he would buy rare lizards from people to study them one of the lizard he bought was actually a human who was cursed by yidhra for sacrificing a snake ( snakes are holy symbol of yidhra) luchino accidentally get bitten by the cursed lizard and got the cursed himself too altho luchino See's it as a blessing and a significant step on human evolution ( that's bc he got the best part of the curse XD)

Nothing happened to the rat, but he mutated to the Luchino hunter (Evil reptilian). In this backstory is different, because he only becomes half reptile.
