    I got a few for the newbs (welder/fitter/fabricator of 7 years)
    - Don't be caught BSing with the union guys/old heads , even if you only trust yourself to sweep the floor do that, check gas bottles, change them out if they are low (not while someone is welding lol) do anything but stand around do anything to be productive but don't wait for instruction, sometimes people will intentionally give you no task just to see what you do.
    -If you see someone struggling, with say setting up rigging as an example, and your walking by.. your ass better lend a hand.
    -Don't badmouth anyone, because a dude from 1st shift may have nailed the mother of dude on 2nd, but you better believe he will sing like a bird to that same guy on 2nd about this newjack talking all kinds of shit about him.
    -Do Not be afraid to get your balls busted for being a hard worker AKA "kissass". Because the lazys will never progress, but the Mules will (A mule is a guy that does all the work, and the vets exploit this). BUT, on that same note don't be a kissass, in other words keep your head down but work your ass off. Don't ham it up with the foreman like he is you're drinking buddy, but don't be scared to put your coworkers work ethic to shame. Management will notice and you become an asset.
    -DO NOT be a know it all. I don't care if you can stack dimes better that Justin T. at spring break, don't act like you can. Be humble ask for guidance even if you don't think you need it.
    -A huge one TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR WORK, don't be that guy that leaves garbage for another shift to clean up. If you're rushing at the end of the shift and blow 2ft of porosity 5 min before shift change, your ass better stay and grind it out even if its on your time. This will gain you respect with your coworkers and the people that keep money in your pocket.
    -When someone ask you to go find the bulkhead stretcher or the kanooter valve your ass better go find it... lol

      I'm fresh out of high school last year. I just put in my two weeks but didn't burn any bridges on my last job. I was a welder but ended up taking over somebody's job that blew all their opportunity down the drain for drugs. I was getting kind of tired of cleaning parts that came off a laser. So I decided to move up and go to a cement mixer truck factory. I'm a week in And I love it but there's so much more to learn. They're always is of course which is a good thing! That is one thing I hate when I have nothing to do, but I'm definitely that guy that looks for something to do! But being young and new I try not to push boundaries and ask for instruction. I never want to do something I wasn't supposed to without orders. Also I love your advice too thank you! I was never that smart in a high school to be completely honest but being a thoughtful, helpful person that's willing to bust ass and put in the effort has really paid off so far. I'm also very open to learning new thing! That's my advice for anybody reading this my age. Being unexperienced, it is easy to lose courage but taking it day by day really shows over time what you can pursue when you put your mind to it. I definitely learned that at my last two job.

    I'd like to suggest for folks new and with experience that if you're going to make travel and field work you're career that you should buy yourself a travel trailer. Save the money on hotel room expenses and rent when you get laid off or down time between work you've always got a roof over your head. It doesn't have to be a brand new one but no beaters. Keep it modern so you're welcome to stay at any RV park with it. See if your job has set up an area or you can very often find a local guy with a spot you can park it really cheap. In fact I rent 2 spots now to two guys here in the area to improve our bridges for next few months. They both enjoy and greatly appreciate it. It saves them the money and gives them a safe place to park their rigs and keep their belongings. Power, water, sewer included. It doesn't have to be your only home but it does have to be your home away from home and it's always a roof over your head if it needs to be.

    I know it's "morally ambiguous", but the "LIE LIE LIE" part is SO true.
    I used to work warehouses and shipping, receiving billing ect and the ONLY reason I ever got even a foot in the water was by lying about knowing how to run a forklift.
    Tip to everyone:
    Someone asks you if you know how to run a forklift, say "YES" It's easier than a lawnmower and hella fun.
    You can get proficient with just about any piece of equipment (complexity not withstanding) in about a DAY by just following instructions to the "T" and when you get comfortable, that's when you get GOOD-

    Great advise to the new guys brother! I would like to add, as someone who started out 20 years ago with zero construction knowledge and no formal schooling, I started out sweeping the floors... literally. Get your foot in the door doing whatever is asked of you. Work hard and it will pay off.

    Best advice, join a union. It cuts out alot of the worries. You don't have to worry about finding work they will find it for you. You don't have to worry about chain of command just don't talk to white hats. Any union craftsmen on the job will help you. Everyone will know you're an apprentice so they won't expect you to be an expert and your Forman won't put you in a position you won't be able to handle. To put it simply, the union will take care of you.

    Combo Welder/Fabricator of 5 years here. Very solid advice. Hard work earns respect 9xs out of 10. Never kiss ass and remember to try and be your best with every weld every day. Pretend you're building this for your kids or whatever you have to in order to ensure those safety critical welds are done correctly. Keep on keepin on.

    I'm starting school in a week to become a welder, I don't have much money for classes so I decided to go with stick welding! I've never had a welding job, but my father has been a welder all his life and continues to bust his ass every day! When you said Hard work will always earn you respect, I almost heard my father telling me the same! I'm not very good at welding since he never got the time to teach me so I'm starting with school... and I know that no book in the world can teach you what the world can teach you but hey it's a small step for a bigger future! I was sort of nervous when I though about my future as a welder, but I saw this video and it helped a lot man! I know I love this craft, I know that it's going to be hard, but I know I won't let myself down! Thanks for the advice man!

    Retain what you've been told (don't keep asking the same question)
    Don't question the answers (Don't debate)
    Be confident, but also be humble
    Don't complain!!

    100% accurate on the hard/dirty work. people look at guys like that and go "hes a hard worker but he is not in the know. Ill take him under my wing teach him a few things." Hard workers generally show that they are willing to do anything and so they become an asset for the crew

    I appreciate you saying hard work earns respect regardless of skill level and do the shit no one else wants to do. I'm in my first year as welder and well, I don't weld a whole lot. I run leads, get tools, and clean up most of the time. Lots of guys I went to welding school with are going to have a hard time adjusting their attitudes when they have to eat the humble pie on a job site.

    -- signed, engineer who has worked with welders, and similar tradesmen on many occasion.
    There is nothing better then a helpful tradesmen if I show up and have some questions or need some basic help with a new design.
    I have never had a problem with direct questions from a trademen... in fact I love it.
    We understand if you had a bad day, etc, but good engineers won't forget if they realize someone is totally incompetent or is an asshole.
    Good engineers love to show off their knowledge or opinions so do not be afraid to ask even something you might think is simple. If someone is not answering your question or rambling just interrupt and say "no.. I was asking..."

    Wise words. This applies to many professions involving work sites. It is way too easy to spot the new guy off in his own little world. It's good to get involved with people who make the place tick, get in it and don't hold back.
    Also, wise to not piss off the boss or anyone important, rank is important because they can kick your butt off site. Press issues if you're worried about safety, genuine issues.
    Dig your videos, shows some real life work.

    Good advice, very useful information. I've found job to weld marine constructions, they took me just because of my certificate, I have good skills but not much experience, and they dismissed me in 4 hours. But I seen there some brand new welders who were not better than me, but manager told that he haven't got time to raise me to high level and he need professionals. But I will keep looking for new companies and get experience from each, and some day I hope I will find a good work with good payrate.

    A lot of good advice here. Those are about the same kind of questions I ask whenever I take a weld test. I'll also ask if there is a time limit. There is almost always a time per test coupon but once in a while you'll find a lax QC guy. I also make sure to ask if they need to see the finished coupon before breaking it off. I knew a guy who laid down some perfectly fine weld but was failed because he took his plate down before the QC said so. The only thing I can't get behind is liying, mainly because I hate lying, and it's currently pissing Rolondo off. He's already fired one guy for not being the welder/ironworker he claimed to be and had to demote two guys from welding.

    If you don't need to certify, at least make your welds look pretty.
    Your first job, you should practice PERFECT form, always using both hands and body position (this will help you later when you need to weld or use a torch with ONE hand, out of position).
    Have the tools you need at all times, depending on each specific job. If you don't know certain things, like penetration, or how to set up a gouger, expect to be fired after 90 days (you will only learn these things if there is a "points system" in place, and the head welder wants some time off). NEVER use a tool for something other than what it was intended for. ALWAYS tour the facility on your lunch break, asking questions, and when nobody's looking, write down what you learned. You will constantly be tested, so show your loyalty by paying close attention and figuring out what was told to you. Remember, safety is always first, don't let anyone tell you differently. NEVER look directly at the arc, and move yourself up to an 11 or even 12 shade lense as you master the dark (you will be surprised)

      You will be fine. Be open to criticism, watch, listen and learn. Find who is best and follow their lead. Hood down, and find your routine.

    I've got a question. I spent 4 years in welding school only to have every job in a 50mile radius turn me down because I don't have experience. What should I do? I've looked at apprenticeships with the ironworkers Union but I don't have the money for it. And there are none anywhere near me.

    • @BadassWeldingVideos
      @BadassWeldingVideos  7 лет назад

      you must offer value to your perspective employeer. offer to work for nothin, offer to be a helper.... what ever gets you in the door, start somewhere, and work up.
      honest question- why did you spend 4 years in welding school?

    • @mason003
      @mason003 7 лет назад

      Badass Welding Videos Ok! I'll definitely try that out. And it was more, I took 4 separate welding classes over the course of 4 years. From more industrial classes to sanitary TIG stuff, just to learn everything I could while I was at my last job.

    I have10 years experience welding in shops with very little field work. Looking at going into welding on thd road. How easy or hard is the transition? how do rig welders veiw shop welders? Any comments or opinions good or bad welcome.

      guys i work with have worked everywhere, fab shops, plants, pipeline, oil field... all in a days work, where ever life takes you. you will be looked down on only for being a bad welder, not for being a shop hand. when you get out there, earn respect, dont ask for it.

    Do you lie about your age on the field or just to get the job? I'm 19 and started pipe welding but haven't gone to a job. I wouldnt be against starting out as a helper or tacker also I've been told I have a baby face

    Is it wrong for me to work in a shop straight out of welding school? All my friends are working on pipeline or shutdowns. I'm young and have a real good work ethic but I can't see myself doing shutdowns at this point. I've ruled out working on pipeline altogether.

    why fixed shade instead of auto?

    • @Hippocrab
      @Hippocrab 7 лет назад

      because there are tight spots that the sensors wont always detect and youll flash yourself. getting used to fixed shade will make you a better welder so when you use auto, youll appreciate fixed more.

    • @Gavreeli
      @Gavreeli 7 лет назад

      Hell of a lot cheaper to replaced a broken fixed shade lens than an auto. The hoods themselves are super cheap to replace if you bust one. The
      FiberMetal in this guy's videos only cost like $60 and they are super
      light weight. Nice fixed shade hoods are really light weight, and you can still get an auto lens to put in them, like the Arc One lens.

    wont they expect that you show what you said you knew how to do, if you stated on a application or a interview if you have a certain skill or experience. so i dont know exactly how the lie system works. i went to welding school now i am in school to weld on trains and repair them.

    • @BadassWeldingVideos

      there are many jobs that say 5 years exp, the lie "yes, i have over 5 years exp" .... easy

    • @kevinanderson8511
      @kevinanderson8511 7 лет назад

      i would have to figure out how to go about that lol . Yet again i ended up getting a interview at a place that welded and fabricated bridge parts and they wanted five years experience, but i got a chance because my instructor knew higher ups there. but when i went to go take the weld test i got arc blow, everybody else but me didn't get arc blow. Because the bridge code is strict to begin with there was no lee way and i couldn't even grind out any welds or anything. love your videos man! Keep on at that weld Grind!!

    sorry im going through your videos expect allot of comments. Like the shit.
    Your boots are something everyone will look at ive learned wear your old boots to a new job then upgrade with the new jobs paycheck.
    INFORM the guys you are working with this is your FIRST field job out of school this will save you being bitched out for stuff that is "simple" to the crew but not to you.
    "GTFO" town money yes. contacts yes, NEVER BURN BRIDGES. The dont lie part FUCK yes i've had to go back and go over shit welds that were support beams with a U top going into roof plate and the person said i could do that! well no with 3" on clearance from the bottom of plate to weld you dont trucking drag the rod bend it and do a bit at a time. When someone has to cut it all out and refab the U plate and re install it you're fired.
    Just be nice on field and in shop check all your shit. Make sure everything youre doing isnt fucking up your team mates.
