Hi Guys...soooo enjoy watching you in your beautiful garden. I'm 70 and just spent 2 weeks removing sod from an area in my 7 year old garden. All the sod is being used to create a small berm in front of electrical boxes. I then plan the cardboard, compost and mulch topping to plant some smaller sized evergreens. Used this method to plant and mulch a row of fruit trees up my hilly side yard. Worked great. Too many underground wires to contend with. Currently laying paver edging as well. A little at a time. So slow going at my age but so satisfying! Love, love, love your garden. PS. I'm zone 5b as well.
Hate that you’re about to get the heat wave. I have been dying! I’ve got over 60 plants to get out and we are seniors who can’t handle the heat well. I just want to see everything in the ground that I’ve bought to see how it plays together! I’ve listened to y’all and others about design and really tried to be aware of contrast…But I did attempt the look you have with the bobo hydrangea, peach berry ice and Veronica. I have watched you tube videos of garden tours for over a year and can’t find anything that came close so I attempted to recreate it in mine to a certai extent. I must not be alone; the hardest part was finding the peach berry ice. Hopefully you are flattered and not offended. That area of your garden is what got me hooked when I saw it last year. That is great to hear that you are trying to do the Peachberry and Ever After combo. Sometimes pieces of a "recipe" can be harder to find but hopefully you come across it soon enough. Peachberry comes back for us every year too.
Oh my, the Troemner spruce always blows me away. The unique architecture with slightly weeping branches and intense color are spectacular. There are plenty of pretty and weeping blue spruce, but this one just hits different!

🤔 Looking at the aerial view. How about placing poles along the back of berm. Like a hole and wood or metal pole held in place with cement. Then running chicken wire from pole to pole. Run another roll above the first to give you 8 ‘ to 12’ of height?! Chicken wire is economical and would disappear, without blocking the view beyond. The poles could be placed strategically behind the greenery.

I wish you two would find a large space in the back of your garden for a Rhododendron. They look like an Azalea, only so much better. They are truly fabulous.
Lots of deer and bunnies in my yard, very destructive. I now plant only things they avoid. My lavender and herbs, lantana, artemisia, cleome, Shasta daisies, rosemary, catmint, geraniums, and more do very well. Liquid fence works pretty well but must be sprayed daily. Love your videos. You guys are amazing and the quality of your videos is very professional. Good job!!!

You know what I heard from an old school farmer. “Human hair “. They said sprinkle it in your bed, it repels the deer. I haven tried it but they swear by it.🤷🏾♂️
Good Q&A! I could look at that overhead drone view of your property all day long, so much interest all the way around. It does make me curious though, if you were to do a large project like a pond or a green house (as mentioned at the end) would you be able access your backyard with equipment for such projects? From videos and the aerial view it appears the trees and curves might make it too tight to access but that could be deceiving.

Great Video! My backyard is on the edge of a well populated forest and I do not have a fence. At the recommendation of Erin, the Impatient Gardener, I use Deer Stopper ll. No deer browsing and no unpleasant scent.....to humans anyway! Awesome stuff!

We have deer here in southern Connecticut, and last year they ate the tops of my beautiful bright yellow Asiatic Lillies, and munched on some Sedum Autumn Joy in the front yard. I spray with a deer and rabbit repellent I bought at Lowe's. This year, no deer have eaten anything.

I have an azalea with dark chocolate colored shiny leaves, so after the dark pink blooms fade it still provides interest. I will also be very interested in how you protect your big leaf hydrangea. My solution was very ugly!

On the squirrel issue-they sharpen their teeth on things like drip tubing and solar light cords. We lost our solar lights on the pergola over winter when the squirrels chewed through it. Ugh!
Your two fave hydrangeas are mine too! Invincibelle Spirit II has center stage near my front porch and it's huge in its fourth year. Fire Light Tidbit is a hidden surprise for those who walk into my separate raised bed garden at the far corner of my garden. Love them (all all the others too).
Long time no "see." I sold my home and moved into an apartment and even though the grounds are beautiful and I have a patio where I can put all of my plants, wind chimes, etc., it's not a garden so I REALLY LOVE looking at your gardens. Your channel is one of my favorite! I love watching your videos. Regarding the deer issue, I did temporarily put a fishing line in front of my garden bed. At night when the deer come, they can’t see it so when they touch it, it startles them and deters them from exploring further. I know not ideal from an aesthetics point of view but worth thinking about. Also how long do you run drip at dusk and dawn? Thanks a lot

Did you lose any hydrangeas when you planted your hedge. I recently planted 8 Incrediball hydrangeas for a hedge in Georgia and it has been 100 degrees here lately and it looks like 3 are not making it 😞 so i won’t have a hedge after all. Do I try to replace in fall? I’ve been watering but my app scanner for diseases says they are over watered

I think squirrels were sent from hell to gardeners lol 😅. Squirrels have taking all my unripe vegetables off the plants and left everywhere. They dig up all my bulbs, they attack all my bird feeders, they dig up all my freshly planted annuals (petunias, pansies etc) and they dig all the soil out of my pots to bury their nuts. I also put down some round ant traps in some areas where I have anthills and they stole them 🤦🏼♀️. This is why I can't have nice things. Oh and sometimes they love to break off lily and bearded iris buds before they bloom just for kicks....I just started hybridizing my tall bearded irises and a squirrel broke off one of my precious seed pods 😱😡.
@@growformegardening yesterday I watched one run across the top of my fence with a whole cinnamon bun in its mouth, run up a tree and hide it. Years ago I had my window open in the morning and walked my son to school less than 10 mins and one chewed through my screen and grabbed my bagel and was trying to pull it through the screen when I got home. They are pests. They also like to chew their way into people's attics and have their babies.

Squirrels chew the tubing looking for water. Put water bowls tucked into your landscape and it will reduce this problem.

Bobbex works for me so far. I plant lavender and herbs around the garden. I have a large area of wild raspberry bushes which they are welcome to.
I think it's a good idea to give them free reign of something outside of the garden

Your channel is one of my favorite! I love watching your videos. Regarding the deer issue, I did temporarily put a fishing line in front of my garden bed. At night when the deer come, they can’t see it so when they touch it, it startles them and deters them from exploring further. I know not ideal from an aesthetics point of view but worth thinking about. Also how long do you run drip at dusk and dawn? Thanks a lot

We run it only in the morning. Just an hour usually, but it really is garden to garden

Have you seen the Eclipse hydrangea from First Edition? It has red purple foliage and berry colored blooms. It stopped me in my tracks at Lowes, so I had to get it 🥰💕👏 Thought you both would like to check it out, since you love hydrangeas too.

Thank you for this Q&A. Lots of great information. I use liquid fence to deter rabbits and deer. I try to spray in the evening. Scent disperses by morning. I do hate having to spray after it rains…every time. I love the idea of the black chicken wire. Can you share what brand it is?? Thank you. 😊

Hi guys! I have a question about trees. I've always been afraid to plant a tree in the beds close to my foundation for fear it will cause issues. But, I see that you have a few. How do you decide if it's safe to do so? Thanks!
We choose trees that are columnar and make sure they are at least 6-10 feet from the foundation
Did you lose any hydrangeas when you planted your hedge. I recently planted 8 Incrediball hydrangeas for a hedge in Georgia and it has been 100 degrees here lately and it looks like 3 are not making it 😞 so i won’t have a hedge after all. Do I try to replace in fall? I’ve been watering but my app scanner for diseases says they are over watered
Over and under watering often look the same. I’d wait until the fall to replace if you are staying that hot

I think squirrels were sent from hell to gardeners lol 😅. Squirrels have taking all my unripe vegetables off the plants and left everywhere. They dig up all my bulbs, they attack all my bird feeders, they dig up all my freshly planted annuals (petunias, pansies etc) and they dig all the soil out of my pots to bury their nuts. I also put down some round ant traps in some areas where I have anthills and they stole them 🤦🏼♀️. This is why I can't have nice things. Oh and sometimes they love to break off lily and bearded iris buds before they bloom just for kicks....I just started hybridizing my tall bearded irises and a squirrel broke off one of my precious seed pods 😱😡.

@@growformegardening yesterday I watched one run across the top of my fence with a whole cinnamon bun in its mouth, run up a tree and hide it. Years ago I had my window open in the morning and walked my son to school less than 10 mins and one chewed through my screen and grabbed my bagel and was trying to pull it through the screen when I got home. They are pests. They also like to chew their way into people's attics and have their babies.

Is it brand new? Sometimes the first flush stays pink and then as the soil around it changes it becomes bluer.
