I really enjoy the addition of these types of videos on your channel! Short, informative, and fun! Also I was going to start researching how/what to dehydrate for backpacking/hiking trips so this video came at the perfect time. Enjoy your guy's new house, you both deserve it!
I didn’t see all the comments to see if this was mentioned before, but if you weigh it before and after, you’ll know approx. how much water to add when re hydrating
Careena that bread looked so yummy like you said butter makes everything better great video as always the new house looks amazing from yesterday's video congratulations to you and Brandon on the move in you look so happy stay safe
Hi Alexis! I've experimented different methods of dehydrating for shelf life. If you want a meat based meal to last for say one of your longer camping trips, it's a good idea to rinse the fat from and pat dry the cooked meat then continue with the recipe. While the fat adds flavor, it also goes rancid and it doesn't lose that much flavor. Promise. Especially if the food is going to be traveling in a backpack on a warm sun beating down day. I really enjoy your content, Congratulations! Happy house building! Thank you so much for sharing glimpses of your beautiful wedding and bits of your life 🥰
Congrats to you both on your new home. Ty for sharing the tips on dehydrating. My wife's wants to try some meals before we head out camping for the summer. We volunteer to camp host for the USFS.
Many thanks for this video. This is a great thing to know how to do. Plus dehydrated food bought at the outdoors/sports shops is very expensive. Screwing up the bread the first time is of course a learning experience. You seem to be living your dream lifestyle. More power to you! 😀
If you "under yeast" a bread dough, you can let it go for a lot longer and it will slowly rise (and end up tasting more complex and delicious!) - the no knead technique is done that way.
Hi Careena, I already made this dish three years ago and dehydrated it. But you should use twice the amount of herbs and spices when preparing it, perhaps adding a few pickled capers. Because after rehydrating, the spices have lost a lot of their intensity. Warm greetings from the German Eifel.
For a bag of spaghetti. Like u put together. How much hot water would u use to rehydrate it on your trip. Bout the only thing I have ever dehydrated was jerky and fruit roll ups
Great video Careena! love the new vibe. Exciting to have built your own home and enjoy your space that you own. Looking forward to all of the new content!
Just an FYI on the bread. If you have treated water "most public water" it could have high amounts of chlorine in it which will kill the yeast. I learned that while homebrewing beer. I had two batches fail to ferment and later found out my city had double dosed the water because of an issue they where having. So something to think about. Normally if its "too little" yeast it will still work just take longer to rise.
I just finished a back country paddle in Algonquin Provincial Park with 5 buddies. We ate very well but nearly broke our backs carrying food (and maybe a bevvie or two). Prior to the trip, I had tried a couple of packages of different, commercially produced dehydrated meals I picked up at Sail. I wouldn't call them awful but they weren't particularly good tasting, were quite expensive, and not nearly enough for a meal. Hence, we decided take food and prepare meals over the fire (we had a chef in the group.) Have you done a side by side comparison of a commercially produced meal compared to one of yours? If so, how does it compare? (I need to upgrade my dehydrator. I have the round type with 8 trays but it is very slow.) Thanks for your video, cheers.
Research a vacuum sealer if you do not already own one. They are life changing and money saving. Add silicone molds for soups and pasta with sauce and a large freezer. Poached chicken, taco meat, roasted turkey, bacon, shaved steak, steak, roast beef, and cooked boneless pork chops can all be portioned to fit anyone or any size family when sealed and frozen. So many other possibilities. We use ours and have saved so much money over the last decade of using it. Mom loves her soups so she prepares the veggies and vacuum seals enough for a pot of soup and freezes. One time washing and cutting for the next 3-4 pots of soup. Well worth the investment IMO. Edit: Works really well on raw meat as well.
They say if your relationship can last through building a house it will last forever! Short but good video. I was looking at the bread and thought to myself slap some butter on that and it will be awesome, then you did. The only bad thing about the video is no Griz!
Question: Could you do this on a round dehydrator? The ‘hole in the middle’ type? I’ve just got the most basic dehydrator from Walmart. Works great for fruits and veggies but I’ve not tried anything like this before. Getting ready to go on my first backpacking trip and I have several severe food sensitivities so this method will be a lifesaver for me. I need to make sure my food is safe for me to eat, which means I can’t really do a lot of pre-packaged meals. Thanks for sharing.
Yes I used to do it on my old one all the time, doesn't;t matter what kind of dehydrator you have, anything that can be dehydrated will do just fine :) Thanks for watching!
Never seen how to dehydrate a meal before. You’ve explained it perfectly Careena. Looks super easy. You might have said but I didn’t catch how much liquid to use for one rehydrated portion?
I left some tips in the description for that but basically I just add slowly as needed. There's no real science to the way I personally do it :) Thanks for watching!
If you're interested in trying more bread recipes I have a great brown bread recipe (is my great grandfather's recipe), and it makes about 4-5 loaves. The extra loaves freeze really well once they cool off. I will share if you'd like. Love the content especially the house building series!
You can dehydrate just about any meal really, I stay away from dairy and eggs though. And yes I put some more info in the descriptions of the video on how to store it otherwise
I dehydrate lasagna in my oven all the time. Cut it into little even bits, 170° with a wooden spoon cracking the door for about 10-12 hours. Comes back like homemade Chef Boyardee 😂
Shout out to compost. Once your pile comes alive for the first time and you're standing in front of a steaming 160 degree pile on a 10 degree day you'll know the joy. When one big scoop of the rich sifted compost at the bottom of a hole gives you enough cherry tomatoes to feed an army you'll know the joy. Sorry. I love my compost pile and garden. Every time you eat, It eats. It's kind of like a pet you take care of.
@@careenaalexis if your recipe says to let your yeast foam up in warm water/milk. That is important!!!!! Lol. If it doesn’t foam up quite a bit, start again before you waste too much time lol. I’m so not a pro but that’s something I’ve noticed. Activating the yeast is critical and then you can try again
Okay you're married now so... so... so you gotta set me up with your sister now okay? I dehydrate veggies and make jerky but I never thought of dehydrating complete meals like spaghetti, great idea! Thank you for sharing!

Looks absolutely delicious Careena! Can't beat dehydrating your own meals, eh 👍
100% agree by the way... butter does fix everything, haha :)
Your Bread looked yummy , Have never had a Dehydrated meal . I probably would grow to like it . Great Job

That's a really smart idea. I'll have to do this soon. Thanks again for the awesome video..!
Forgot one thing... How much hot water to add then eating it later.. Besides that, great to see that it is so easy to do!!
I put that info in the description :)
@@careenaalexis Yeah, I noticed that much later. Still a good idea for a video showing the use of it .. :D

Love the Bread making, same at our house, rarely turns out the way we want. Butter always makes it better!
Love this new kind of content! Will try for sure, premade portion of dehydrated food are kinda pricy in outdoor store or army surplus!
Thanks for watching! For sure, the cost of the dehydrator saves you money in the long run if you do a lot of lightweight camping trips/meals!
Oh man yum! Probably top 3 camping meals for sure.😃🙌
Have only made jerky for canoe trips in the past but your spaghetti looks great . Thanks for the vid .
How do you rehydrate? How much is the water to meal ratio?
For a bag of spaghetti. Like u put together. How much hot water would u use to rehydrate it on your trip. Bout the only thing I have ever dehydrated was jerky and fruit roll ups
Pasta is a go to for me as well. I also like to do a quick risotto with basmati rice, mushroom, onion, frozen peas and condensed mushroom soup
Wish I knew the portion, and how much do you put in the bag per person, also do you add spices
Hi 3:30 your homemade bread look so good! (french viewer x)
Thanks. ✌🏻👊

Thanks for the tip. We actually have really clean, untreated well water so I think I just messed up my yeast lol
Wowww me gustó esa deshidratador de cabelas 😃😃😃👍👍

I have a question. How long will the dehydrated foods last if you vacuum seal it. Have you tried this??Just wondering!!
When making bread from scratch it works best if you activate the yeast is some of the warm water and the sugar of the recipe
One meal I really like is Beans and Weiners, Beenie Weenie, can this be done on a dehydrator? thanks
Great idea thank you for sharing
Have you dehydrated scrambled eggs, if so, details please.
Good job, more people need to be hands on

I was wondering how you did that. Didn’t know if you dehydrated or freeze dried your food.
How do you think dried spaghetti would compare to freeze dried spaghetti?

How do you know how much water to use to re-hydrate? just curious. another good video!
That bread was perfect, it would make awesome French toast
Do you leave out the garlic on purpose?
Thanks for sharing
I was just rehydrating taco meat and cheese sauce. Dehydrated food is awesome for camping
First like comment and view done 👍 alixa...❤❤❤❤ love from India
If I dehydrate for 6 more hours than the recommended 12 MAX, do i still need to condition? Would you condition?
So what do you do with it on the trail? How do you eat it?
Rehydrate it in a pot then eat it
so do you just eat the dehydrated food like a snack and drink water afterwards? or do you actually rehydrate the food?
It gets rehydrated into it original format :)
Great video and good ideas
Thanks for sharing you just gave me lots of ideas!! LOL

Yeah I would say that one tray's wort would be pretty close to one persons portion re-hydrated
