This has become my favorite music video of all time. This was primarily Todrick's baby. Todrick is a multi-talented singer, rapper, songwriter, actor, producer & director who grew up in Arlington, Texas with Scott, Kirstie & Mitch doing musical theater (he was a few years older than the Trio). He got his professional start on RUclips and became very successful as a result. When Pentatonix's star began to rise on RUclips, he wanted to do a collaboration with his long-time friends. Wizard of Oz is his all-time favorite movie, and he came up with this mini-musical as the project for the collaboration. This was purposely designed to feature Kirstie in more of a starring role because up to this point, she had primarily stayed in the background on most of the Pentatonix songs and videos. Despite her musical theater background, she had been extremely shy and had lacked the self-confidence to be front and center with the group (this was largely due to a physical condition which she had been criticized harshly about from some so-called "professional vocal coaches", as that condition had never actually effected her beautiful singing voice). To say that she knocked this one out of the park would be the biggest understatement since "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore!"
🎉 Yay, someone who knows the movie and appreciate the overall involvement in creating this video! It’s been a sad journey watching so many reactors get so confused with this video. 🤦♀️
I agree. A lot of the younger generations just don't get it. I love when reactors get the little references from the songs. Scott's scarecrow thinking about you, but he doesn't have a brain. Mitch's tinman with the damaged heart, but he doesn't have a heart, and Avi's cowardly lion scaring them and Kirstin's Dorothy scolding him for it. And Todrick's Wizard of Oz living in the Emerald City. There's so much more and it all fits perfectly. It's pure genius!!!
I love the creative genius behind this arrangement. Can you imagine the high school music department. First you have Todrick the a couple years later Mitch, Kirstie and scott show up.
You absolutely killed this reaction! Can you imagine listening to a reactor that had never heard of the Wizard of Oz, book or movie, or Judy Garland? It is so great to share this with you, understanding all the references, and appreciating the creative genius throughout this video... adapting the classic to modern music, plus PTX and their experience with musical theatre. It's a masterpiece. Thanks so much for sharing.
Great reaction, really enjoyed your review. I think most of Pentatonix songs are not quite what we expect going into them, but they usually exceed our expectations.
Love, love, love this creative arrangement. Did you notice Scott's song repeatedly talks about 'thinking' referring to the scarecrow needing a brain? I admit I get a little tired of some members getting glanced over and the same ones being mentioned by reactors over and over. I adore them all and like they say: It takes a village... ❤ 🧡 💛 💙 💜 And Todrick is brilliant in his own right 💚 Check out his Black and White video with some of PTX 🖤🤍
You really owe it to yourself (and your fans) to also play "Black and White" by Todrick Hall, featuring the trio from Pentatonix, who he grew up singing and dancing with in Musical theater groups. It's genius, and amazing, and, of course, it's also Pentatonix! Pretty please!
Todrick Hall does a lot of great stuff like this... He's done a bunch of Disney movies using songs from various artists... For example Britney and the Beast being Beauty and the Beast told using Britney Spears songs lol. He also does a bunch of fun mashups, medleys and parodies, not to mention his own original stuff. There's a good variety of stuff, so there is probably at least a few things you'd like... Some is musical theatre, some rap, some ballads, some dance tracks... He's pretty into the gay and drag scene, even if he's not technically a drag queen as such, but it's not all like that if you don't like that stuff... But if you do, then you may love it lol. Some of the outfits are amazing and he often puts together great productions for his videos.
Loved your reaction and that you actually understood what was happening! So many reactors didn’t have a clue, which is really sad. You needed to let the video go a little longer because Todrick actually spoke at the end. 💕
There's a "making of" video for this that's as entertaining as the actual video. They talk about the process, and the way they shot the scenes to accommodate Kirstin's changes.
Scott, Mitch, and Kirsty when to musical theater together in Alrington, TX with Todrick when they where young and Todrick put this together and wanted Pentatonix to perform it with him.
Great reaction, this is one of my favourites! I'm not sure if you've reacted to Superfruit (Scott & Mitch side group) but I'd highly recommend Defying Gravity that they did. Mitch really hits the notes!
They needed an excuse to have Kevin on-screen and they were running out of major characters, hence, Toto. Please note, however, that "Toto" sure seems to be doing a lot of singing for a dog.
