The result was that by the time she reached age 40 (1982), her voice was already negatively affected, and her vocal register was much lower. She's only 56 at the time of this performance, but her voice is a weak shadow of what it had been. I say this as a life-long Aretha fan.
Yes, however she stopped smoking cigarrettes early in the 1990's and she regained strength in her voice again. She did this "Say A Little Prayer" performance early morning which the vocal chords wasn't fully ready that morning. I think Aretha's voice in the 90's was a huge improvement from the 80's since she quit the smoking. In the mid 80's it seemed like she was struggling to get through her performances. Anyone agree? (However she was still AWESOME in the 80's but her wasn't as strong as it was in the 60's,70's, 90's and 00's.)

Personally I like when singers get older, their voices become more rustic and worn - but also more experienced. Like Frank Sinatra was a crooner when he was younger and I loved his voice then, but as I listen to his music from when he got a little older, I realize how much BETTER he sounds. Aretha followed the same pattern - her voice got better with age!
