  • We are looking at the style of sword and shield that were used in the early 15th century. The heater shield and sword evolved from the knightly sword and kite shield.
    We are going to look at the way the shield was used and how it can work in conjunction with with the arming sword.

    8:48 - there is documentation of a technique widely used (one of the documentaries on PBS Secrets of the Dead) in which an attacking army (the Danes I think) was incredibly successful with the simple pole axe since, from the evidence in the bones, the attacker would chop at the feet, and then when their victim collapsed, the attacker would spin the pole axe around and impale the victim's skull through their helmet with the pointy back end of the pole axe. So, yeah, feet can be a legit target, given the right weapon. But, wonderful explanation of this shield and techniques. I learned a lot.

      that was a mercenary force which attacked a local militia who got locked out at the city gates. the locals had dated equipment and the slashes to the legs were by sword. a high feint followed by leg slash. a pole axe cannot change direction at speed and really has no need to as it would deliver a devastating blow to the shield arm. but basically yes any point on the body is a target.

    Wow! I hate that I hadn't found your video before now. I have been training with the longsword for about 5yrs, but my second interest is exactly what this video covered. It is hard to find good training videos using arming sword and heater shield. I have both and would love to become more proficient with them.

    Would you be kind and make more videos with shields? I am interested to comprehend techniques combination of kite shield and spear. Idea is to have crossbow to hit enemy from distance and in a same time to have long shield and long spear to fight back infantry, horseman or arrow barrage. If we are in medieval age, I am looking a way to fast train peasents and commoners into deadly formation and in a same time to equip them with reinforced wooden equipment which is cheap in comparision with full iron knightly gear.

      I can do some shield work, but I do not have any kite shields. I have done shield and spear work and I'm happy to share that.
      Unfortunately we are not able to make any videos right at the moment. We are currently moving locations and will have a new filming location to do videos in soon

    Do any manuscripts survive that illustrate and/or discuss fighting with this type of shield? What you outlined makes perfect sense; I was just wondering if there were any contemporary written sources.

    • @swordfightingschool
      @swordfightingschool  3 года назад +2

      I don't know of manuscripts that talk about using this kind of shield. The shields that we do see in manuscripts are more from the 18th century in the Scottish style.

      @@swordfightingschool You think you could find time to share some press, hook and feint techniques with arming sword and heater shield in use? =)
      Got myself a new heater shield, the people I train with are all about bucklers though and I must admit that is not really my thing.

    Here’s a question arming sword and heater shields are an amazing team. Sometimes I learned the shield can be used to push, slap, and bash also parry may we see how these are preformed

      Sure, I'd be happy to do some of that. I apologize for not having more current videos out, but after moving into our new location I didn't get back to making them. I'll rectify that and this will be one of the first videos that we do.

    What if your shield has different strabs then yours? Mine has a bottom and top cross for strabs. Sow either have to get true the bottom up or true the top down and grab the other cross to twist the strabs and get a thighter grip. The way you are doing the guerds I would sticking the point of the shield up and or out instead of having the flat up cause in armor of any type that's the best way to get a propper grip on the thing. Or what I mostly do is suitcase it and let it hang down that way if standing sideway's it covers most of my body and if someone tilts it then the shield will be between the point and me giving the option to strike back.

    • @swordfightingschool
      @swordfightingschool  7 месяцев назад

      Can you send me a picture of the straps on your shield? I can't say what is 'right' but I'm happy to offer what advice I can

    • @joeyvanhaperen7715
      @joeyvanhaperen7715 7 месяцев назад

      @@swordfightingschool wel it's the exact same shape, but instead you have 2 strabes that cross near the flat and 2 near the point. You kind up end up holding straight down point aimed out. It's also a historical strab configuration sow that's why I'm asking.

    I am interested in 2-handed sword strategies against a sword and shield opponent. There is not a lot of information regarding fighting tactics and strategies. What are your thoughts on how a 2-handed sword should work to overcome an opponent with a sword and sheild?

    I'm new into Buhurt and I'm wondering why it seems the Heater Shield isn't as commonplace. Granted I can see that it's larger than a Punch Shield but I'm wondering if with my background as a boxer if it would be more of a practical tool.

    • @swordfightingschool
      @swordfightingschool  5 месяцев назад

      I think that the heater shield is not as popular because people tend to think of the shield as a defensive tool and not offensive. They seem to think of the punch shield as an offensive tool.
      I can't guarantee this, but it is my theory.

    What about attacking with the shield and sword at the same time?

    • @swordfightingschool
      @swordfightingschool  10 месяцев назад +1

      The problem with attacking with the sword and the shield at the same time is that it extends both of your arms and throws your balance off. If you extend both arms with weapons on them You are too easily push-up balance.

    • @swordfightingschool
      @swordfightingschool  10 месяцев назад +1

      @@SamuraiShawn-oe9nm one of the biggest differences is that the strapped shield is easier on the arm because it is connected to the arm in two places, where the center grip is all about the hand strength arm strength.

    What the fuck, kite shields are NOT too long for use on foot, you literally made that up on the spot. It's also bullshit that you shouldn't chicken wing a rifle.
