His character is indeed an anomaly, not just among the vast number or isekai protags, but in the rezero world itself. In the short time that he's been transported to that world, he's managed to be at the center of subjugation efforts against monsters like the White Whale, Great Rabbit, and Sin Archbishops. All of these monsters have roamed and terrorized their world for over 400 years until Subaru.
And it seems to be all because Satella fell in love with him for some unknown reason and gave him return by death so that he will never die for real. Though I still have no idea what exactly caused him to be summoned to this world.

So much so that this is literally what he did in pride if, which (although it never happend) tells what would have happen if subaru decided to click the fuck it button. And in greed if he made reinhard his doggy. This certainly isn't a weak character. Sure, he doesn't have any special ability other than RBD, but RBD alone makes all the other op abilities subaru, reinhard or any other character could ever wish for, useless.

In your own criticism, even if Subaru could chose when to have save points, his responsibility is still absolved, as it was still forced upon from the start. But even though it was force upon, Subaru still has major responsibility anyways because he, himself, makes it his responsibility like how everyone else in the world does.

After he realizes this was not the case, he kept going because it was the only thing he was really focusing on. His hero complex made him feel that he should save everyone, and over time he starts to authentically care about the people he's getting to know. And when it comes to Puck ending the world, Subaru thought he could just run away, which is the basis of the sloth if story. That meant subaru really didnt believe puck would actually succeed in destroying everything. The story mainly focuses on subaru's internal struggles, which is why the story is like this. The story disguises itself as a plot driven narrative when intially there were no stakes to begin with, it was only stakes when subaru gave himself those stakes.

I love re zero but I both hate and like Subaru. He is dumb as a rock. But he is good at strategy because of video games. Some say he is smart but they confuse it with strategy. Because a smart person would never make the stupid mistakes he makes. This is also why people love the story. Because the writer blue balls you and makes you see all the dumb choices that most smart people wouldn't make and literally pisses the viewer off. Then once you are upset with the dumb choice he has made. Then the writer gives you the pay off. And you are finally getting the relief for him making the right decision. Being able to produce winning strategies is intelligence. He’s smart. What in the world do you define as “smart”? Being smart doesn’t mean you know everything, humans don’t know everything. Being smart can mean lots of things, but one thing is being capable at at least one thing, which Subaru has shown. Video games don’t always require the skills Subaru needs to survive. And even so, to pretend like video game skills means you can survive similar not gamified situations is silly, and a sign you need to touch grass. He is smart though 1. Read the actual Crusch camp negotiations, he had to figure out that Crusch was recruiting an army to fight the white whale, figure out that Roswaal had given Rem the rights to negotiations and the only way Crusch would listen to him would be if he managed to convince Rem to give him that, had to then negotiate with Anastasia and the royal banker of Lugunica at once, then after doing all of that he still had to make up a story that is technically correct to fool Crusch's blessing of the wind and he did all of that in a single loop. I am also missing in a lot of stuff that make this feat even greater but i recommend you read it yourself 2. He is outright stated to be a child prodigy multiple times and the only reason for his downfall was his loss of concentration to the right path. In arc 7, we finally get a glimpse at what a child Subaru was like and its clear why he was called that. From manipulating an entire army to causing an uprising large enough to upturn Vollachia to basically becoming the progenitor of destruction. 3. He also managed to destroy Echidna and Roswaal's 400 yr long plan, those 2 are smart enough to predict and control all events of 4 centuries. 4. Managed to convince beatrice to leave the mansion. This is a major feat due to how difficult it would be to change someone's mind after 400 yrs of trauma

1. Read the actual Crusch camp negotiations, he had to figure out that Crusch was recruiting an army to fight the white whale, figure out that Roswaal had given Rem the rights to negotiations and the only way Crusch would listen to him would be if he managed to convince Rem to give him that, had to then negotiate with Anastasia and the royal banker of Lugunica at once, then after doing all of that he still had to make up a story that is technically correct to fool Crusch's blessing of the wind and he did all of that in a single loop. I am also missing in a lot of stuff that make this feat even greater but i recommend you read it yourself
2. He is outright stated to be a child prodigy multiple times and the only reason for his downfall was his loss of concentration to the right path. In arc 7, we finally get a glimpse at what a child Subaru was like and its clear why he was called that. From manipulating an entire army to causing an uprising large enough to upturn Vollachia to basically becoming the progenitor of destruction.
3. He also managed to destroy Echidna and Roswaal's 400 yr long plan, those 2 are smart enough to predict and control all events of 4 centuries.
4. Managed to convince beatrice to leave the mansion. This is a major feat due to how difficult it would be to change someone's mind after 400 yrs of trauma
