Regardless of whether the prisoner "deserved" to die, I think this short film depicts a perspective not often explored in capital punishment. I think that the warden feels that something isn't right about what they do. Frankly, I would find it troubling if those who participate in an execution are able to sleep at night following an execution for quite some time. Even if you support the death penalty, don't you agree that something just isn't right when another human being is killed, regardless of the reasoning? It just seems so incredibly wrong. I am simply unable to perform the mental gymnastics to justify killing someone, even if they might not "deserve" to live. Some may argue that it is "justice" for the victim's family, and yet when a high profile prisoner is executed, sometimes people will cheer outside the prison walls. That doesn't sound like the result of justice; it sounds like vengeance. Almost as if the death penalty is simply a legal avenue to bloodthirsty vengeance. That just seems so incredibly morally repulsive and wrong. Just the thought of that make me feel a little sick to my stomach... absolutely repulsive.
@@zippymufo9765 It seems that you severely misinterpreted my comment. I want to make it clear that my opposition to capital punishment is NOT in defense of murderers. Frankly, some of the worst criminals probably deserve a fate far worse than death. But no civilized society would deliver such a punishment. It is our job, as 𝘤𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘥 citizens, to reject the barbarism that murders live by. There is nothing righteous or correct about vengeance. Just as the crimes committed by those often sentenced to death are sickening, so is the barbaric response that is capital punishment. Let’s instead lock these criminals up for the remainder of their lives so that they can’t hurt anyone again, while still setting a good example to society on the civilized way of doing things.
@@maxinator2002 I understand your point completely and for the most part agree with you. However understand this, my husband was a maximum security corrections officer. Many of the inmates there were what you would call "lifers." Some "lifers" were given multiple life sentences for very heinous violent crimes and sentenced to death. After New York abolished Capital punishment these inmates had nothing left to lose. There was no consequence anymore and in fact contributed to the murder of other inmates and corrections officers as well. It made an already dangerous job even more so in my opinion. So this is a very slippery slope when it comes to the death penalty. What do you do with these type of offenders? Some people are too dangerous to live within society or even within a prison setting. The line between vengeance and justice can be blurred at times especially when you lose a loved one to a vicious crime. I know because I felt the very same way when my husband was murdered by a drunk and drugged out driver. I was angry and bitter for a long time during my year long hospital stay. The one thing I can tell you is that no one wants to become an executioner. It takes a very strong minded and disciplined person to do so, and still it has a profound effect on those involved. There are too many unknowns here for this film to be meaningful. What did the prisoner whisper in the ear of the Warden? How did the prisoner reappear? Is there a relationship with that reappearance and the Warden putting on that ring? Having a film that leaves you thinking is fine, but there should be some meaningful clues for speculation. But this is just a bunch of question marks.

Should I ask for this death sentence to be converted to life in prison without any chance of release but is it life even for a criminal ??? Who am I to give my opinion ??? This is not realistic. This is an extremely G rated version of what really happens. Why do we still practice this sick barbaric form of punishment? We are a sick society!
yes, this is a G rated version of what often really happens. but in theory, this is exactly what should happen. the prisoner is strapped to the table, unconscious within seconds, and dead soon after. if the people performing executions were properly trained, this would be entirely realistic.

The reappearance of the executed man in his backseat (also like the whisper) symbolizing that the memory of the man he helped put to death will always haunt his memory... the warden will forever carry the man with him.

The death penalty should only be aloud for serial killers and mass murders. Terrorsists too but one murder should just be prison time. Feel free to reply I want to hear some opinions.
I agree. And child molesters
My opinion is anyone in jail for rape should die by electric chair
I disagree. The death penalty should be abolished altogether. Hatred only begets hatred
Only for capital offenses or aggravated murder. That I would agree, but child molestation, usually depends.
@@noplease1323 all child rapist and child molesters deserve slow suffocation by ducktape. Who agrees with me?
Wow...... just wow
I will be traumatized for life I mean my whole life until I die if I would be a judge I would not give death penalty and a full life sentence. It’s not a punishment it’s murder. ☠️.....
Very sad,😢
So proud of Virginia for ending the death penalty
New GOP Governor and GOP State House are on track to bringing capital punishment back to Virginia, they just need to flip State Senate in 2023 to do it, which will be pretty easy bc currently is 21-19 for Dems, they just need to flip 1 seat and Lt.Gov. can cast the tiebreak vote in favor of reinstate the death penalty
Maybe some day Texas will end death penalty ok it was just a joke
@@charlesciminera5881 oh they will and it won't be too much longer
@@johnwest7463 keep dreaming, never going to happen, a supermajority of Texas voters supporting the death penalty will never allow monsters to escape what they deserve, in the South victims matters, victim’s families matters

@David Marskell well spoken sir I agree with what you said....God bless
Agreed
In my humble opinion, the film is art. And just like art the unknowns should be answered or interpreted by the viewer. For me, the whispering in the ear of the last words, the putting on of the ring, and the reappearance of the condemned man are all symbolic. Even if we - as the audience, were to hear the last words (what was whispered to the warden) we will eventually forget those words and carry on with our lives. However, the warden will forever have those words etched in his memory. Putting the ring on, is symbolic of the warden faced with the responsibility of returning to his normal life (maybe he's married)... and being expected to not let the burden of the trauma he just actively witness not effect his personal life. The reappearance of the executed man in his backseat (also like the whisper) symbolizing that the memory of the man he helped put to death will always haunt his memory... the warden will forever carry the man with him.

Who’s gonna ignore the fact that they get a good meal

Can't do such a job, just observing someone dying???? No ways. You remain guilty for the rest of your life. Don't judge so you too will not be judged?????
I've always had an opinion for everything but there, I don't know what to think !!! Should I avenge the victims and punish the murderer ?? Should I ask for this death sentence to be converted to life in prison without any chance of release but is it life even for a criminal ??? Who am I to give my opinion ??? All I know is the drama that these victims and families are going through on both sides !!!
So sad for taking a man life ,I once was facing a death sentence but God and sentence to death God keep spiritual strong
What was the death sentence for?
I think it's worry to have death penalty no one should be killed by no body in jail or out of jail only one person can judge us all and that is god
@thirstpolice if the death penalty worked there would be no more murders. So your argument falls apart
It will cause murders, thefts and so much more with no cops
That is true. No human should have the right to take any ones life!😡

One thing I know only god that judge us but these people who judge people death I just hope in their time with god 🙏 hope they can answer the question he will ask them
What a life
they should just contract it out to the prisoners so it's more random. All that red tape and false hope is torture
Idk why people want to get ride of the death row. I think we need it more then anything right now. Maybe it will scare people to not go that way so they don't end up in the bed
There is absolutely no proof that the death penalty acts as a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in capital punishment states.
About the only 'plus' for capital punishment is no one re-offends !

Barbaric country!! Killing people in order to prove that killing is wrong. That's crazy!!
@@auggith I don’t agree it should happen at all. Let them sit in prison. They suffer more and cost less.
Morgan Freeman is an excellent actor.

Don't do the crime if you can't face the consequences.
Outstanding
Some people get first chance but, their no second chances once the judges say put death row .
Nicely done!
Wow. Awesome film. Thanks.
People still commit first degree crimes, even with the death penalty in place.Obviously not effective as a deterrent or the administration of justice.
I agree with that 100%. the death penalty has been a practice long since biblical times... how long ago was that???? and we still need to worry about people committing these offences???????
