Why French farmers are protesting in Paris: 'Jeremy Clarkson's right'

- A tractor blockade established at eight points around Paris is intended to “starve Parisians”, a French farmer has claimed.
Benoit Durand, a grain farmer, told French broadcaster BFM TV: “We are holding a siege in Chartres, one hour away from Paris. It’s part of the blockade... the goal is to put pressure on the government.”
”[Blockading Paris] will happen naturally. Parisians are going to be hungry. The goal is to starve Parisians. That’s it”.
Around 800 tractors have surrounded the capital as farmers protest what they say are stringent environmental regulations, red tape and low pay.
Near Beauvais, north of Paris, dozens of tractors lined the highway in one of many such protests across the country, displaying banners that read: “Our end will be your hunger” - a play on the similar-sounding French words fin (end) and faim (hunger).
Armoured police vehicles were deployed to Rungis on Monday after some farmers threatened to “occupy” it. Over 8,000 tons of goods pass through its market every day to feed nearly 12 million people.
In the event of major disruption, Paris would only have three days’ food supplies, as deliveries are made every day, according to government agency Ademe.

I didn't have Jeremy Clarkson becoming a folk hero in France on my Bingo card.
What a world we live in.
Actually...that's the very first time I hear Jeremy Clarkson mentionned in this context (or mentionned at all to be honest).
The Clarkson's farm is not even a popular tv show (it's on a paying channel, and most farmers simply don't have the time to watch this kind of things, at least the ones I know).
My guess is that the reporter chose this specific declaration because it's a reference most british people would get (as opposed to many french analysts/columnists who are well known in France, but wouldn't ring a bell to anyone outside the country).
Well, he was already pretty known in France because we had top gear uk aired here too. So it’s not so surprising that farmers heard about his farming show.
Reality always exceeds fiction
Clarkson farm is one of their most popular shows. Amazon is everywhere.
Except he is not a folk hero in France. Nothing in the video states that.
Jeremy Clarkson: Hero of France.
Who could ever imagine that? Really shows how funny and also serious he can be about things.
Strangely, most of people absolutely love Jeremy Clarkson in here. The rest are just too old or too young and don't know him.
Hero of agriculture, not just France. Crazy times lol
We don't know him...
@@TheGrenadier97 well its not fact or anything lol

Jeremy Clarkson; his genius, was in fact, frightening.
His genius is so frightening that it generates gravity
It's so frightening I can hear his genius
Some say, it even generates it's own gravity.
For the French government that is...
Brexit has absolutely destroyed UK farmers. Let's hope the same doesn't happen to the French
I don't think any of us can quite grasp how important Clarkson's Farm has been about depicting the struggles the farming folk face, not only in the UK, but around the globe.
I didn't need JC to point that out to me. Tory paper beefing up the image of a Tory
I'm not plugged into the world of farming. His series has been very informative for us laymen out here. Hope they don't actually cancel him. I could see the system trying to make an example out of him like Alex Jones. These globalist clowns love to shoot the messenger.
Farming folk? Farmers own land worth millions - they aren’t ’poor’ people. And they benefit massively from state subsidies. I thought Telegraph readers were in favour of fewer state subsidies and smaller state apparatus in general?
@@bodhid You'd be surprised. They have land worth millions, but it takes millions to farm it. Often times the farmer is left with relatively little. I've seen farmers in Alberta with 2 or 3 million dollars worth of equipment to farm the fields and their family is living in a run down old mobile home.
it isn't. It is farming cosplay
I never thought I'd see the day when a sizable bunch of Frenchies agree with Jeremy Clarkson, but here we are.
Because Britties are not the rivals, only the ones still thinking it are
As a French, I agreed on most things Clarkson said or did. Well except when he dramatize our culture far beyond what it really is 😅
@@VraelFreorhe Many of us brits 'dramatize' French culture for giggles. I tease all my french friends in the UK. Every time I visit France I joke to them that I'm on enemy soil. It's all in good taste, at least for many of us.

I never understand how a population that riots so often still constantly elects people that make ridiculous decisions
Because elections are rigged democracy doesnt exist
Broken promises and lots of lies.
It goes to show how corrupt the politician caste can be, when in reality they should always fear for their life every waking day being the reason people have to pull stunts like these.
Because no matter what all of the parties are dumb with the left being the equivalent to your right in term of rights for women and etc ... and the right is anti immigration so no matter what it will always be someone closer to the center.
Stop blaming the politicians and start blaming the people who elect them.
Never piss off the people that make your food.
@@user-fc4vh8fx1u No, this person has taken a true fact and made himself an imbecile, farmers do not make food, they harvest crops and sell livestock, Ukraine is mostly grains, that would then be processed and used to make ingredients for foodstuffs. It's funny because they say never piss off people that make your food, in relation to farmers, but would be the type to insult the drive thru worker as he gets his big mcCheese
Factory workers and abbatoirs make your food.

@@SmD-ff5xd U know the raw materials need to come from somewhere right? It doesn't just spawn in factories
Ukraine is the gateway to Russia. The fact that it produces the majority of Europe's (corn, iirc) and manure may be somewhat coincidental, though I imagine that also plays a roll.
I truly believe Russia is protecting its border from a threat outside Ukraine and Putin may have felt he had no choice.
We may never know the truth of it all, propaganda wins wars. Soldiers just die or live to wonder why
they can be replaced, like any of us
I'm British, British farmers should've done this years ago. But unfortunately the British love to whine constantly about things, but never have the balls to do something about it. Just to add, I would fully support British farmers if they were to do the same. It's a life most were born into so deserve fair income for supplying us with food.
True
Keep calm and carry on will be the failure of this country.
Tragically true.
Well we French people never miss an opportunity to protest or show our minds to the government. That is sometimes a good thing but not always 😉

The thing I love about Clarksons farm is that he shed light on the struggles that those who put food on our table face. I wish them all the best. Know matter what country your form.
*No matter
@@LostInPhilly89You really corrected that but not the rest of the sentence "your form"
Yeah, its just so true, at jsut 143£ profit or something like that, and all of the restrictions it realy sheds light on their reality, I mean he doesnt need the money, does he but yeah
That's the struggle of small family owned farms, the big owners tho, they try to get as much community founds as they can, always threading the line between legal and illegal
yeah that's fantastic, it's an important topic and their struggles are everyone's
Good luck from the US. I live in Ohio, which still has a lot of small farms, so we know here how essential the farmers are to society. Literally can't live without em.
Same.
It's mainly the union protecting the big farms that launch the protest in France!
Are they essential tough? Sure a system of small farmers with higher food prices might be good for the economy and their lives. But an abusive system where a few big landowners produce food on the backs of impoverished farm hands more cheaply and at higher quality also is possible. Not to mention just importing more food
They are in no way essential, but they might be a better choice than the alternative
We can, EU has too many farmers. We overproduce everything, we simply don't need so many of them it's that simple. Farmers are uneducated, they think we need to buy everything they produce, no we don't. Each EU country is self sufficient and overproduces food, that's why we give away a lot of it to Africa, if we got rid of 40% of farmers in EU we would not even notice difference.
@@yucol5661 ain't no way
It's so strange for me as a russian to see a protest without 10 cops punching 1 guy in the stomach... Damn, it's just cool that people in France can speak.
oh, that's usually how protests happen in france - the government in fact kept pushing laws to make it harder to legally attack riot cops for abuse of power and physical aggression by removing any identifying markers from them, and in protests in the last few years under Macron, there's been many cases of people being maimed by 40mm rubber rounds from grenade launchers, amongst other things
it's just that unlike previous protests, which were mainly pedestrians, farmers have tractors and other machines, so the police is a little more hesitant on its usual brutality for now
French cops can be plenty brutal. These farmers are getting extremely lenient treatment compared to most protesters.
If I was a cop I certainly wouldn’t punch the person who helps my livelihood

What a very strange year we live in...
It’s not the first time over here that the farmers take their tractors to the streets.
Only problem is that when they get most or all they want, a small minority (a lot leaving because they are content). wants to keep pushing for more stuff out of selfishness and almost always turn a lot of the public against them.
The old french adage “give them a hand and they take your arm”. It’s always like that with protests in France. It’s as if a minority gets a taste for protesting and wants to keep doing it just for the sake of protesting
@@GravitasZero Your describing entirely how special interest groups are formed and why they are dangerous.

@@punkinhoot There is no exponential population growth. If it weren't for immigration, France would probably already be in decline. The issue here is misguided policies that try to fix one problem and create a dozen new ones.
It's more than the farmers refuse to listen to suggestions, and just take the money that is meant to help them transfer to a more sustainable way of farming, and pocket it.
@@FreedomPuppyexcactly. There aren't innocent and they aren't in a morally superior position here. There is room for improvement and for reforms, that is true, but they also have to do their part. Peasants aren't poor in those countries. They are quite wealthy. It's the same story in Germany.
@@FreedomPuppy Farmers have listened to and applied reasonable suggestions as is within their increasingly tiny budgets that are barely kept afloat by farm loans, instead of listening to """green""" environmentalists who are either utterly ignorant (and arrogant), or maliciously trying to drive generational farming into the ground so state/CCP tied monopolies can continue to spread and thus continue to screw over food prices and regulations like we've seen with other large near-conglomerate companies and their uses of pollution credits and unfair/unnecessary regulations to drive out legitimate competition.
@@FreedomPuppy there's the issue that more sustainable ways of farming does reduce crop yield - at least for a time, and generally requires more effort to harvest, so more people, so more money to pay them, and it just doesn't compete with imported food from outside of europe that doesn't even need to meet the quality certifications imposed on european farmers, thus being far, far cheaper
in france at least, most of the money given to farmers actually just goes to big corporate holdings that own a large portion of farmlands, and little else goes to smaller farmers, and corporate types are mostly about maximising profits rather than being eco-friendly and sustainable, so that doesn't help the case
so basically the issue is in large part regarding giant farming conglomerates satisfying investors and lobbying politicians
