  • In this video I prepare herbs for a few post birth baths, some tea for after birth, labor tea, shepherd's purse tincture and a "shot" of raspberry leaf labor tea. We also do some baby watching, see the little girls show off their "pregnant" bellies, and read a new birth book.
    After Birth Baths (Enough for 3 Baths)
    1/2 c. each Comfrey Leaf
    Raspberry Leaf
    Plantain
    Yarrow
    Uva Ursi
    Lavender
    Shepherd's Purse
    3 c. Sea Salt
    Divide herbs and salt between 3 jars. Bring 2 quarts of water to a boil. Turn off heat. Steep contents of one jar, covered, in hot water for 20 minutes. Strain the tea into the bath.
    Postpartum Tea
    1 Tbs. each Sweet Cinnamon
    Shepherd's Purse
    Cramp Bark
    Raspberry Leaf
    Steep for 15 minutes. (Makes 3 cups.)

    Andrea, I really enjoy watching you do this kind of self care. Even if people don't follow the same path regarding alternatives to supporting health, they can follow your example to plan ahead and do positive things for their wellbeing.

    Hey Andrea, Katherine Murphy here. I wanted to pop in and say I had my baby on the 28\03\18 and I was booked in for a csection April 19th but they got worried about my c section scar. All went well and she was born at 34 weeks and 6 days at 5lb 6oz. Anyhow after much going back and forth I have diligently waking up every three hours and going to special care nursery and fed my baby and pumped. We have avoided all invasive care. No nasal gastric tube, no formula too! This is my first experience with a prem baby or even pumping. I am so grateful for Gods loving caring care. They told me baby would have to be in hospital until after her due date (May 3rd) but we are going home tomorrow! We now have 3 boys and 6 girls. I realised how hard it is to name a baby after naming 8 others in 11 years. After a few days we have little Leah. It made me even more excited for your little girl who is coming soon. Although my journey of having babies hasn’t been “the best” (9 c sections) I am so grateful to God for His loving care and my safety over these last 12 years.

      Andrea Mills thank you! When they told me “she will probably lose weight” and she gained 62 grams I said “I told you I could do it! That was ME! I did that.” I showed up every 3 hours to feed and can’t wait to go home and enjoy the bliss of a new precious baby. Thank you for your well wishes xx

    I love this! If we're ever blessed with another baby, I'm making all of these. I always drink Red Raspberry Leaf tea in the second and third trimester for strengthening and toning the uterus, but I've never done the extra strong batch during labor. That's what I need...I tend to be a bleeder. My midwife always has Shepherds Purse and other birth tinctures, but the concentrated Red Raspberry is exciting!!! Any day now.....praying for you!

      This will be our 3rd homebirth(Lord willing) but this time we will be without any family support. Usually we have one set of grandparents that will come and stay for a couple of weeks to help out with the little ones while I recover and rest up. This time it will just be us and my three oldest boys are excited to jump in and help out afterwards. Your video on post pardom touched on that a smidge and gave me the confidence that "we can handle this" even if it's just premade meals for mama and PB&J style meals for the littles. Anyway, you are a blessing, thanks so much~Texas Mom

    Awwww! That is one thing I do miss about pregnancy, watching baby move and groove. I get so very sick during pregnancy that it is one of the few things I enjoy. My last baby (#5), I was on 5 medications in the beginning (for vomiting and nausea) and 4 at birth. I ended up needing a c-section (unrelated issue) and was throwing up DURING the c-section. But...I still want another. 'Cause I'm crazy, I guess, lol.

    I just love how organized you are and that label maker is my dream!! Great birth prepping!
    When I was in the hospital with one of my 8 births they made me an after-birth ice pack out of a disposable diaper that had been slit at the top and filled with ice....amazingly soothing. You could easily prep some of these with herbs in them and then when the time comes to use them, just fill with ice. Or you could even have them in the freezer now -the herbs and ice will keep great. Your body heat will activate the herbal properties and reduce swelling.

    Wow! I used herbs in my pregnancy but nowhere near as organized as you. I absolutely LOVE the raspberry tea. I drank a quart a day in distilled water during most of my pregnancies. I still drink it everyday since my last baby. It has such great health benefits especially for female health. I hope the birth prep is helping to get things ready. You won’t be disappointed along with all the other great herbs your taking! I’m very excited for you. God bless you and keep you as the apple of his eye!

    • @lynseykmom2870
      @lynseykmom2870 6 лет назад

      Andrea Mills Yes they will give you contractions but you know they are doing their job. They can pack a bit of punch but it’s worth it. Especially the healing afterwards. I can’t tell you the difference between taking herbs with my pregnancies and not taking them for other pregnancies. I really like the raspberry leaf “shot” you made. What a smart idea.

    I know that this has nothing to do with the topic of the video but I have been binge watching your videos and was just curious after seeing in your wedding video that Tom had a daughter from a previous marriage. I never hear you mention her. Do you, Tom, or the children have a relationship with her? Love watching your family grow and and I am praying that you have a safe delivery. God bless you and your family!

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, we do. She's been on several videos, though she's not very comfortable being on camera or having a fuss made over her. We don't really say who she is when she's with us, for that reason. Until last spring, she lived about 1,300 miles away, but now Tom's aunt and uncle (her adoptive parents) moved, along with Mileena, into Grandpa Frank's house to care for him. I think the most recent video she was on was one of the Christmas videos when we had a birthday lunch for Aunt Suzie at Grandpa Frank's house. In one scene, Sophia is sitting on Mileena's lap playing with the cat.

      I've got a lot of different books that are great. My favorites are the ones by Rachel Weaver. I took a correspondence course from the School of Natural Healing to get started. www.learningherbs.com is another great place to learn. Mostly it's just a matter of slowly collecting information as I needed it. www.amazon.com/Your-Doctor-Rachel-Weaver-M-H/dp/0971266905/ and www.amazon.com/Herbal-Home-Health-Care-Christopher/dp/1879436035/ are a couple of good books to start with.

    Thanks for sharing all this! I'm 32 weeks and very anemic, almost low enough to be risked out of home birth with my midwife or to need to get IV iron. I'm taking herbs and chlorophyll to get my levels up, but I have bled pretty heavily after my other births (this is #5, first was a C-section and the rest have been VBACs), so I'm going to make the raspberry leaf shot to hopefully take when I go into labor (though my 3 VBACs have been fast, 3.5 hours, 2.5 hours, and 2 hours, so we'll see if I have time!). Also going to make the bath herbs.

      I always say I'm blessed to have had that first c-section. I learned so much about myself, and all women, in the journey of recovery - both physically and emotionally and if I didn't have that birth I wouldn't have had my subsequent birth experiences! I feel like only VBAC mums understand what I mean.

    So helpful ...maybe I missed it but did you share which herbs you use for afterpains ... after my 4th they were so bad right after delivering my placenta that they brought an ultrasound machine in to see what was causing me so much pain All was well internally but still I was shaking and my entire body felt broken and when I would get an afterpains it intensified .. 😰 I would like to prevent this or prep my body better .. Dies the toning of the uterus make afterpains more bearable in your experience

      The raspberry leaf tea & "shot" help minimize blood loss during delivery. The shepherd's purse tincture is also to minimize bleeding after the placenta comes out. The tea bags are also to slow any bleeding and minimize cramps. The bath herbs help with bleeding and healing of damaged tissue.

    Sophia! 😍 Her little "baby belly!"😁 Andrea, we did you get your organization skills from? Was your mama like you? I can't wait for Hannah to get here. Another little "heart" to love! My Italian grandfather used to call us and our kids "heart" when we were little. Even when we were grown.😍 Oh, wait! There's her middle name. Hannah Heart Mills!🤔 Have you given her a middle name? If so, I missed it. 😢

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  6 лет назад +2

      I think we're going to wait until Hannah is born to choose a middle name. My mom would smile at your question, if she were alive. She and I were very different! My mom was harder on herself than she deserved, but domestic pursuits and organization were not her strong suit. She was a journalist for a newspaper and a bookkeeper for several local small business and a horse racing futurity. She did a great job at that, but our home life was not particularly well-ordered. Our house was always clean and cozy, but it stressed my mom a great deal to keep it that way. We teased her because her shopping list was always a bunch of empty bottles and containers sitting on the kitchen counter to remind her that she needed to replace them. For some reason she refused to make a written list. :) She didn't sew at all or cook particularly well or do many of the traditional homemaking tasks. I think she was very glad that I had an aptitude for them from an early age. She basically said, "Go for it!" and got out of the way. (My mom definitely took after Grandma Fern; I took after Grandpa Kenny.) The one thing we both really enjoyed together, for different reasons, was scrapbooking. She loved it for the journaling/recording aspect of it. I loved it for the creativity of it. We spent hours and hours (and hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars!) scrapbooking together.

    • @grateful1929
      @grateful1929 6 лет назад

      Andrea Mills I'm glad you have those memories! I'm 61 now and I too put empty containers on the counter to remind me we're out of this and that. 😂 I make a list but forget to write down half my stuff. 🙄 I wasn't always like this. Just as I age. She sounded like a wonderful mom. I'm just so sorry she left you so soon. She's watching and smiling on her beautiful, wonderful daughter! 😍

      I drink it on occasion, but not necessarily on a regular basis. It is part of the Birth Prep herbs that I've been using for the last month.

    I only have blackberry plants can I make blackberry tea with using the leaves??? Do you put the raspberry tea/vodka mixture in tea and drink it???

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  6 лет назад +2

      Yes, you could use the leaves of a blackberry plant. Their medicinal value is similar to raspberry leaves. altnature.com/gallery/blackberry.htm I'm planning to just down the raspberry leaf vodka shot as is. (I'm a little nervous!) That's not how it's supposed to be prepared for labor (normally you stop after the steeping phase and drink the tea) but I'm hoping it'll still work okay in the event that I don't have time to finish steeping my tea.

      No, I did start doing a course in midwifery about 6 years ago, but I realized it wasn't quite for me. I already paid for the course so every once in awhile I think I should go ahead and finish, but I never do. :)

    Oh and one more question (I Pm'd you in fb if you do get a chance) ..but my other question is: ... the lovely containers you use to store your herbs and such (in your pantry area) .... can you please share where you got them? I need containers that aren't glass but all match and are pretty large :)

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  6 лет назад +1

      I'm so behind on private messages! (I finished our taxes yesterday, so those messages have moved up on the to-do list. Soon...) Anyway, I got my containers from US Plastics. They're food safe plastic and come in quart, half-gallon and gallon sizes. The lids are sold separately, but the combined price for a jar and lid in the quart size is $1.15, which was a very reasonable price to me. Here's a link for the jars; you can search for the lids based on the neck size of the jar: www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=123105

    I have a question for you. will the vodka (that you are using to preserve the tea) cause bleeding? I ask, because as an ex-nurse, alcohol acts as a blood thinner. Is there another way to preserve the tea such as freezing it?

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  6 лет назад +1

      The point of me preparing this ahead is because my labors have become so short that I haven't had time to boil water, steep tea for 30 minutes and then drink it. Freezing it would be a barrier to the quick delivery I'm looking for. Even though alcohol can thin the blood, alcohol based tinctures are very commonly used during labor so I don't see it as a concern. The amount in my little vial is about the equivalent of the amount of alcohol in a bottle of kombucha tea.

    • @paulamonaghan3873
      @paulamonaghan3873 6 лет назад

      :) Thank you for answering my question. I was concerned for you, not being critical. I like that you are using natural products to assist you rather than the drugs that are typically used that have questionable side effects. My thought on freezing was that it could be warmed up by microwave fairly quickly.

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  6 лет назад +1

      I'm not sure what effect microwaving has on the medicinal properties of herbs so I never microwave them. (I do sometimes microwave the water to prepare them, however.) Even just over-heating them can start to destroy the medicinal value. Roots and barks are fine to simmer, but leaves and flowers are too delicate.

      Folic acid is the fake form of folate and is actually bad for us... once I got off folic acid my health has been tenfold better! (This was for the original question ) Please research it and how folate is what we really need :) huge difference.

    Isn’t vodka bad for the baby?

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  6 лет назад +21

      No, there's a very great different between having alcohol and drinking to such an excess that it causes damage to the baby. Even then, the harm is most likely due to lack of proper food (when someone is drinking to the point of harm, they generally drink rather than eat.) I know we've had it drilled into us that alcohol is bad for babies in the womb, but it's not uncommon in other cultures, and throughout history, for alcohol to be consumed throughout pregnancy. All of that said, even if there was a risk of some harm, it's got to be far less than the risks associated with any of the myriad of synthetic hormones and narcotics regularly given to women during labor in the hospital.

      In my husband country (Moldova) red wine is recommended for pregnant woman. Now proper homemade wine not shop bought. A neighbour of my in laws does not drink alcohol normally but did have a small glass of red wine most days during her pregnancy to help with low blood pressure and low iron. My mother in law also used to send me some when I was expecting.

      Teas degrade fairly quickly even when refrigerated. Since I don't know how long it'll be till I need my little "shot", I wanted to be on the safe side and am using the vodka to preserve it's quality until I need it.

    Can u use epsom salt in place of dead sea salt

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  6 лет назад +3

      I would think you could. The recipe just called for regular sea salt, but since I had Dead Sea Salt I thought that would be great to use. Sea salt has been used, traditionally, to heal wounds and some old midwives said they felt like sea water healed even large perineal tears just as well, or better, than stitching them. Even though Epsom salt wouldn't have exactly the same healing benefits as sea salt, they still have plenty of their own healing benefits and would be quite nice!
