- Angela Rayner has scrapped Tory plans to limit social housing to long-term British residents.
The Housing Secretary has officially ditched reforms that would have barred recently-arrived migrants from applying for council houses in England, despite nearly 1.3 million households already on waiting lists.
Rayner has said that she will ramp up the number of new social homes as part of broader planning reforms to boost housebuilding.
Government figures reveal that in 2022-23, 26,176 new social housing lets were given to foreign nationals as the “lead tenant.” Under current rules, migrants need an immigration status that allows access to public funds, like approved refugees or those with indefinite leave to remain, to qualify for social housing.

This country needs Reform
I am a French immigrant of 50 years, and love Britain and hate the injustice of it all. British people have been too tolerant and fair play. In those demonstrations after the littles girls killing, I am pretty sure that there were paid agitators, as well as thugs, but most were frustrated, and at the end of their tethers, normal family people who are fed up and furious to be treated differently from the knife brandishing crowds.

I’m a Christian and attend Sunday Service yesterday. A statement was read out from the hierarchy which to be quite honest left me appalled. It’s message which was solely argued around the violence, disorder and called for the coming together of everyone going forward. It was centred around the governments narrative of “the law will be enforced and punishment metered out”. We as a Judea Christian based society live by our belief in the law and it’s a fundamental principle that we condemn violence and criminality which has no place in it - “the consent of the people” - but the message left me seriously concerned as it failed to address the causes of this latest breakdown of our society.
What appalled me most is our mission is helping people on the margins of society who lived in poverty, stress, fear, homelessness, living from Food banks and have become the forgotten ones… these come from all ethnic and cultural groups. Not once did I hear the message call upon our authoritarian government to address the causes of the disturbances and the massive problems our churches faces daily supporting our struggling and failing communities.
In fact the message came across as the church being scarred to be outspoken and call, as the Police and Crime Commissioner of Hampshire and Isle of Wight did when she said the Government needs to engage in a free and frank discussion with the British people about the causes of the unrest. The message totally ignored the ‘silent majority’ who are living under and lost faith in our divided labelled society. The Elite are burying their heads in the sand and failing to honestly address the problems we face, choosing to gloss over the huge chasms created by identity politics and labelling in an ever increasing intolerant society.

My daughters friend and husband went onto the council housing to bid on available properties. The message that came up was something along the lines of, bidding has been temporarily closed because of an influx of refugees.
Next door became available from our council, 4 African "family" were shown it and not 1 white, English, British was shown, we now have problems because they are partying until 3am in the morning, urinating in the street, drink driving with kids in the car, told them I had it all on cctv(and I did) and they still denied it all, im sick of our people coming last, fact 20% of our social housing is british, im amazed our country has been turned to this....
