  • Owners of BMW R1200RT, or other motorcycle models, like the GS, R and K series, often want to install aftermarket GPS (SATNAV) units or a smart phone cradle rather than the factory GPS. Switched 12 volt power is needed for these units and there is a power socket or "port' available. It is intended for the factory units, but it can be easily repurposed without upsetting the CANBUS system. The trouble is locating the connector and making it work with the third party units. This video shows you how to find the connector on the harness, and gives some tips on how to best use it.
    ► To Purchase:
    amzn.to/3g0t0D5 (factory connector)
    amzn.to/3i0Piqp (cigarette lighter adapter with fuse)
    amzn.to/2Zb1s7j (cigarette lighter adapter without fuse)

    This video was exactly what I needed to install my Admore light! Even though my bike is a 2007, it was spot on. I kept finding post that said "just use the GPS Power Socket" like everyone in the world is supposed to know where what that looks like and where it is!! Thank you for posting. Ride Safe

    That is a neat solution.
    Another possibility is to use that switched wire to feed a relais, that switches on/off a fuse block.
    Then one can go from there to connect whatever one needs.
    The power draw from the relais is practically zero, so the canbus system will not "complain" about it.
    Stay safe...
    Ed.

      Yes, that's true. If you have something more substantial to run than a GPS or phone, a relay with a fuseblock and direct battery connection is a great option.

    Nice video. It should be mentioned that this is a "camhead" 2010 to 2013 model. On my 2010 I found the plug taped to the top of the frame behind (towards the rider) the fork neck. Removal of side tupperware is required to get at mine. Thanks for including the plug part number - it is a little tight in there for soldering.

    Thanks for the time and effort to show this in great detail. I have just found my power plug on my 2012 R1200R on the right side near the front of the fuel tank ( with a 2 wire plug-brown & red/white). It was secured from the factory with a zip tie against the frame. Now I need to order a "plug and play" male plug and then determine if I need a "cigarette lighter" plug as you used, or a USB plug, or if I will splice the wires to the GPS wires.
    You did a fantastic job of showing all of the different scenarios one might encounter. You are a real teacher.
    Do you know if there is enough power in this supply to split and run a GPS & charge a cell phone?

    • @tinderboxarts
      @tinderboxarts  4 года назад +1

      I don't know for sure, but I suspect you probably can. Neither draws much power. You could certainly test the idea by temporarily connecting both. They make "dual" cigarette lighter receptacles or half cigarette half USB. Incidentally, if you use the cigarette lighter style, I wrapped a loop of electrical tape around the junction of the male and female ends just so they don't wiggle apart during riding.

    I've just found this plug on my 2012 K1300R (it's just forward of the battery on this bike). I suspect this circuit is ground-switched by the body control module though, because if you put your positive probe on the plug and your negative probe on the battery negative, the plug is permanently live.
    Some additional evidence here is that the plug was providing 11.5v when the bike had been off for a while, battery voltage (13v) after I turned the ignition switch on, and 14v when the bike was running. There would be no reason to only get 11.5v on this plug unless I was getting regulated power from the BCM in the "off" state.
    I'll re-validate these measurements and come back if I'm proven wrong.

    • @tinderboxarts
      @tinderboxarts  3 года назад

      I never checked that, and I also don't know if the RT and K bikes are identical in this regard. It's important to remember that the CANBUS system keeps the circuit alive for some period normally.

    • @KaldekBoch
      @KaldekBoch 3 года назад

      @@tinderboxarts I re-validated and I was way off. My old man eyes were reading it as 11.5v but it's actually 1.15 volts. It depends on the sensitivity of your multimeter but mine reads a potential of 1.15 volts when the circuit is off. My *other* multimeter (a power probe) reads 0.0 volts.
      Anyway I made a video about my experience (it's more about Quad Lock than the power socket): ruclips.net/video/dyxqWMcmHjY/видео.html

    Thanks for making these videos for the 2012 R1200RT. I just purchased the same BMW, same year. Very helpful!!! I have a question please. Is this optional power socket feasible for charging a cell phone? Thanks in advance.

    • @tinderboxarts
      @tinderboxarts  11 месяцев назад

      That power socket is designed to power a factory GPS unit, which does not draw a lot of power. Your cell phone is also a low-draw device so you could use that circuit for your phone. However, if you plan on adding additional devices on that same circuit you may run into problems. If you try and power a GPS and a phone and a dashcam, you'll be pulling too many amps. So if it's just your phone you'll be fine. If you need to power other devices too, you could consider other options such as adding a HEX EzCan system or using the DIN connector on the fairing with a converter.

      This circuit is designed to power a factory GPS. There are no published specs on the amperage it can supply, as far as I know. You could try a temporary connection for your phone and GPS to see if the system shuts down the circuit and complains. Probably, though, it would be best just to leave it for your GPS and create another circuit for charging your phone or other devices. You can do that either by installing a third party device like the HEX EZcan, or by installing a fusebox directly off the battery terminals.

    This is a great video instruction, even for someone like me. I have no mechanical skills. My "factory" BMW Navigator IV died and I am replacing it with a Garmin XT. I have the "factory" cross bar and mount in place for the Navi IV. Will the power cable that was routed to the Navi IV work for my new XT? I realize I'll need a different mounting bracket and am leaning toward the Touratech.

    • @tinderboxarts
      @tinderboxarts  3 года назад

      I'm not sure about that, but the new Garmin will come with it's own cable. You can always use that as I showed in the video. The thing to understand is that the GPS unit needs to see a genuine Garmin cable or else it will go into "PC" communication mode because it believes you are plugging in a generic cable for communication with a PC.

      Yeah, this is pretty common with all computer controlled vehicles made in the last 10-15 years. The computer needs to see a preprogrammed threshold of distance or time or both with no faults before it will clear. Interestingly, cars now have a "permanent" fault code which is stored for some emissions problems. You can clear the code and turn the light off, but the record will stay in the computer for quite a long time--hundreds of miles. This was done so that when emissions testing is done owners can't just clear the code quickly to pass their state inspection. The problem has to actually be gone and evidence of miles put on the car before the permanent record is finally purged by the computer.

      Do you mean putting the bike on a battery charger or do you mean charging a phone or GPS? This video was about the switched power you can use for GPS or similar device, and it will shut down after the key is switched off and about 20 seconds or so. So the device would be running off bike power when the key is on and charging it's own internal battery in the process. Key off an the power shuts off after 20 seconds or so.
      If you are referring to charging the bike battery, you can charge through one of the accessory DIN sockets if you wish, as long as you have a CANBUS compatible charger. Personally I prefer an SAE cable wired directly to the battery.
