      The Jackson 5 formed before the Monkees.

    • @Mainecoonlady.
      @Mainecoonlady. 10 часов назад +3

      Actually the Beatles were the first boy band. Then Monkeys, Jackson 5 and the Osmonds. As I suspected, they were sort of the “TV” version of the Beatles like the Partridge Family promoted David Cassidy. Unfortunately the Partridge Family ended up destroying David Cassidy’s career by stereotyping him as bubble gum pop. The Monkees TV popularity grew to be a successful band.

    • @dillodefense
      @dillodefense 8 часов назад +2

      Most boy bands are "singers only some add dancing". The Beatles created the music start to finish. They were not cast into a role they auditioned for.

  • @KevinWalsh-m7w
    @KevinWalsh-m7w 15 часов назад +15

    The Monkees were known as the Pre-Fab Four. They were characters in a TV show. They each auditioned for the parts. The group were under control of The TV show producers.
    They weren't allowed to play the instruments and sang songs that were mandatory. Their Popularity sent a message and the 4 actually were accepted as a true band.
    Many hits and long history. I suggest the song " Goin Down ". " Last Train to Clarksville " was a protest to the Vietnam War. It went right over the sensors heads. So it got a lot of airtime.

    They were actually brought together because of a TV show. They were hired individually and became a successful band! I remember running home from school to watch them. Oh goodness, the memories!! A side note: The guitarist Michael Nesmith’s mother invented the correction fluid Liquid Paper!

    • @amyk9175
      @amyk9175 8 часов назад

      Another interesting fact about Nesmith is he wrote the song “Different Drum” and wanted the Monkees to use it on the show, but it was turned down. However a certain Linda Rondstadt and her group, Stone Ponies, picked it up and made it a hit for them, blasting off Linda’s career.

    I was a little kid in the 1960s and my sister and I had all the Monkees albums, and we watched the TV show every week. We had a little record player that we would bring down to the basement and have dance parties with our friends. This group were huge even over here in the UK, the tv show had to be watched or you had nobody to talk to in school the next day, and I remember how all the girls swooned over Davy Jones the lead singer here.
    We knew all their names and argued about which was the funniest, the smartest and so on - childhood innocence unlike today where some kids seem to be born knowing way too much.

    They were the first band to use a synthesizer in their music. The song was called Daily Nightly. They have all passed except Mickey. Davey, the little one died of pneumonia. They had many hits. Last train to Clarksville, Valerie, She hangs out, She, ...I'm a believer, .They had many and had their own show too, which was silly and funny. I am 70 now and as a teenager had the Davey Jones haircut. Lol! I had their posters all over my walls. Davey Jones, Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, Mickey Dolenze. Peter didn't usually sing on any of the songs , but he was lead singer on one. Can't remember the name right now but it was slow and beautiful.

    1967. I had just graduated from 8th grade. I lived in Northwest NJ. Two of my friends and I were big Monkees fans. One of them had 2 sisters who were older than her. One was married and lived in Philly with her husband and kids. Her husband got the 3 of us tickets to see the Monkees at the Convention Center. Our friend’s mom took us over to the bus station across the river in PA and we boarded a bus to Philly. What an adventure! The exciting thing was what happened with her nephews’ babysitter. She lived across the street and went with us. She had one of those madras bucket hats that were popular back then. She had written her phone # on the inside and threw it up on the stage. The next day DAVY JONES called her!!! We were standing out on the porch screaming! Believe it or not I still have the big old ugly necklace I bought. It has a thick fake gold chain and a large pendant with pictures of their 4 faces on it!!! 😊

The Monkees have alot of Hit's their song's were short to fit into their TV show, in the late 60's they were very popular, they sold more album's than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.😮✌️Peace ☮️ your 70 year old forever Young Hippie Gary💃🕺 Great Reaction👍 ✔️ out "I'm a Believer"&"Last Train to Clarksville"😅

    The reason the Monkees have such a 60s reminiscent Vibe is because they were the crossover that brought the hippie generation into mainstream Saturday morning children's television. The Monkees were not just a musical group, they were also the main characters in a musical preteen kids show.
    Despite the visuals of them all being happy carefree and enjoying themselves, they were virtual strangers, the first manufactured boy band and we're actually cast together for the TV show featuring the band's slapstick comedic exploits. Micky dolenz, the guy with the tambourine had all expectations of being named the lead singer but ended up being disappointed.

    They were a TV-appropriate depiction of a "young band of hippies." Take out anything controversial like substance use, overt political messages or s e x. At the same time as the Doors, Janis Joplin, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, the Monkees were the far more wholesome copy - a child-appropriate, comedic "rock band," always finding themselves in the middle of silly hijinx. Part of the successful formula was that they had a part in some actual quality music.

    The Beatles were fans of The Monkees and the two groups had a friendly relationship:
    Mutual admiration
    The Beatles admired The Monkees' acting and music, and John Lennon called them "the funniest comedy team since the Marx Brothers".
    Musical collaboration
    The Beatles allowed The Monkees to participate in some of their recording sessions.
    Mutual support
    The Beatles didn't seem resentful of The Monkees' success. George Harrison said he thought The Monkees could become the best band if they got things sorted out.
    Shared experiences
    The Beatles and The Monkees both lived in communal homes and had adventures that were captured on camera.
