i was born in Los Angeles in 1954 and grew up there for most of my life. Wow. It's great to see L.A. without any freeways! Very nice period film, thank you.
Woah what the? There was 600,000 people in LA in 1920 and 1.2 million people in 1930. The city looks pretty built-out in a 10-year period. I was not expecting to see so much developed in 1931.
From LA Times, Sept. 20, 2020: And on Sept. 13, 1955, this car-loving sprawl of a city experienced the smoggiest day in its history, one that has not been equaled since. The ozone level in downtown L.A. was a lung-damaging 0.68 parts per million. In contrast, this Labor Day weekend was the worst air day in a generation; the ozone level spiked at just 0.18 parts per million.
Whenever I hear people say LA is terrible, I know they didn't grow up with the smog in the 70s. They can never explain just what it is that's worse today, but I know what was worse yesterday.
The smog was not necessarily quite as bad as it looks, because these shots probably were made using the old film emulsions that were mainly sensitive to the blue haze, and doing it without a haze filter.
Back then the city didn't pick up burnable trash until around 1960. Every home and apt building had an incinerator. Imagin the amount of smoke that produced.
Camera, film and lens were probably about as good as it got in terms of home/amateur stuff (apart from any technically-necessary compromises for compactness) - $5 a head in 1931 was *very* expensive for a sightseeing tour so the people taking it likely could afford high-end equipment.
Sorry, but that's not smog. Instead, its just a grainy film and/or morning coastal mist that often comes inland here in L.A., but dissipates as the air warms. Smog wasn't first noticed in Los Angeles until 1943 (there are news reports about it). People thought the smog was some kind of "gas attack" from the Japanese, but no, it was just coming primarily from our cars. ***Actual news report:*** "In 1943, the first big smog scare sent residents running from what they thought was a Japanese gas attack. The once clear coastal air had turned into a tear-inducing haze, and no one knew what caused it. Initially, it seemed like a geographical anomaly. As the number of cars in L.A. doubled from one to two million in the 1940s, air pollution became significant. Smog was initially attributed to chemical plants and backyard trash fires because scientists began to understand the effects of industry and development on the environment. An Arie Haagen-Smit, a biochemist at Caltech, made the connection with car exhaust in 1948. Haagen-Smit still had to fight backed by the oil industry researchers who tried to disprove his theories after his discovery."
Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, so that they can identify the material they need to license, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous RUclips users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Nice aerial views, but they could have used a lens somewhere between the wide angle and telephoto.
Five bucks for a ride. Big bucks back then.
Is that smog before the term was coined.

The Chumash didn't call L.A. the smoky valley for nothing.
