The very fastest players can run in the 4.2x seconds for the 40. Anything under 4.4 sec in the 40 yd dash is very fast. Then you factor in how big these guys are running that fast is just crazy.
The 40-YARD dash is a sprint covering 40 yards (36.576 m). It is primarily run to evaluate the speed and acceleration of American football players by scouts, particularly for the NFL Draft but also for collegiate recruiting
Checking speed in the 40 yd sprint was started by Dallas coach Tom Landry in the mid 60's. The idea was that since most punts were 40 yds or so the tactic was that whoever was faster in the 40 could cover punts better. Then it became a standard. My senior year i was 6-3 & about 230 and i could do the 40 in 4.9, which ain't very fast in the NFL but i was usually faster than most everyone at that size i could run people down from behind and do some damage.
Actually it goes back to Paul Brown in the 1950s. He reasoned the length of an average punt was 40 years so he was looking to find the fastest coverage guys for the punts.
As it has become a more passing league NF L linebackers have actually got smaller than they were back in the 90s so they can cover more ground and not gas out. This allows for large running backs like Henry to break more tackles. Make no mistake though he would be a great in any era.
Whenever i see these NFL videos, i have to keep reminding myself that the players are all like giants. When it’s just them together, there’s no perspective. Put them next to mere mortals or their significant others and you are slammed in the face with the sheer size and musculature of these amazing athletes. They can weigh 250-300 lbs and still pull out a sprint. Like an actual sprint. 6’4” is like a good height for a quarterback so he can see over his offensive linemen’s heads to see the field. Offensive lineman are some of the biggest players on the field as their job is to protect the quarterback or ball carrier. One linebacker from the steelers was literally 6’10”. Luckily his quarterback was big ben at 6’5” and Villanueva was on the end. But still that should give you some perspective. I have no idea what those numbers covert to in metric but you get the picture. It’s raw aggression and masculinity. And i love it.
There’s a video of watching JJ Watt, which was a defensive van for the Houston Texas. He jumped like 6162 inches frat footed and he’s 297 pounds like 67 huge man did that crazy
All teams need to recruit all different types of player abilities. They have to have the speed, strength, stamina, and intelligence just to name a few. If a team doesn’t have the right player for every possible situation then they aren’t going to last very long against those teams who do. That’s one reason the draft is so important. The recruiting staff knows exactly what talent their team needs and they scout for the perfect prospect
For NFL vs college, it all depends on where you are. For example, where I live, northeast Ohio, our college teams are ass, and our NFL team, the Cleveland Browns, are also ass, but the Browns also have one of the biggest and most loyal fanbases in the NFL (which is kind of expected when you have a team that hasn’t been to a national championship in 58 years and went 0-16 in 2017, after going 1-15 in 2016. But we made it the playoffs this past season, so that’s honestly all I can ask for.). So here, the NFL is much larger than college, especially since the the college team that all of us up here root for, Ohio State, is a solid 2 and a half hours away. The rivalry of Michigan and Ohio State is huge here, though. There’s even a restaurant right down the street from me that has crossed of every single ‘m’ in the entire building with a red x lmao.
Usain bolt ran the 40 yard dash at the superbowl a few years back he did it in a 4.22 which is .02 faster than the fastest 40 in the NFL but considering these guys are not dedicated sprinters and are usually rather massive being right up there with the fastest man in the world is crazy.
40 yards does not really work for world class sprinters since many usually need half the race (50 meters) to reach top speed and then excelerate in the last 50.
how fast you run the 40 yd run, it's yards because a football field is 100 yards long. To get maybe a better draft pick (NFL), they do a bunch of athletic tests to be evaluated by NFL scouts in an event called an NFL combine, that's where these numbers come from mainly.
I'm a Bears fan so I'm a little biased, check out Walter Payton and Dick Butkus... you won't be disappointed. Also check out Justin Fields highlights, not consistent as a passer, but he is consistent at being the best athlete on the field.
The unit is in seconds. So when they say 4.2, they mean 4.2 sec to cover 40 yard dash. fyi: 1 yard = 3 feet ; So the athlete runs 40yards i.e. 120 feet in 4.2 seconds!!
all these Freaks but none I MEAN None are more insane than BO JACKSON.. fastest 40 yard dash 4.1 running back or Most agile player ever BARRY SANDERS.. these are 90's players but still no equal today
👏👏👏👏👏 woooo! Agreed !!! He should be in all these videos! Lol seriously he needs to learn how he throws and scrambles like no other! They only started doing that after Mahomes 😂
Aaron Donald is "Small Massive" ? Lol I think you need to convert pounds to Kilograms or whatever you use 280 pounds in top shape (and thats an understatement)
There should never be any video of top NFL players that doesn't include Patrick Mahomes (KC Chiefs #15). He is the best in the NFL and the best thing to ever happen to the NFL. He's changed the game by the way he plays and he's changed the game because every other team is trying to build teams that can compete against him. Not sure he's the best to watch if you want to understand the game, though, because he does stuff no one else could ever do. If you want textbook, stick with Burrow & Allen. If you want to see the improbable, look for Mahomes!
WHO'S YOUR FAVOURITE NFL PLAYER CURRENTLY???
jaire alexander all day
Derek Henry
Also Derrick Henry.. The Titans play in London this year in October.. if you can, go watch him.. He's an absolute MONSTER among boys.
Travis Kelso, Patrick Mahomes KC Chiefs and Deuce Vaugh Dallas. He played his college ball at Kansas State.
Joe burrow. Quarterback for Cincinnati and heisman trophy winner the same year he lead LSU to a national championship. # 1 draft pick that year.
5:14 40 (36.576m) Yard Dash. He ran that in just over 4 seconds
The 40 yard dash gives nfl teams their short burst speed being 95 percent of all plays is under 40 yards
It also happens to be the average distance a punt travels beyond the line of scrimmage.
The very fastest players can run in the 4.2x seconds for the 40. Anything under 4.4 sec in the 40 yd dash is very fast. Then you factor in how big these guys are running that fast is just crazy.

I’m a Niners fan, so Kittle’s my man. He was number one on this video.

Yeah, Free Safties have become Linebackers now and linebackers have become D-linemen.

That’s their speed at tryouts on the 40yard dash. It measures how fast on the jump they are. It’s very fast for big guys
@5:14 That means he runs a 40 yard dash from a standstill in 4.39 seconds. Thats Olympic track speed times.
There’s a video of watching JJ Watt, which was a defensive van for the Houston Texas. He jumped like 6162 inches frat footed and he’s 297 pounds like 67 huge man did that crazy

I watched Aaron Donald in his college years at the University of Pittsburgh and he would annihilate offenses. Much respect to that man.
4.4 in a 40 means it takes him 4.4 seconds to run 40 yards. 40 yards = 36.576 meters

Just for comparison on the 40 yard dash. Usain Bolt's fastest time for the 40 yard dash was 4.22 seconds! (According to Google)
Usain bolt ran the 40 yard dash at the superbowl a few years back he did it in a 4.22 which is .02 faster than the fastest 40 in the NFL but considering these guys are not dedicated sprinters and are usually rather massive being right up there with the fastest man in the world is crazy.

Henry is a modern day Jim Brown.
Equivalent would be a 10.5 second 100 yard dash
how fast you run the 40 yd run, it's yards because a football field is 100 yards long. To get maybe a better draft pick (NFL), they do a bunch of athletic tests to be evaluated by NFL scouts in an event called an NFL combine, that's where these numbers come from mainly.
6 ft 7in 300 plus lb lineman can run 40 yards under 6 seconds. Its insane

The unit is in seconds. So when they say 4.2, they mean 4.2 sec to cover 40 yard dash.
fyi: 1 yard = 3 feet ; So the athlete runs 40yards i.e. 120 feet in 4.2 seconds!!
Most recievers and running backs are Usain Bolt fast. Whilst wearing pads and helmets it slows them down very little.

The 4. Whatever they talk about is their 40 yard dash speed. How fast they can run 40 yards

Yeah, I've not (really) watched the NFL since Joe Montana & Boomer Esiason days. (80's). One of the reasons I watched this ;)
It's a well made video but a little dated. These guys are still playing and still exceptional.
4.2 seconds in 40 yards
In the 40 means 40 yards

It's how fast they can run 40 yrds
all these Freaks but none I MEAN None are more insane than BO JACKSON.. fastest 40 yard dash 4.1 running back or Most agile player ever BARRY SANDERS.. these are 90's players but still no equal today
