She Talks To Angels” is a biographical sketch of a woman dealing with heroin addiction. The lyrics focus on the dark grip the woman’s addiction has over her while also humanizing her as a unique individual with a past, emotions, and a grim future. A lot of tragic euphemisms are used to reference her fate, which the narrator believes is death. According to Chris Robinson (who wrote this song alongside Rich Robinson), the lyrics are based on a woman he knew in Atlanta. She presented herself in a dark style and wore dark makeup, and was a heroin addict herself. Robinson “made up” a story about this woman’s life and her trajectory as the impetus for the lyrics.
100% this. Also I believe it also implies that perhaps she lost a son? (the lock of hair). The pain comes when the needle hits, but there is a smile knowing the feeling that it will bring.
From Song Facts: During VH1's The Black Crowes Storytellers, filmed at The Bottom Line in New York City on August 27, 1996, lead singer Chris Robinson explained that this song is not about one person, but rather a "hot dog" (as he put it) of people that they knew from the Atlanta club scene in their early days. "Not all the best parts" explained Chris, "or the best parts for you." Chris says there was always a girl in the club scene back then with really dark makeup (like Siouxsie And The Banshees), and after thinking about her one day, he scribbled the lyric "she paints her eyes as black as night." He then went on to write an entire biography (completely made up, by the way) about her in the form of the song that then became "She Talks to Angels."
I've been free and clean from a huge heroin addiction for almost 8 years! January 2, 2016 was the day I was re-born! The only New Year's resolution i ever followed through! If anyone reading this is struggling, just hang on one more second, then another...etc! You deserve a life free from those restraints! It gets easier! Just keep on keeping on!
I love Chris Robinson's voice...this is a beautiful song about addiction! "she gives a smile when the pain comes, the pain's gonna make everything alright"!
this is one of my fave bands still to this day. back when musicians still wrote songs with a message or a story to tell. that style seems to be making an underground resurfacing but it's been sorely missed for quite a while.
I always assumed the little boy was her son she lost custody of. I was an addict years ago and a girl I lived with was also and lost custody of her son to her mother. She couldn't hear this song without crying.
I think it's important from a honest opinion of a song to hear the original version first... I will say it kills me often I see someone react to a song thinking that was a great job! I appreciate you going back and doing the original... thanks for your reaction! Have a blessed day!
I was fortunate to see them in a smaller venue in the early 90s and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to, music wise. They are such a great band!
I can still remember you had 50.000 subcribers and now have more than doubled those! Thanks to your free spirit and bubbly personality people become to love your reactions
Myself, being a drug user in recovery, for over 7 years. I've known quite a few heroin addicts. I feel the lyrics of She Talks to Angels are about those who lost their lives as well as her pleas to find a sober life. "The cross around her neck is from someone she has not met, not yet" is about Jesus. At least that's how I interpret it. Families tend to be pushed away from those battling addiction. Many also, even tho they love and care for their loved ones aren't able to be in their lives due to the complications that ensue from addiction such as lying and stealing and watching them slowly kill themselves and turn into someone their loved ones no longer recognize. "The locket of hair in her pocket is from a little boy" I interpreted to be the trauma that ignited the addiction. Whether it be a sibling, or an offspring, or a childhood friend. It was the trigger and why she turned to this life. She feels an abundance of guilt or sadness and is so overcome by grief she turned to substance use to help numb the pain. The sunglasses part of the lyric is literal, not metaphorical. The last thing people who use want is to make eye contact. Pupils are heavily dilated, bloodshot, and have black circles under their eyes. This was my cousins' and mine, favorite song when we were teenagers and she passed away at 15 in a car accident. Then after I started using recreational substances in my adult life and became acquainted with those battling heroin and many losing that battle, this song had an even deeper meaning to me. It reminds me of those who lost their way. That they aren't bad people. Even tho they are battling their demons, daily they hope and pray for the day they can find sobriety and be successful in their recovery.
Those in the fight every day against these mortal fights, please know I love you, God loves you. He alone rescued me from drinking, I now find myself trapped again by anti anxiety med that starts with x. This too shall be defeated by my creator. I’m mad at me that I let this thing sneak into my life yet again. It’s always gradual until it’s sudden is it not? Big hug and love to you all. Hey Britt, I still see you, I still see all the work you are putting in. You have become my number 1 in the reactor field, NOT a easy achievement as I listen intently to what the spirit of the person before me set the table with. I feel privileged to get to watch your quest for truth via music, it has and will continue to serve you well. Can you feel it? Humanity is coming together, I am what ever label you wish to define me as but the fact that I look forward to each of your reactions is proof enough to me that humanity is waking up and grabbing the wheel if this big ship. We might scrape the reef or rocks but I think we are going to avoid ripping our hull open beyond hope. I am much more open to hear all sides of all points of view and with respect either agree or disagree but always done from love and with respect. I give what I get, so don’t get it twisted, I can and will teach life is not a video game if I need to but my preferred path is of love and teaching. Keep doing what you are doing beautiful soul, you are on the path to success. Keep keeping it real and from the heart, it’s a winner. Stay in the fight for good my friends.
This song and 'Lightning Crashes' by 'Live' were on my playlist for years, back when I still used an mp3 player. I'd say she claims to talk to angels for the same reason she tells people she is an orphan. She seeks / craves attention.
The hair is from a little boy (implies an abandoned child). The cross is someone she has not met...not yet. (She has not met Jesus). She talks to angels means she has euphoric states under the influence.
Yes, this IS the original... pro tip: usually when you pull up the lyrics of a song it will [or should] have credits of the song writers and composers.
The song is about an addict. Addicts don’t have traditional families. Pulls the shades down and when the pain comes she is shooting up. The lock of hair could be for a kid. Addicts often have kids but are usually not allowed to keep them. The cross is for god, or the angles. She talks to angels means she is close to death. They call her out by her name. They are waiting for her.
There is only one Reactor that refuses to react to covers before reacting the the original. This is a prime example as to why this is so important and, song/artist knowledge is important as well. Reactors are quick to focus on YT Cover Artists such as Home Free and Jordan thus, completely missing the magic and brilliance of this music. And, it’s absolutely Deflating when reactor’s have no clue to the Artist & Song Facts. Although, we Subs take the time to educate in comments.
Every single comment helps a reactor's views so trust me they love to be corrected. Plus it saves time, they can do more videos. Many people would say the more blind the reactor is, the more entertaining it is to watch, fish out of water
I agree covers aren’t the way to go I personally skip them reactions we as subs also have the opportunity to inform and share knowledge and experiences with the reactor after all they are taking a leap of faith so to speak into new horizons of music and bringing old flames back to life again for the rest of us
You don’t get a true reaction if you already have all of the facts about the song and the artist. I would rather see the reactor go in it blindly and hear it basically clueless of any facts for the first time without any type of information. I would rather see the reactor learn from the subscribers.
When you’re so high, you have no pain, but feel like you’re gonna die. When the pain comes back, you know it’s passing and you’re gonna be ok. Because the pain you’re trying to run from is back.
This is the original, The "ROBINSON" Brothers were infamous for not getting along with each other. Great song, good Ole days, I was 19 or 20 in THE U.S.N.
I always thought by shades he meant the shut the blinds, as you do before getting into an illegal goodie bag, "smile when the pain comes" when the needle breaks the skin, after injection -everything's gonna be alright now.
For me this is one of the three most realistic/impactful songs ever about addiction. I would also recommend Black Balloon by The Goo Goo Dolls and Class A Team by Ed Sheeran.
Hey Britt. Have I ever told you how beautiful you are? This song, I played it in my car with the loop on. Couldn't get enough. You're right, the acoustic guitar is superb. I think you'll LOVE Tesla "Love Song". Another 80's Hair Band.
The song’s lyrics were penned by Chris Robinson, the lead singer and lyricist of The Black Crowes. He wrote it after a chance encounter with a woman in Atlanta who told him about her brother’s struggles with drug addiction. The woman said her brother had died from an overdose, and she used to think he was talking to angels. While this encounter inspired the song’s title, the lyrics are a culmination of Robinson’s own experiences with drugs and alcohol. (The Meaning Behind The Song: She Talks To Angels by The Black Crowes April 24, 2024 / By Misty Charles)
Powerful song about addiction breaking a young woman's life, and feels like a major flip from their normal energetic sound. I think the lock of hair is from a son she had to give up because she can't get clean, and the cross is Jesus, but she doesn't know Him. It could even be that Chris, or the protagonist in the story, is her lover, struggling with the fact that he's in love with someone who can't get out of that life.
I just wanted to tell you, that I discovered your channel recently and I've really enjoyed watching you react for the first time to stuff I've been jamming out to for decades. I've also rediscovered stuff I haven't listened to in ages through your channel and have been turned onto new stuff I would have never considered listening to before watching you react to it, so thank you for that. I would like to make a suggestion for a reaction to the group, First aid kit. They are two sisters from Sweden and are extremely talented, and judging by your other reactions I think you would appreciate them.
This is a song about an overdose. The girl in the song is young -- still lives with her family, even though it's apparently dysfunctional -- she uses (heroin, sounds like) -- the lock of little boy's hair might be from a deceased sibling or her own child, or maybe it's just a random lock of hair that she fantasizes about -- and the cross bears someone she hasn't met yet ... not yet. Yes, she talks to angels. And hopefully they take her where she'll meet that man on the cross, and the pain will finally go away.
IMO their song Sometimes Salvation and the passionate/desperation of Chris' voice/singing in that song about addiction is hard to top (Screw RUclips censorship!) gets me emotional every damn time.
Great song. Love the acoustic guitar and the strong vocals. Lyrics are beautifully enigmatic, hinting but leaving room for us to fill in the blanks with our own interpretations. This is visually reinforced by use of shadows.
What an emotional song. It has stood the test of time, that is for certain. You can really feel for the girl. As well as the gutting feeling of watching someone free fall their life into oblivion. Since it's a made up biography, I've always envisioned the addict's life...sung by someone who cares, but she can't see that he wants to help...and that her only hope might be after she dies and hopefully meets Jesus and the angels that might be her only "redemption" of a wasted life.
Yes, I believe you must be correct. They cut a verse for the "official video", because there are the "full" versions out there with that verse intact. Perhaps they cut it to simply save time on the official video?
Yeah, the reason that a verse or two is cut out was for time to make it MTV friendly, to fill a 3 and a half to 4 minute window. In terms of the meaning of the actual lyric, She Talks to Angels, I'll disagree with many other commenters. I don't believe that specific line has anything to do with death. I think it refers to the euphoria while she's feeling the high. Other lines in the song, such as She keeps a lock of hair in her pocket, wears a cross around her neck, and She'll tell you she's an orphan after you meet her family, refer to the desperation after she's come down.
This song from The Black Crowes is the original song, that others copy another good Black Crowes song it's called remedy you should check that one out too it's really good
"THe lyrics are all kinda comfirming for me all of the confusion because it feels like we're alluding to things here but not really saying exactly what they are point blank period"...........welcome to 90s alternative rock music :)
It seems confusing because the songwriter made it up! Lol I saw an interview with Chris Robinson (lead singer) where he explained it. He got his inspiration from a girl he knew, but didn't know very well. She was a Goth girl & a Heroin addict. He wrote the song imagining what it would be like to be in a relationship with her.
Britt I could be wrong, but I believe the song is about a woman that loses her son. Turns to drugs to cope. Though she's in a dark place in her life she's still good inside and it's yet hopeful of good. I'm a classic country guy so this ain't my genre per sey but it was a song I always liked. Close enough to southern rock for me lol. Keep up the good work hun, love what you're doing!!
My favourite band of all time people on here will request jealous again and hard to handle etc but you should check out some deeper cuts bad luck blur eyes goodbye and cursed diamond
The Black Crows… I don’t feel they got NEAR the level of pure respect they deserve 🖤
They were the only true rock band in the mid-late 80s in a sea of glam butt rock before grunge hit.
Might be because when Shake your Money Maker came out they SUCKED at playing live. Hard to build a following like that.
The internal band drama I am sure had something to do with it
They're on a level with AC/DC .. great original sound
They were criminally underrated in my opinion
This is THE original. One of my all-time favorites

God bless you and your sobriety I too had an addiction problem with a different drug, so proud of you, I’m nearly 20 years clean.
Me too. Stay strong sister ❤
❤❤❤
I love Chris Robinson's voice...this is a beautiful song about addiction! "she gives a smile when the pain comes, the pain's gonna make everything alright"!
The Black Crowes brought classic "blues rock" back to the forefront. Amazing band- amazing sound.
this is one of my fave bands still to this day. back when musicians still wrote songs with a message or a story to tell. that style seems to be making an underground resurfacing but it's been sorely missed for quite a while.
Yes, this is the original. It inspired Darius to write "Let Her Cry" with Hootie and the Blowfish.
Black crows sang the original ..
Seeing Things for the First Time is my favourite tune of theirs. It'll take ya to church!
Black crowes - Thorn in my pride. You won’t be disappointed
Black Crowes discography is loaded with wonderful music. Definitely jump into the rabbit hole. GOOD SOUL ROCK N ROLL MUSIC.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Beautiful song... gives me chills..This is THEIR song...
Chris Robinsons voice is otherworldly, combined with the organ...amazing song
This is the first song I learned and covered when I got my first guitar. VERY DEEP POWERFUL song
I always assumed the little boy was her son she lost custody of. I was an addict years ago and a girl I lived with was also and lost custody of her son to her mother. She couldn't hear this song without crying.
"Shake your Money Maker'" - The Black Crows was a masterpiece!
💯 ❤
As recorded it was. As played by them live in 1991 it sucked.
The Black Crows are an amazing band!
Mr Chris Robinson is an amazing voice. Super under rated band. One of my favs
One of my favorite songs by Black Crowes. A very gentle treatment of a nasty problem in today's world.
I think it's important from a honest opinion of a song to hear the original version first... I will say it kills me often I see someone react to a song thinking that was a great job! I appreciate you going back and doing the original... thanks for your reaction! Have a blessed day!
The cross from someone she hasn't met, not yet ( Jesus)☮️
I was going to clue Britt into the meaning of this line, but you beat me to it. 😊

Possibly also an abortion she was forced to have?

This song and 'Lightning Crashes' by 'Live' were on my playlist for years, back when I still used an mp3 player.
I'd say she claims to talk to angels for the same reason she tells people she is an orphan. She seeks / craves attention.
Fabulous song about a sad situation. Addiction in any form is devastating to the person and everyone in their life.
You dont understand it? Wonderful. You dont take drugs. Keep it that way. Thank you for the reaction.
The hair is from a little boy (implies an abandoned child).

This is the original, and the best in my opinion.
I've always liked this song, the vagueness leaves it open to interpretation, yet you understand the premise, sad, yet longing, haunting lyrics.
Some people just live to feel that dark place in life ... and want a way out of that hell ... its a truly sad song
Great band.....really honest no bull.... rock n roll🤟👍

Ann Wilson of Heart has a fantastic cover of this song as well.
It's about a girl suffering from addiction, and losing her family and child.
The pain is when the needle hits. The pain gonna make everything alright...
The reason why its cut up is it was on MTV. They were notorious for editing songs!!!

"THe lyrics are all kinda comfirming for me all of the confusion because it feels like we're alluding to things here but not really saying exactly what they are point blank period"...........welcome to 90s alternative rock music :)
it's not the actual original, "official" videos rarely are
This is the only version of this song for me!!!
It's time for Sometimes Salvation
It seems confusing because the songwriter made it up! Lol
I saw an interview with Chris Robinson (lead singer) where he explained it. He got his inspiration from a girl he knew, but didn't know very well. She was a Goth girl & a Heroin addict. He wrote the song imagining what it would be like to be in a relationship with her.
She’s an addict, you don’t get clean until you go through the pain. The pain is gonna make it alright.
"The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary HD" official music video 👍
The video is a shorter edit version of the song. That's why parts are missing. You should find the full album version of the song.
My favourite band of all time people on here will request jealous again and hard to handle etc but you should check out some deeper cuts bad luck blur eyes goodbye and cursed diamond
This is the original from 1990..its about a woman dealing with heroin addiction
Another 90's group I would recommend listening to is Type O Negative. Specifically "Love You to Death"
I am pretty sure it was cut for the video. The lyrics you have are from the album version.
The Cross is someone she hasn't met yet meaning, "God".
“The cross is someone she has not met, not yet” reference to Jesus.
This is 100% the original. The singer and guitarist are brothers. And most of their songs are about heroin addiction. They are all sober now.
