For someone who pays attention to the industry and has seen all the portal content, AND knows nothing about portals this has answered all my questions. Great video and and super informative. Thank you
Great video and amazing beast of a truck. I'm sure everyone wishes they can have this set up on any truck but only our dreams are big and not our bank. You the man bro. Again great video
So appreciate you guys! Awesome content always and fun to boot! So glad someone finally gave the real cost of adding portals to a Yota. It's easy to drop $20K and get portals only later to realize that you have got to add in some costly mods to accommodate them. BTW, you didn't add in the potential need/cost for re-gearing depending on the tire size, etc. ($3K?). And that every 3K miles you have the equivalent of '4 more diffs' (LOL) to change out the oil of ...necessitating tire removal. Small deal I know, but noteworthy. Keep the vids coming bro!
I wonder what the basis is for each manifacturer's maintenance plan on their portals. The Werewolf portals are 5k miles, and the 74welds are 3K miles for oil changes.
We are friends with and located right near Maxima Racing Fluids. We sat down with their engineers and spent time showing them our gear boxes, talking with them about what we saw in racing and let them give us advice and education on oil. Our recommendations are conservative. Can you go longer than 3K, ya, but we look at it like this. This is a performance product and you should treat it like one. Oil changes are cheap and easy. Without going into a bunch of detail, the gears actually are not touching when they engage. There is a microscopic fluid film from oil that creates a buffer between the gear surfaces. As debris gets in the oil that microscopic layer breaks down and you end up metal on debris on metal. The his can lead to pitting over time. Keep the oil clean and give it the opportunity to do what it was designed to do. Protect and cushion.
You’re higher in the air, but more weight down low, less shock preload so more travel, but you’re a bit taller and you’re a bit wider. I’d say it’s about the same as a normal lift in regard to getting off-camber.
The real issue is that every few years another portal comes and dies and there's no parts for orphan portals. Because the only market is show trucks and "influencers" and there's just not that many. Side by side portals are $2500-3500. That's where they'll need to be on price to have staying power. Otherwise I'll just buy a unimog or Volvo 303. Or put portals on my side by side. Love the idea. Need to get realistic with the prices.
74Weld has changed all that... they've stood the test of time and aren't going anywhere. Price is high but worth it. Also, we have 3 portal installs on the calendar this month alone, none of them are influencers.
@@mtnyotas We'll see in 15 years. Time is the filter. Not enough time has passed to have knowledge either way on this. A few dozen units does not a long term product make. It could go either way. We don't know yet. But historically it just hasn't worked very well. A big red flag for me is the manufacturing claims. Why on earth would they be making them on a CNC mill beyond the prototypes? Our shop has those in-house and still wouldn't do that for this type of component. Producing efficiently should be job #1 in getting costs down. If they could connect with a production manufacturing company to do this, they'd have a much better shot at long term success. Even sand casting plus machining should bring costs down significantly. I hope they have success. Just not sure I see it. Not when the cost of just the parts is comparable to a complete 406 ready to go.
You can get to a 37 with 74Weld pretty easily! There's a bit less width, and wheel offset matters a lot there too... either way you're realistically going to need to do some clearance work. 35s look too small on 74Weld though, IMO.
@@mtnyotassolid data. Gaining track width to add stability, getting gear reduction, insane ground clearance, lift for tires that would require the work that had to be done with any lift to actually run tires like this…how would you get all these gains otherwise?
I do not get it. Why not re gear … seems like 4 more component sets of hardware if it fails you cannot easily find replacements for ? Aside the money 20k - 30k a lot of people can drop that on a toy.
@@mtnyotas I get you are getting a lift built in, from what I am seeing it seems like you adding 4 more components that can break and will be not as easy to source parts. would it not be simpler to do a lift and add a dual transfer ? I am not trying to beat the thing up I am not seeing the real advantage for the average truck. in a competition truck maybe it makes sense. Don't get me wrong as someone who has a small mill and lathe I love to see this kind of machine work and engineering. but I just do not get it ... the cost , the weight and then the potential problems when they fail. what are the advantages over a dual transfer case ?
21k for a portal lift is insane… We have been putting portals on SXS for years for way less money.. these are overpriced for no reason other than Toyota fan boys being dumb enough to pay that amount of money
Bruh, if you never wanted portals because you know it would end generational wealth in your family, don’t watch this video… I see an episode of intervention in my life..
😂😂😂 what a joke ! The markup on this crap is insane. Not even including the grift job you will get into by paying to have them installed or anything else installed for that matter. C'mon people buy some wrenches and get er done. Portals ,,,🤣🤣
@@74weld it's always nice putting new stuff on the trucks. BUT the markup kills it for most. After the initial R&D and sourcing how much ya got in one of them? I will go high and say 1000 per. But mark em on up to 15k that's the aftermarket way lol.
I've been repairing heavy equipment for 35 years Suzy sack squeezer I have you beat in every way in the build it fix it category. Yes my knuckles are tough since you asked
@@MR-bp3in I won’t dive too much into your comment…What I will tell you is the raw chunk of aluminum for just the knuckle starts out its life as a $800 block of 7075 then spends 7 hours on a 500K 5 axis machine. We then have to make a box, gears, custom unit bearing, bearings, caliper bracket, steel inserts, misc components, custom rotors, then assemble, box and ship.

Thanks so much! Glad you found it helpful!!!
Great video! Thanks for the shout, but more than that, good education and information provided here!
Absolutely, thank you!
And done worry. We have a bulletproof new drop in Tacoma rack in the works
Let’s go!!!

Thanks for the information!
Sounds a lot more expensive once you factor in all the necessary mods beyond the portals.
Not all of them are 100% necessary, but they're LIKELY going to be things you do for a 3rd Gen Tacoma in this case...
Please put out a video of a truck with all of these upgrades out in the wild doing some hardcore Wheeling. That would be awesome to watch!

The portals themselves are the regear so that's not necessary.
You may want more than a 22% reduction(74Weld) depending on how massive the tires are. :)@@jgm113
Bad ass! I need for my Tundra! 🤤
Awesome info on pretty much everything one needs to know if interested in putting portals on a Taco.
Ooooof. Worth it if I worked for Boeing!
Wayyyy too inside LOL

Can I do this with my 2015 CM Tundra?
love these! got them on my g65!
So how much to tub and portal a Subaru Crosstrek to run 35s
No
That’d be sweet honestly
I just want to know if it makes things sketchier in off camber situations.

Will y’all install 74weld portals?
Absolutely
I will say they are cool as hell though 🤷🏼♂️🤣
How far can you drive before the oil heats up and degrades ????
@@Werewolf4x4 ..I mean like can you drive across country without them heating up too much ...
What is the smallest tire i can use on the 74weld?
I wouldn't recommend going under 35s.
How do portal tow ? Need to tow a off road trailer .
Much like a regear, they give you more torque so they help!
With the 74 weld since it has about 2" less of lift would a 35" tire work?

Thanks for the amazing information. And I was complaining about paying $350 to upgrade my air intake :). Well time to sell a kidney.
Just when I think I’m done with the build ……. 😅
I can see portals being very useful and great in off-road but I don’t feel there very cost effective
Nice video, but wow that get $$$ real quick. At least if you want to go down that rabbit hole you can plan it out from the beginning of your build.
Not worth it
