    I have used the Lee Loader like yours but for 30-30 since around 1967. My 30-30 is a Winchester 30 WCF circa 1938. Pop bought it used for me for my 16th birthday. He paid $5 a week to the gun shop until the $65 was paid. When he gave the rifle to me, he said that it wasn't mine until I brought him a whitetail which I did that first year. He and I would hit the range every weekend and shoot 100 rounds each. I would reload them when we got back home, keeping his fired rounds separate from the ones I fired from my rifle. We'd get around a dozen shots from each brass cartridge before they would start to split. Then we'd buy cheap big bags of once fired empty brass and do it all over again for a while. Those were the best days of my life !!!!!

      Sounds like some great memories were made around reloading , the range and hunting. I'm doing the same with my son, he's six now, but he helps reloading, passing me the cases then the bullets, good to learn all aspects of shooting.
      Thank you for your story.

    Single shot I guess no crimp. Bullet did not look seated to what may be crimp line. Nice to see crimping for those with lever guns

    • @outdoorsythings2573
      @outdoorsythings2573 Год назад +3

      yes, good eye. It definitely was not on the crimp line, and you inadvertently bring up a good point why ppl should never copy reloading from utube. the bullet is seated to my rifle ( henry single shot ), where it is just kissing the lands because this rifle has a long throat. if i was reloading for my lever action, i would have crimped, which you can do on this reloader. once bullet has been made, you flip it over and put it in where the seating stem goes, and give it a few taps, and it roll crimps nicely. this bullet, however, seats tightly and is fine for my single shot.
      sometimes the bullet is a tad small, and i will give it a fast crimp. i really should show how to crimp with this loader as iv been asked before.
      again, good eye.

    I have a 450 bushmaster, do you think the 45/70 kit would load for it?

    • @outdoorsythings2573
      @outdoorsythings2573 Год назад +1

      i dont think so. 45-70 has that big ol rim, and the rim fits into the bottom of the die. bushmaster doesn't have that big rim because it was made to fit the AR platform ( magazines ). I dont see it ending well trying to reload with that set of dies. if your trying reload on the cheap or stay portable look into the lee hand loader, its a portable press single stage, there about $50 canadain and the dies are about the same, and a set of bushings are like $3.99 so you would be all in for around $120 canadain depending were you bought it. i have one, and it's nice for taking to the range and making up loads, or for calibers, i only have a few brass for. shoot, reload my bass shoot more. It's fast once you get used to it. ie prime everything, powder in all the cases, place bullet in all them, press in place, crimp. an assembly line, basically. once set up, i averge 10 rounds a min, but im flying and have been using it for years. i tend to stick with the rule of dont load calibers rifle not chambered for, and dont try reloading with dies not ment for the caliber. keeps it safe and simple. sorry for long post. best of luck and happy shooting

    When loading cast lead bullets, is it necessary to lubricate them? I am looking to get into reloading 45-70 in the future and am already used to casting musket balls for my muzzle loaders. However, I am completely clueless when it comes to loading rifle cartridges.

    • @outdoorsythings2573
      @outdoorsythings2573 2 года назад +2

      yes you lubricant them, unless you powder coat them. powder coating is the cats meow. and so many colors. throw bunch bullets in the powder coat em good, put on cookie tray all nice standing up right put in oven, bake, take out and done. my wife likes pink or purple, and i like blue or clear, also because i down load my wife so just seeing the different color i know whos bullets are whos.

    Do you not need to lube hardcast bullets more than what's already in the grooves before seating?

    • @outdoorsythings2573
      @outdoorsythings2573 2 года назад

      hey there anthony. fast answer is nope. longer answer is lead is slick on its own and has been used as a lubricant, the lube/wax in the groves is just to help with leading in your barrel, something that shouldnt be a problem if you keep your fps down under 1900. trap door loads for the 45-70. i for the most part use powder coated hard cast now and dont need the wax. if your wax falls out of your grooves can buy a toilet wax seal from any hard were store and push that into the grooves. works great and its very cheap. but i think the answer you wanted was nope you dont. just flare the mouth of the case if your hard cast is not sliding in easy. find a socket that matchs your 45-70 cast and give it a small tap to flare case, proceed to load as you normally would.

    • @AnthonyPetrone
      @AnthonyPetrone 2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the detailed answer. I've only loaded jacketed bullets so your tip on fixing fallen wax from grooves is great. Nice to hear no extra step as well.
      I must have became confused and mixed up when I was looking up if cases with small dents in them are OK to use, people were saying it's fine but caused from too much lube when resizing.
      And that must be what happened as I had a buddy full length resize for me since my rifles barrel and/or chamber was switched out during a repair since I had last shot them.
      Thanks again. Excited to be loading some hardcast real soon.

    Is the dipper on the kit used only for smokeless or can you use it with black powder? Great video by the way, despite you almost losing your phone. lol

    • @outdoorsythings2573
      @outdoorsythings2573 2 года назад +1

      you can use it for black powder, there is a chart for that. remeber lets say lee dipper holds ( made up #) 10 grains of xxxtype powder according to the lee dipper chart, it would NOT be 10 grains of black powder. i lost my powder measure few years ago just befor a hunt and used the lee dippers but i had to google what the dippers held in black powder, since you measure black powder by volume not weight there is many many things you can use to measure. old caseing from reloads hold x amount, just google say 9mm empty hold how much bp, that will get you start. but short answer would be yes you can but need to know how much the volume is. sorry long winded answer.

      crimp if useing in a tube magazine.
      can crimp useing the kit. put finished round in top of die bullet faceing down, get deprimer base, ( the small black base bullet sits in, place over the end, and give a few small taps with your rubber hammer, the primer hole will be over the primer so safe to hit. i some times chamfer , basically as needed. and that is rarely.
