well its difficult to put an actual time on practice as one needs to practice until one has improved, but at beginner level I would say half hour minimum to possibly an hour, but as you are a beginner you may find half hour satisfactory as there wont be much you need to practice at that level anyway. As you progress and get better, the practice time increases.
Absolutely! Try them - you cant comment if you dont and you wont know till you actually do try them! They will still work regardless and therefore no harm done! Let me know what you think of them when you have them and have worn them in for a few weeks please. Alison
That is the best video anyone can make , just like the art itself , "the way people keep stuff" & "the stuff they have" kinda gives away their deepest intuition and their unique personality ! Love you Alison ! That was perfect ;)
yes, you should loosen the bow each time you put it away in its case. You need the tighten the bow in order to apply rosin as you wont be able to apply any when the bow is loose.
Good advice for early years players. A 'D' string could double up as an 'A', 'cause if it's cheap as you recommend, over tensioning it isn't going to be an issue. Perhaps your two rosins are for warmer and cooler climates Alison? regards...Phil
I like them and I have but a few weeks ago just taken them off for new ones. They depend on what violin you have, but they are soft and sweet. I also find that they are nice after a few weeks, but then they soon 'turn' and lose their sweetness and everything they had in the start, so I personally find they need replacing fairly quickly. I now have dominants with a Gold Label E string and they are great!
I am so glad that I found you. I am a subscriber. I used to play over 40 years ago and now in my close to retirement years I am taking up the violin once more. I have checked and their are no decent teachers in my town, so I learning online. I don't aspire to be in an orchestra. I just want to play for myself and hopefully others will enjoy. Thanks again.
i just fancied a change, but i have to say that im not too impressed with the pirastro as it causes a lot of scratch, so I have changed back to the Wren. A lot depends on bow, strings etc and just changed to Dominant strings with a Gold Label E, so i will see what differences the Wren rosin makes.
I'm a fiddler myself and I love the Helicores. I can leave my violin in its case for a week, come back to it and its still in tune. I know the dominants will have a richer sound but, with the music I love, the Helicores are fantastic.
I'm always missing something to write with... I have no idea why I never keep that in my case; putting one in my case right now lol -- I always enjoy seeing what other people are doing -- thanks Alison =)
I would have to reload all my videos onto youtube and record them on non-HD which would result in very poor quality all round, which is why i upload in HD - as do most users on RUclips. Sorry, i dont know what else to suggest?
perfectly fine if you know what you want and the seller is legit and gets good rating. Amazon themselves are fine too. Look on the net for violins and when you see what you like there may be a better price on Amazon. Violins in general are ok from the net at beginner level.
I got the Evahs yesterday and already I love them! They're soft to play on and they sound so sweet. I previously has Infeld Reds and the Evahs are so much better in my opinion. Thank you again for your opinion I'm so happy that they're this good because they were expensive. Thank you again.
Its best to take the violin to a professional as humidity and poorly installed strings can cause the pegs to slip so it depends on how the strings look in the peg area. As for re-hairing a bow, its the job of a professional violin reparier/maker (luthier), not me as im just a player and teacher so I dont know how to do this. Sorry.
Helicores on my violin are just awful im afraid - it totally depends on what violin you have to what strings you have. I also have a mix of Dominants, Gold Label and Passiones and they all stay nicely in tune apart from the Passione. Its all dependant on your violin.
wow Alison you know I usually carry the same essentials, except for an extra pack of frankfurters so in my case there's a tuner, the rosin, the extra strings, the clippers, the spare bow pencils and the frankfurters. Sometimes I even forget the actual violin itself and just bring the frankfurters but what ever happened to all those fancy tuners you once had you are carrying a tuning fork? woah that's old school violin Alison hmm neway cheers, love the earrings, looking good ; )
I have always said I would rather have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it. Although I am just starting the fiddle playing and dont know anything about it I really like your vids on the violin lessons
Ok just bought a old violin and the resin was 38 years old hard and cracked going to buy some new just so I don't mess it up better safe than sorry thank you for your response
Hello Alison, I am just a beginner and have no spare strings, but taking your advise I will probably try to get some now. Have you had any videos on replacing a string? I am almost afraid that I would break my violin if i tried to string it up. Your Student Jeff
yes you are right. Its actually a very nice case, but its about 20 years old - its not old and musty yet, but its strong and sturdy and can withstand knocks and heavy ones at that. The cases one gets with these cheaper violins are rubbish and the slightest knock throws the violin totally out of tune. So mine does the job well so no need to change it, plus yes, because it looks beaten up, people wont steal the battered looking violin, they will steal the nice shiny one....! lol :))
I find I need to actually practice with both my spare and main bow. They both have very different feel when playing (my main bow has quite a heavy tip, and my backup bow is carbon fibre), and if I absolutely had to switch, I wouldn't want to mess up techniques by not being able to do them with a completely different bow.
Haha I don't know why but I also keep rubber bands in my case. I seriously don't know why though, I got like four of them in there :) And I like your pencil, it looks like the flag of Norway :)
Uhm excuse me, but I'm going to start playing the violin quite soon. I'm curious as to how long I should practice playing my violin, since I'm the type of person who would literally play as LONG as I can until I get better. And since I've read that it's not a good idea to play TOO MUCH for it can wear out the strings quicker. But I really don't know how long "TOO MUCH" is. So what would be the average practice time with a little extra time for improvement everyday?
frankfurters? Whatever floats your boat - personally I like to bring a pack of Mentos with me to rehearsals....!! :) I only carry a fork as i dont need the tuners (i have been playing for over 27 yrs) and they are too big as i want to fit in the nail clippers! lol
More or less the same as I keep in my bow case (I'm a bass player) the spare bow came in useful when my desk mate turned up and had left his bow at home, I don't carry spare strings though as bass strings are so expensive. I did get caught out with the emery board once, and too long nails.
This is whats in my case= A gold rosin Violin Bow A protecter black sheet that I put on my violin and when I close my case it protect the violin Shoulder rest from the outside of the case there a zipper Note book Pencil Rubber Small clean T-shirt to clean And a small perse
Well, that did it for me. The very next time I'm in Windsor, I will stop at the castle and tell Liz that the TRUE English Princess can be found right here on this channel. I'm sure that she will agree!
Does the type of rosin you use matter? I've always used the cheapest rosin, but there are so many more expensive ones that I can't help but wonder if it makes a difference.
Hello. Thanks for all of your great videos. I am wondering, what kind of case do you have, and is there any room in a shaped case like that to store a shoulder rest?
A tuning fork saves space and it’s in my case all the time. I only need one note (A) to tune the rest of the strings from. Once you have your A in tune, you tune the rest of the strings off that by listening out for perfect 5ths.
Ok maybe also a 32acp if the musician next to me wont stop sneezing on me! That's why you keep extra rosin. You never let them use your rosin. just the extra rosin because they'll probly sneez on it!
I don't have many things in my violin case though, i still haven't bought another violin and I'm still working with my cheap violin, I've got: My violin My rosin ( it's a light and a cheap rosin... ) My violin bow And a cloth to clean my violin That's all. I just had a question, why do you take a pencil with you??
Thank you for the information Is there a specific cloth velvet/silk /cotton you should use I wish I had put one in because I think the bow holder is the reason it caught on and cracked the spot near the f hole
Uhmm will we get the violin bridge after using it or putting it in the case? Im a beginner and when we brought my violin .. the sales man told me that i will get the violin bridge after i use it or put it in the case because if not the strings of my violin will be broken . I would like to ask because if i always get the bridge .. the tune of my violin will not be the same
Mine doesnt too but my case has some space around the neck area and i usually put it there. It's just slightly annyoing when you walk you can hear a clank
Its an 1850 Mittenwald violin. Originally a baroque violin that has been turned into a classical violin - that happened to a lot of violins around the classical period.
I was also told, you may need a little napsack or purse for your shoulder rest.... Also, we like to dress our violins up too...that's extra I know...but the mute is quite inexpensive and has Swarovsky Gems...sold on ebay.com.... Just incase you're a male and need a cumberbun or female and need dress shoes or need a sandwich or a snack prior...for quick energy before the show...
What viola do you think I should get? My price range is $200- $300 at most. Also... did you say that your rosin had actual gold in it? Or is it just a musical figure of speech/ name? Im familiar with all rosin but I have never heard of gold infused rosin.
Im afraid I dont play the viola so i really wouldnt want to advise you on something i dont know about im afraid. I can help with violins, but violas are a little different. My suggestion would be to play some and see what you like and dont like about the tone. What i like may not be to your taste for example and vice verser.
+Jesse Calcat No, the hair on the second bow SHOULD be loose! By keeping it taught, you will ruin the hair and the bow plus is does not get caught in anything.
I'm guessing that the last thing someone would want to do with an instrument they consider valuable is to put it in a very expensive case,so as to not attract attention to it.I believe that I'm a bit anal retentive because I look at the finish of your violin and I'm absolutely sure that it is WAY more in cost than mine. I can't stand to get a blemish on my surface and I should not be worrying about that. A violin should look at its been played quite a bit.
Hi, it isnt a brand, its a German violin over 200 years old and was based on the Stradivarius design.
well its difficult to put an actual time on practice as one needs to practice until one has improved, but at beginner level I would say half hour minimum to possibly an hour, but as you are a beginner you may find half hour satisfactory as there wont be much you need to practice at that level anyway. I like how you have something spare for if something happens to someone else thats nice! :)
That is the best video anyone can make , just like the art itself , "the way people keep stuff" & "the stuff they have" kinda gives away their deepest intuition and their unique personality !

their rosin will probably be fine. Its only worth getting a better roisin with better strings, but it certainly wont hurt...
I am so glad that I found you. I am a subscriber. I used to play over 40 years ago and now in my close to retirement years I am taking up the violin once more. i do, type in 'replace' into the search box of my channel at it will come up with the video. I cant link videos here.
I'm always missing something to write with... I have no idea why I never keep that in my case; putting one in my case right now lol -- I always enjoy seeing what other people are doing -- thanks Alison =)
*I only have a student violin!😭*
welcome - next ones to try are the Passiones! they are all the rage!!
I would have to reload all my videos onto youtube and record them on non-HD which would result in very poor quality all round, which is why i upload in HD - as do most users on RUclips. Sorry, i dont know what else to suggest?

I really like your violin and actually play violin and my orchestra class or what ever is having a concert on Thursday!
I play violin sorry

it goes over the bridge and 'softens' the sound. Im going to do a video on it....
wow Alison you know I usually carry the same essentials, except for an extra pack of frankfurters so in my case there's a tuner, the rosin, the extra strings, the clippers, the spare bow pencils and the frankfurters. oh that just gave me an idea for my bow which has a cheap clip keeping it in the case... THANKS!!!!
Wow dat bow is loose!!
Yes, its not now as I had it fixed.
yes - buts its a minefield! I have just done a video on this that will come out soon as i cant really explain here - it will take me forever :)
Thank you so much, I have a violin class in 2 days and don’t know what to bring!
Hello Alison, I am just a beginner and have no spare strings, but taking your advise I will probably try to get some now. Have you had any videos on replacing a string? I am almost afraid that I would break my violin if i tried to string it up.

i dont honestly know. I have had it since I was 10.
Will do! Thanks again.
Haha I don't know why but I also keep rubber bands in my case. I seriously don't know why though, I got like four of them in there :) And I like your pencil, it looks like the flag of Norway :)
Hi um how can I solve my slipping pegs and can you please do a video on it? Also a video on how to rehair a bow? Thank you!!!
thanks for your help! I think I'll go for them :)

I would keep a sandwich! : )
Oh, and a small sample wine bottle. : )
Ha ha lol
small sample? NAH BIG BOTTLE
I can’t use the bow yet. My teacher won’t let me, so I am just doing pizzicato stuff first. I just started.
This is whats in my case=
A gold rosin
Violin
Bow
A protecter black sheet that I put on my violin and when I close my case it protect the violin
Shoulder rest from the outside of the case there a zipper

Pencil
Rubber
Small clean T-shirt to clean
And a small perse
Well, that did it for me. The very next time I'm in Windsor, I will stop at the castle and tell Liz that the TRUE English Princess can be found right here on this channel. I'm sure that she will agree!
Beautiful
hi im lily just wondering when did you start violin i just started last week =] =] =] =] oh and piano started that 1 year ago =] =] =] =]=] =] =] = ]
crannog 4 years old
OMG you use the same strings as me!!!!
It's just string dude, calm Down
Dose the resin ever get old ??
Does the type of rosin you use matter? I've always used the cheapest rosin, but there are so many more expensive ones that I can't help but wonder if it makes a difference.
Hi Question
Do you write a book that I could buy
taking notes like I’m back in college
Thanks
Mrs S
Still practicing every day
Hello. Thanks for all of your great videos. I am wondering, what kind of case do you have, and is there any room in a shaped case like that to store a shoulder rest?
i always keep a card with my contact details on glued in my case.If you are young use your parents contact details.
This may be a dumb question but what violin case do you have
Probably a daft question but why a tuning fork & not a digital tuning device, would that be better over more notes ?
A tuning fork saves space and it’s in my case all the time. I only need one note (A) to tune the rest of the strings from. Once you have your A in tune, you tune the rest of the strings off that by listening out for perfect 5ths.
Ok maybe also a 32acp if the musician next to me wont stop sneezing on me! That's why you keep extra rosin. You never let them use your rosin. just the extra rosin because they'll probly sneez on it!
Spare rosin lol me too exept everybody wrecks mine instead
I don't have many things in my violin case though, i still haven't bought another violin and I'm still working with my cheap violin, I've got:
My violin
My rosin ( it's a light and a cheap rosin... )
My violin bow
And a cloth to clean my violin
That's all.
I just had a question, why do you take a pencil with you??
I have a pencil in case I want to mark up the score for any reason.
welcome :)
Whats the last thing again? The tiny black thing that you said you put on the end of your violin?
+Hengalvin Mute
Hi I'm getting new strings this week do you recommend the Evah Pirazzi ones?
Helpful. Thanks.
Thank you for the information
Is there a specific cloth velvet/silk /cotton you should use
I wish I had put one in because I think the bow holder is the reason it caught on and cracked the spot near the f hole
Doesnt matter.
yay! i know!
Now for 100,000!!!!!!!
Do you happen to know 100,000 people by any chance.......
What's a "mute"?
This helps me so much, I just got a violin today and I have no clue how to do ANYHING, what so ever. Thanks, byeeeeeee!☺😊😀😁😃😄😇
Uhmm will we get the violin bridge after using it or putting it in the case? Where do i put my shoulder rest?
I have a video for that.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor thank so much💙
not really
can you recommend any really high quality nice looking oblong cases thanks
Jason Halliday Have you tried a Google search? Its not something I have ever looked into im afraid.
no problem I found one
thanks anyway
I have shoulder rest but my case does not have any place to put it
Whyyyyy
Mine doesnt too but my case has some space around the neck area and i usually put it there. It's just slightly annyoing when you walk you can hear a clank
What year is your violin made and what nationality is it?
Its an 1850 Mittenwald violin. Originally a baroque violin that has been turned into a classical violin - that happened to a lot of violins around the classical period.
Mine is black the cloth inside is green my violin is brown
Why am I getting flashbacks and I am not a VET of WAR...too cool...
I like this side of you
I was also told, you may need a little napsack or purse for your shoulder rest....

Thank you :) Ive been going on a few different channels to find something...
dam :(
The hair on your secondary bow should NOT be that loose. It's bad for the hair and it can also get caught in and shut in the case when you close it.
+Jesse Calcat No, the hair on the second bow SHOULD be loose! By keeping it taught, you will ruin the hair and the bow plus is does not get caught in anything.
awe come on now, show us those snacks in there.lol my favorites are m&m's.
+SHADOWMAN296 Sadly i do not keep snacks in my case - mainly because they would either go off or i cant fit them in! :))
Why don't u take m&Ms outside of the case
The word is teacher not cheater as you are saying. Pl. correct.
Im actually saying 'tutor' since thats what I am and that is the name of my channel; The Online Piano & Violin Tutor.
haha, there is a cunning reason for this....
its the simple and obvious we always forget lol
Hahaha! No, but I wish I did! ;)
I'm guessing that the last thing someone would want to do with an instrument they consider valuable is to put it in a very expensive case,so as to not attract attention to it.I believe that I'm a bit anal retentive because I look at the finish of your violin and I'm absolutely sure that it is WAY more in cost than mine. wait how do u use a mute
Brandon DaCookie it goes over the bridge and dampens the volume.
❤️💐
You should add a pencil sharpener as well :D
i can't inturn fast
Alison it looks like your violin does not fit in your case
It does perfectly, It just looks that way because I have been fiddling about with the excess stuff I have in there for the purpose of this video!
Forget the extra bow, Alison. You need a new case! That one has a lot of...."Character."
stop it you....behave lol!!
