my first reaction when i heard this song was this doesn't sound like a patriotic song but after listening carefully do the words i realized that this song isn't meant to be patriotic it's meant to point out the lack of appreciation and respect given to those who fought for this great country. i love america but i realize that we need to treat our heroes like they are heroes.

Yesss Sir! This one even tops the truly historic concert back in 1988. In dull, grey, communist East (!) Berlin. Most of the crowd there must have mistaken it for something ultra-patriotic. I heard that during reunion tour he did with the E Street Band, Springsteen rarely play this version of the song. He did the accoustic version, I'm guessing he finally wanted people who missed the point of the song like Ronald Reagan to hear the lyrics and finally get the point of the song.
