Thank you! I’m super happy with the carrots, just hope I can keep it up.
All looking awesome Lucia and just shows a bit of sunshine and warm weather it all ramps up. Corn the Americans say knee high but the 4th of July 😂 so your doing fab, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦
Thank you! It was lovely to come back too and see, as I do worry leaving it for so long. But I think finally having some sun has given the plot a real boost.🥰
It's great, my friend (new subscriber)
Thank you 🥰
Well done, great harvest 😊
Thank you 🥰
Re your question about your Parsnips ...
... according to the RHS Web site >
"The roots are ready to harvest from autumn onwards, although it's best to delay until after the first hard frost for the sweetest flavour. They're very hardy and can be left in the ground right through winter, to be dug up whenever needed, for a tasty home-grown treat"
... so you've got at least 3 more months before you need to contemplate taking a harvest.
In terms of making the harvest ... a "push down & twist" action before trying to lift the root out seems to work best.
Also, do be aware that the plant's sap can result in burns (phytophotodermatitis). The burns are a reaction between the plant's sap and your skin. The reaction is triggered by sunlight ...
... so best to wear gloves & long sleeves when harvesting them.
Thank you David. I had read about after the first frost, but then wasn’t sure as another plot holder made a comment to watch them as theirs all rotted in the ground last year. So I felt I needed to know what’s right,as they are doing so well.
@LuciasAllotmentJourney "Rotting in the ground" vs. "waiting for the 1st frost before to harrvesting" is a balance / decision you'll need to make later this year ... if we have a very wet end to the Autumn & start of Winter it may be a good idea to harvest some of the roots ... say the ones around the edge of the bed that they are in ... then cover the rest of them with cardboard & plastic to keep the rain off of them so that you can then harvest the remaining ones as you need them
I wear a big wide brimmed hat doing yard work so you go ahead and rock that hat lady ! Smart pple rock sun/yard hats hehe !
It’s got to be the best item I’ve ever invested when it comes to the sunny days down the plot ha
Is your plot near a road? Looks like black spot caused by pollution give a blast with hose and put some well rotted manure around the base avoiding the trunk and showing roots as always happy gardening Richardx
It is near a road, and doesn’t help I’m up near the main entrance gate! Thank you I will give it a go.
