Nice slow straight-key CW QSO with WO5S

  • CC available - This was a very pleasant straight-key CW QSO with WO5S on 12 meters, 10/15/2022. I heard him finish with another station and gave him a call. I started the QSO in sideswiper mode, but I often use it as a horizontal straight key for slower QSOs. The phone call was my XYL. She understands ;-). This video uses closed captioning. Try leaving it off and practicing head copy. Then listen again and see how you did!
I hope every ham gets to have a QSO like this. Sure, I love 20+ WPM. But there's something very relaxing about QRS contacts.

I'm not even half-way through this as I type this comment and I can honestly say that, as a CW beginner, I love the absolute textbook perfect example of Zero Speed you're displaying here. Your patience gives me hope. I would have to be writing down each dah and dit to try and translate it at the end of the transmission. I'm THAT much of a beginner.

First, I love your handle :-) Yes, writing at first is very common. I am at the three-year point in my CW journey (well, my second journey, since I learned it back in 1990 to get my license in the first place). I definitely had to transcribe the code at first, along with using written cue cards to help me remember what to send in the various event exchanges. Over time, however, my character recognition improved and I eventually adopted head copy. Believe it or not, it's easier to head copy faster CW than slow code. Keep at it, my friend. I hope to hear you on the bands!

That phone sounded like it was Alexander Graham Bell's first phone. It sounded so archaic. LOL!!

I am glad you showed side keying as a straight key QSO option, Cootie and bug keying is great for those who can get it down, but some hams have trouble learning it and side keying is also a great alternative to standard up and down straight keying I have used it for years for near fatigue free straight keying, and with practice you can hit 20 wpm easy, It is one of my favorite ways to key, You can use any key , bug, paddle, or actual Cootie key and even a standard straight key if you angle the latter sideways, , You can also use many of the small portable keys popular in the field for POTA and SOTA operations, I love my Navy Flameproof key and hold it with my left hand at an angle and key with right hand, , key is off the desk The CW Morse Inc 3D printed portable keys are also super, even smaller and lighter so using the hold off the desk technique is even better and especially if using one of their Iambic or single lever paddles as even electronic keying becomes so effortless and you can even sit back in a chair and hold those keys in any configuration that makes you comfortable, Thanks for a great video 73 J

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, I prefer side-keying for my straight-key contacts. It doesn't stress my wrist at all. I have tried several keys for this, and my bug is suitable in a pinch. But the softer feel of the cootie is very comfortable.

Time to get my side swiper paddle out.
I’ve given up on the Vibroplex Lightning. That’s insanely quick the Hi Mound bug gets down to 17WPM. I can just cope with that

Don't give up on the bug! I added weights to mine to tame the dits. A lot of guys use brass framing squares from the home improvement store. I just achieved the SKCC triple key award and I encourage everyone to use straight keys, cooties, and bugs. I guess paddles and iambic keyers are okay too ;-)

@@learnhamradio I’ve never tried anything with an electronic keyer. I’ve only used the paddle as a cootie
Congratulations on the triple key award
Most of my recent operating has been mobile sending left handed with a straight key. I had a few QSOs on the weekend and one ended up on Peter Parker, VK3YE’s channel
Trouble is, operating mobile, I don’t log the calls. Logging is no longer required in Australia AFAIK
As for keyers, I have a Hi Mound straight key, single paddle and bug, and the bug slows down to 17WPMish. I can just cope.
I’ve got the old 1936 lightning in it’s box, and a much more recently built jewel movement single paddle sadly missing the badge with the serial number. Question is, did Vibroplex ever make a straight key?

@@MidlifeRenaissanceMan I know that Vibroplex currently makes straight keys. I'm curious if that's a new thing. I hope someone chimes in.

@@learnhamradio might check the SKCC groups board. See what’s there.
Just checked and they’re selling new ones for $180 freedom dollars, which, for Aussie koala roubles will be close to $300 by the time it gets shipped here.
That said, they look pretty sweet.
The key I use the most is a small BEC field key. I haven’t got the leg strap for it, but it’s the one I’m using in my mobile CW video I made.
