We must remember that Idolatry is usually not a stand alone sin, it's often associated with other crimes that warrant capital punishment.. Ex 32:6 "Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry",, the golden calf likely was coupled with sexual immorality and murder (killing those who opposed them) ..so too with most forms of gross idolatry, they practice their witchcraft with gross immorality, and murder, and human sacrifice, and abortion and the like. If their idolatry does not find them out, the fruit of their idolatry likely will.

The penalty of capital punishment, for most rational people, does indeed act as a deterrent to commit the crime.
Moreover, the stain of hatred on the human soul is akin to that of murder; and that is why we are commanded to love each other, and Hashem above all.
The increase of lawlessness led to the judgement, and death of all in the days of Noach.
And today, because lawlessness has increased, the love of many has grown cold.
Once again, the great and terrible day of the L-RD approaches, but Hashem will save for Himself the remnant that does not bend the knee to Baal.

G-d doesnt speak chinese. He is very clear on neverything. Hashem is not Jesus, he is quick to anger and punishes to 3rd or 4th generation. Breaking the shabbos requires death as well. I like it.
