    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    While out for a moonlight dip, young Chrissy (Susan Backlinie) is brutally attacked by the shark.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg's 1975 shark saga set the standard for the New Hollywood popcorn blockbuster while frightening millions of moviegoers out of the water. One early summer night on fictional Atlantic resort Amity Island, Chrissie decides to take a moonlight skinny dip while her friends party on the beach. Yanked suddenly below the ocean surface, she never returns. When pieces of her wash ashore, Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) suspects the worst, but Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), mindful of the lucrative tourist trade and the approaching July 4th holiday, refuses to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After the shark dines on a few more victims, the Mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the culprit. Satisfied with the shark they find, the greedy Mayor reopens the beaches, despite the warning from visiting ichthyologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) that the attacks were probably caused by a far more formidable Great White. One more fatality later, Brody and Hooper join forces with flinty old salt Quint (Robert Shaw), the only local fisherman willing to take on a Great White--especially since the price is right. The three ride off on Quint's boat "The Orca," soon coming face to teeth with the enemy.

    One of the most terrifying beginnings in movie history, and you don't even see the shark. Brilliant. Her being pulled under in mid-scream is horrifying.

      Yes, no question....brilliant, even though it was accidental in some ways. It was originally planned to show the shark in this scene, but because it wasn't working properly Spielberg had to improvise without the shark. It is still one of the most powerful and iconic scenes I can ever remember. It really gives one an idea of what an impact it must have made when Jaws was in it's original run.

    • @benoitpellet1657
      @benoitpellet1657 6 лет назад +49

      Yes, brilliant. It has everything - first you think this is just some kind of "cute" scene (boy chasing very willing girl, will they make out or not?) then suddenly you are aware that the shark is circling her and you have the suspense of "will it attack?", then the horror of realizing that it has, then that tiny moment where she is able to grab the buoy and you think that maybe, just maybe, she will survive albeit terribly wounded, then the descent into utter despair as you realize that she is done for, and then that incredible moment where right in the middle of the frenzy she is pulled under and suddenly everything goes silent, and even then a touch of wry humor as you focus on the boy, whose inebriated state has ironically probably saved him from certain death. What a swirl of different emotions all in that short 3 minutes!

      Well, I can picture that 25-foot, 3-ton great white shark rocketing out of the darkness at high speed, jaws wide open with its black emotionless eyes glinting. Its victim completely unaware of what's about to become of it; then it STRIKES!!!!!!

  • @hunterwilder9665
    @hunterwilder9665 3 года назад +220

    From Susan Backlinie’s Wikipedia article: “Contrary to rumor, Backlinie’s startled reaction and screams of anguish were not due to her being injured by the harness that yanked her back and forth in the water. However, she was attached to a line that was anchored to the ocean floor beneath her, and she was intentionally not warned when she would be first pulled underwater. This helped provoke a more genuine expression of surprise from her initially - but the remainder of her performance was her own as an actress”

    Something else I find scary: after Chrissie gets dragged underwater and eaten, the water goes calm and there's pure silence. It's almost as if nothing happened and Spielberg was a genius to allow a few seconds of time for us to feel that the innocence of water and everything in it has now suddenly become a massive threat. And the narrative time setting is symbolic. Taking place in the early hours of the morning, it also represented what appeared to be the beginning of the shark's rampage. There are so many other great things about this opening that makes it one of cinema's most iconic scenes of all time.

      She did that during the ADR session. The basically dumped water on her as she screamed then they took that recording and mapped it over the footage. Most audio you hear is recorded after filming. It’s a long repetitive process. Effective though. Right?

    Fun Fact: The actress playing Chrissie is actually wearing a harness that is attached to ropes that led to the shore. On the beach, to create the effect of the shark dragging her through the water, crew members ran with the ropes from one side of the beach to the other. So, it was basically a massive game of tug-of-war.
    Bonus Fun Fact: The first time the actress was pulled under the water, it was Spielberg pulling her down.

    She seemed kinda like the shy one in the group that no one really noticed it cared about. She ran into the water because she thought she might have fun with someone who paid attention to. The dark waters swallowed her up as she screamed for God to save her. She died out there all alone with no one to help or care. It was also like the scene was saying "not even God can help you"

    What makes this scene even more disturbing and none chilling is her sudden change of reaction...At 1:41 she’s confused and shaking but as soon as she’s pulled down and she comes back up at 1:43 she is screaming, probably because she saw exactly what we couldn’t see. Which was a Great White Shark tearing her in two. Followed by her screaming the words “it hurts”...Absolutely Horrifying.

    Benchley describes the ocean floor sweeping away deeper and deeper out to sea in the run up to Alex's death, and it didn't bear thinking about. It can be as much as 3 miles or more deep for endless thousands of miles.

    Because of this movie, I got so scared of sharks that I refused to swim in the ocean for 2 years and even made me think that if I went into the deep side of my pool at night, that Jaws would grab my legs and eat me! THIS MOVIE SCARRED ME

    What's unique is the audience knows it's a shark but the idea that she has no idea what it is. The absolute terror one would feel in that situation is unfathomable.

    This movie, JAWS, didn't mess around whatsoever in capturing your intense attention. From the very first scene, which was gut wrenching to say the least, it had you until the closing credits scrolled down the screen. This scene was devastating to the mind of a 16 year old like me at the time, but Quint's demise had me crying, squirming, and screaming in my seat. Shaw's SS Indianapolis monologue was totally UNFORGETTABLE, as was this entire movie. Never liked the sequels . . . never mess with the original of anything!!!

    Today, April 24, 2016. I saw Jaws (1975 Theatrical Version) at the Arclight Cinemas in Pasadena, California. An amazing masterpiece, I will never forget this day, the day I saw one of the greatest masterpieces of all time in a movie theatre just like in June 20, 1975.

    1:29 Genius orchestration.The way John Williams plays a messy mashed spread chord, a bit like sitting on a piano, but using the SAME instruments he just used to make the playful, mysterious, underwater music, shows us the party has suddenly and abruptly come to a halt.

    One of the very best movies made. So ironic that even Spielberg initially didn't think it would be a hit. When the filming ran seriously over budget, the studio considered shutting down the whole project.

      The reason why I did not get freaked out with this cause it’s not real.(duh lol)

      Those who didn't freak out from this movie, like me, is because it was filmed in 70s, and at that time, things couldn't be so scary and realistic. I would freak out if it was filmed 2020.
