I really enjoyed watching this video. The pattern in the billet is simply amazing. I think stopping at 128 layers was absolutely the right call. I hope your brother has learned to shave and that this razor works out great for him.
Follow up msg: I love the video style, I've been a subscriber of Alec Steel for years, and as his have got more talking and less actual making I love that your vid is more taciturn and functional, great job I look forward to binging your vids! 😁👍
Strait razors aren't usually tempered because they do nothing but cut hair which wont chip or break the blade, instead they are left hard so the hold their edge best as possible.
"This video is RACIST!" - says about 1 commentor per week. The voice at the beginning is my impression of "The Princess Bride" priest plus a little Elmer Fud thrown in and not an Asian accent. But so what if it had been. The video and name of the razor are meant to poke fun at old Kung Fu movies by way of specific material in the movie "Black Dynamite", a modern day classic that takes aim at Kung Fu movies and so-called "Blaxploitation" films. Do people freak out over "Kill Bill"'s whimsical prod at the genre or the hundreds (maybe thousands) of other mainstream movies, TV shows, comedy routines and other media that poke fun at these films? No. The 70's style Kung Fu movie is a rich and often hilarious phenomena that is parodied widely. In some cases those parodies can elevate the base material and astound, such as one of my all time favorite movies, "Kung Fu Hussle." So, let's all get a grip on ourselves. Surely we are not so frail, angry, ignorant or bored as to consider this video "racist."
Well that sucks. I’ve heard channels like demo ranch has had 3 or 4+ year old videos get demonetized because it broke the standards of the RUclips machine put out 2 years ago. I really like your videos and the knifes you make are really cool. You are really good at this sort of thing even if 50% get trashed. If it were me, 99.99999999999999999% would be trashed and only luck would survive. Thank you for having the world of forging seem easy.
Love your channel man, and sorry to hear RUclips is making it difficult for you. Wish I had more money to give as a 19year old college student. But your content is definitely inspiring one of my future hobbies
I have to try that! Great video. Love when the maker is honest about his skills and letting me know about the risky moments in a project just like this. Thanks, and keep it up!
Forging pattern steel you mean. Damascus is a four part process. Ore, Blumes, Crucible steel and then the forge work. Folded, twisted pattern steel does not have the same strength, flexibility or hold an edge as real Wootz Damascus. Just Clarifying here... Although, I like the Handle...
This was possibly the sexiest damascus knife or razor I have ever seen. Well done on the subtle pattern, I hate nothing more than a damascus overworked to the point of muddiness.
You know, i have been trying to learn smithing for a while now. I have loved all things medievial since i was a child. Now i have almost everything i could need, but i still am finding myself having trouble forging. I think its a case of taking the first step, i dont know. I dont have a forge, but i have everything i think i need to make something that could work as a forge. I bounced back and forth between propane and charcoal. I bought a propane weedburner that i was going to use, but was a bit hesitant of it, so now its back to charcoal again. I dont know, i really want to get it started, maybe im procrastinating a bit as well. But videos like this really make me want to go out and forge. So, hopefully soon i will be working some hot iron.
Helpful tips: see the gaps you are leaving in between the steel when you weld the steel together before the forge weld? That can let scale build up in between the steel and that'll cause delaminations. Clamp the steel together in a vise when arc welding or mig welding to minimize that gap.
Ok so, your vid was spat out of RUclips Algorithmia onto my feed, and that initial voiceover...yeah I laughed, actually laughed and made noise, not just the internal nose snort and thought of "yeah that was entertaining" but an actual laugh! You have a new sub dude!
I taught myself to straight razor shave. every time after respecting the razor the first time, when i was like, yeah i can bang out a straight razor shave real fast.... hamburger face. everytime.
i have a really good idea for an upcoming project of yours. If you add pure nickel sheets to damascus, and after the etching you heat anodize the blade you will get a black/white/blue pattern. the nickel is resistant to the etching and heat anodizing, the other 2 steels are not
Was not a total fan of the handle at first glance but the result is breathtaking. Everything is perfect and that gives the razor a unique personnality. I would definitely cherish that kind of blade for décades. The final color of the whole razor is exceptionnal. Such a deep grey gives it boldness and power, all the more with the contrast the damascus offers. You never fail to surprise me!
a little hint. for face shaving you need a very high layer count of soft/hard or use 2 different hard elements. also a tight twist also provides the best microscopic edge for fine shaving. the act of twisting can also catvh any bad welds if you do it at welding heat. you can tell its slow speed by watching the contact wheel
Love the videos green beetle keep them up!!!! beautiful razor. I also just became a patron I’m glad I can help you do something you love and I can keep watching. I can’t wait till you make another knife that you will be selling on eBay I would love to own one.
You may have done a video about this before, but, I don’t know. Would you ever make a comprehensive video breakdown of how you sharpen your blades what you use and how you like to use it?
This is stone sharpened on a hodgepodge set of norton india stones plus 2 japanese water stones then stropped on leather. I have a wicked edge that I use at times and a worksharp for convex edges.
When I saw you were making a razor I was really excited !! I still use a straight razor and planning on trying to make one with about a two inch cutting edge . think the old ones where just too long . Great video ! Thanks !
I've been using straight razors for about fifteen years now. You should check out the Japanese style ones called kamisori. They're one piece, non folding with an asymmetric grind. Really interesting.
Lay-person here, would it be a bad idea to put flux between the steel before forge welding? Or perhaps "build" the layers as you go by forge welding each layer one by one? I realize this would fatigue the initial pieces of steel that you would "build" on. Thanks!
Flux between layers impedes steels ability to forge weld without inclusions is the steel. That’s why you want the pieces to be tight before you weld the block, and apply flux as forging. Adding each layer sounds good, but as scale builds you end up with less material, and harder to get clean fusion between pieces. Fatigue is one way to put it, stress fractures during heat treat is what would happen.
FYI if you're using a belt with an abrasive on it then its called sanding, if you're using a solid wheel that's made of abrasive then its called grinding.....
So I use a straight razor routinely. Even though I haven't seen if your brother could shave with this one or not I'd be willing to bet it wasn't the best. I used to go to 6k on Japanese water stones and then strop, but 8k and higher really does make a difference. I'd recommend giving that a whirl before forging another one if this one didn't turn out to be as smooth of a shaver as you'd hoped.
If you want a more dramatic ladder pattern next time you need to cut the grooves in or forge them in and then grind the billet flat to expose the different layers.
Old Hickory Forge if you cut the grooves in then grinded it flat you would end up with almost no pattern in my mind. You'd have to either forge them in and grind them off, or grind the grooves and then forge it flat. If you ground them in then ground them out you haven't stretched the layers at all and that's what causes ladder pattern.
You need to take the edge to a higher level stone in order for your brother to get a good shave with it. I hone mine to 12k with synthetic stones, then finish with a Japanese natural stone and progressively higher grit slurry. I usually go to the equivalent of 30k before stropping on cloth and leather. Geometry does play a role, but mainly In the role of "ease of honing" the most important thing is the initial bevel that you create. I use a shapton professional 1k. If the bevel isn't properly set, nothing will shave well. I guarantee that razor will shave like a light saber as long as the bevel is right, and the edge is honed to the right level. Beautiful blade beetle.
Very few people know what a good Uchigumori stone can do. I've even had people tell me sandpaper is as good at showing a hamon. People are caught up in the fast and easy ways, ie. acid baths, machines, and abrasives. Some of this is simply the fact that the stones are expensive and unless you know about someone like Namikawa Shoten, then they are still expensive to most hobbiests. My Migakibo are tungsten carbide and cost me $500 alone. Just a decent stone costs that much.
he's going to cut his face up again. You need to do a san mai with a nice mono steel core if you want to do a pattern weld razor. I have never been able to get damascus to give a nice smooth shave.
Beautiful razor. I hope your brother doesn't add to any scars he collected from previous versions. I love the twisted handle sections, they should aid in the grip of the handle.
Awesome work, as usual. For your brother's sake, I hope you can get some higher grit stones. I wet shave and you need to get to at least 8k, if not higher, for a comfortable shave, and then strop on hanging leather gently. Sharpening is a rabbit hole of its own. Anyway, I'm totally impressed with your fire welding. I haven't had much success with that yet, so it's nice to see it work!
I still shave with a straight edge it's a lost art nowadays. If you know what your doing it's just as quick and plenty cheaper than store bought, after initial purchase that is considering a good razor will run you at least 50 dollars. Not one of those safety razor insert things either cheaters. Looks great hope it works just as well.
Hey I am new to pattern-welding/modern-damascus, do you know if a 3x1.6x.6 inch billet would be enough for a kitchen knife? Great jobs on the videos btw, each new one has higher quality than the last, you're getting up there in the knife world!
Hi there, that's a nice razor. Pretty good to watch and learn. How long did it take you to make. And why didn't you fold it for more layers. Thanks, you rock
Beetle, you are just about the only blacksmithing channel that can make me laugh
😅😅😅u
Every time I think, "Man, It is about time Green Beetle put out a new video" you put out a new video right on time. Good job.
you should def thing that more often, then... :P
I really enjoyed watching this video. The pattern in the billet is simply amazing. I think stopping at 128 layers was absolutely the right call. I hope your brother has learned to shave and that this razor works out great for him.
I know nothing about metal and blacksmithing but for some reason your channel makes me so interested about it.
That intro though I mean nice vid but I cant stop laughing and rewatching that intro, this was a true masterpiece.
lol thanks bro for the super sketch razor.. even though it cuts the shit out of my face I still must use it, for brotherly love it was forged.
Throwing the razor in that piece of square stock to soak for the heat treat was pretty genius. I don’t think I’ve seen that done before

Categorize your videos as "Sience" you tube may stop demonitizeing them.
Man, first Cody's Lab and now you? This platform is killing all things interesting and informational.
That's sad. I love the content found on youtube and hate to see good channels like your own being demonetized. What is the motive behind this???
Green Beetle do you have a website that people can buy stuff on or request a knife for you to build for them?
Well that sucks. I’ve heard channels like demo ranch has had 3 or 4+ year old videos get demonetized because it broke the standards of the RUclips machine put out 2 years ago. I really enjoy the composure of your videos. They are always beautifully lit, and I like the jokes and narration/commentary. Keep up the good work!
Personally, I'm not a fan of the handle, but forging damascus without a power hammer, press or striker is still amazing! Great job.

Isn’t “flux” used for that?
@@bigboss4298 yes but it still helps

Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
Good work mate
Nice video! Did you put the razor in the oven as a way to normalize?
yes 390 degrees
Normalize? You mean temper? Normalize is heating to critical and letting air cool
Hi there, that's a nice razor. Pretty good to watch and learn. How long did it take you to make. And why didn't you fold it for more layers. Thanks, you rock
U have to cut not indent to get a ladder pattern because that's how u show all the layer's
NICE RAZOR SIR I LOVE IT
