I really, really wish this was from the book and not the movie. That movie was a goddamn disgrace. You can see it that way. The song is about a lover who is toxic, possessive and gaslights her. Sitting at the bottom of the swimming pool is a reference to Percy Jackson, the beginining of the movie when he is testing his abilities by holding his breath underwater. But in this case Halsey added the line afterwards: “ drowning out my thoughts.” Which means she was trying to clear her mind of intrusive thoughts. Beneath the water everything is quiet bc sound waves frequencies can;t travel well in water. Bottom of the swimming pool can also be trying to say she is “deep in her thoughts “ I’m not sure if she intended it that way but it’s a little pun made by me.
