- Jae Lee, chef and owner of Nowon in New York City’s East Village is doing Chef’s Night Out his own way: during the day and without booze. Jae’s alcohol-free journey has made major improvements to his lifestyle, but it hasn’t stopped any of his fun. He takes his friends through Chinatown for a scalp massage, visits a wine shop that sells only non-alcoholic drinks, and eats some of the best food lower Manhattan has to offer. Jae and his friends prove that the party doesn’t have to stop when you quit drinking.

Alcohol is prevalent in the industry. No one should judge you for drinking or not drinking. It’s your body. Drinking does help the social environment and definitely has benefits. Jae and I used to drink a lot and consciously decided to quit drinking for health and business reasons. We made better decisions when sober. Jae is just sharing his journey with this. Since most episodes revolve around drinking, we did a sober episode, which is why the NA part is magnified.

Totally agree! Though when it comes to personal diet, it starts to hit cultural and personal (even religious) beliefs. It’s not the message itself but the way it’s delivered that matters the most.

Very refreshing sober episode. I just quit drinking a year ago and this was very inspiring AND eye opening to see so many non alcohol wine alternatives, didn’t know they existed! GREAT episode, props! Not drinking has been the BEST choice I’ve made in my life too!!

As much as it’s entertaining to see a hungover chef struggle to describe the debauchery of the night before, this episode was awesome! I’m thankful that being sober (flex or fully) is more openly celebrated, it’s super important for kids to see adults making these conscious decisions.

I've done cleanses from foods and spirits like a year and half no alcohol and 3 years no red meat. 3 month, 6 month intervals and what not so this was 🔥
And whether or not you don't drink again for the rest of your life, do so moderately, or maybe the same AT LEAST you are aware of your health and really know about BALANCE. Great episode!

I'm a young professional cook, I'm in culinary school during the day and my friends and I run a restaurant at night. When we invited the chefs from school to the restaurant they made us drink so much and they told us "this is training for you cause when you move on to other restaurants the drinking will get worse". There rlly is a crap ton of alcohol in the industry.
he's gotta be the first chef in this series to go to a hair salon, and they walked around for a good bit too! much respect 🙌

Yo, this is one of the most unique episode yet. Felt like every chefs night out tailored their restaurant choices to some sort of drinking, but this episode went to get a head massage. 😂 cool group of people, great fashion sense, sick tatted sleeve!

When I was first dating my wife I wanted to 'wow' her with a great dinner. I spent 3 days prep and planning and 6 hrs making sure my roast was the way that I wanted it. I was so pleased with the results. She came over for dinner. I carved the roast and presented to her with pride.The very first thing out of her mouth was....."Yay!! Tator-Tots!!" lol (Just to let you know that was 12 yrs ago and she still likes me and tator-tots)

This was great! Love to see the mocktails etc. Lots of people don't drink b/c of religious reasons also so it's nice to see. I'd also would like to see a vegan Chef's night out. There's such variety in the vegan world these days and I'd love to see a spot like that! Thanks so much!

its difficult to stay away from booze when working in hospitality.
the long shifts , the stress and at times difficult people push us towards drugs and alcohol , but i guess there are restaurants with a more healthy and sustainable culture like this one . kudos to him

I liked this episode, very chill and some interesting food especially the non alcoholic bar. I never had a drinking problem so I can't relate to that part, but I enjoyed learning about it nonetheless. The only thing is that maybe the friends are a bit quiet, maybe a bit intimidating to hang out with a camera crew? (his guy friend is so cute also)

Nice to see people going sober and rejecting the boozy culture of restaurants. Next step is healthy eating. It’s shocking how many chefs, waiters, bartenders etc have horrible diets. Staff food is often an after thought, and anything but nutritious. People who work in restaurants know.

Would really like to see more African food represented on this channel and see more African chefs on the night out. This is nice to see as well and Jae Lee is clearly talented but this channel has almost become a de-facto Asian food channel. I'm sure NYC must have many African restaurants.

Hello guys. I'm from the Bay Area and I'm trying to bring sweetbreads into public awareness because, believe it or not, they're quite difficult to obtain here despite being such a culinary paradise otherwise. I called around, and turns out that meat factories around here literally throw them away to become meal and dog food, which is a crime if you ask me. I'm requesting, if you may, that you make a video on sweetbreads. The world needs to know about them.
I was so disappointed when he said no alcohol, chefs night out is great because its so fun to watch them when they get sauced by the time they get back to their restaurant.
it's crazy ppl on twitter are always talking about fried rice has to have a dark brown color & I see an Asian chef eat fried rice with hardly any color & talk about how great it is. 🙃
That is called young chow fried rice which is white color
Wack, fried rice can be dark or light depending on the type of seasoning in it so it's really just up to people's tastes. I've found darker fried rice typically is more salty because it's usually dark because of soy sauce, maybe those people just like salt?

Can somebody please explain the point of non-alcoholic beer to me? If you don't drink, that's certainly your prerogative, and more power to you. But if that's the case, why not just drink water or soda or something? I mean... shotgunning a non-alcoholic beer is kind of like snorting corn starch, is it not? They toss the cans on the ground like they just really powered through something. I don't get it. What's with the charade?
Its similar to the concept of decaf coffee (it's about the taste and not having the effects of caffeine) so it's meant to be beer tasting without the alcohol. Again I don't personally get it but to each their own 🤷♂️

The NA beer in that scene is somewhere around half the calories of a standard beer. Still tastes like beer, but no hangover. How about the comparison between Coke Zero and regular Coke?
As someone in recovery, I can't drink anymore but I still love the taste of beer. Yeah it's functionally flavored bread water but I really enjoy it. Plus there are social situations where people are drinking but you can't, like maybe you're driving, or have to work the next day. Have as many NA beers as you want!
