  • I recently switched from an Erin Condren Life Planner to a Dakota Personal Filofax. This video details why I chose the Filofax over the Life Planner and takes you on a tour of my calendar setup.

I love the idea of the weekly schedule in the credit card sheet. Genius, I'm totally copying that!!!!

Hi Sarah! My 1st 2 Dakotas are sand and my 3rd is black. The sand ones took only 3 days to separate while the black one took about a week. Don't stuff it too much...maybe it will last longer than mine. And keep saving your pennies...I did and I♥♥♥ my malden! :) Enjoy your Filofax!!

Hello! I use this $7.99 one from Target called the Swingline 10 Sheet Capacity 3 Hole Punch (I do the top three punches and then flip it over for the bottom 3 punches). Keep in mind that the holes are bigger than the standard Filofax holes, but it worked just fine for me! I'll also add the link to the description. Thanks for noticing it was missing.

I love the idea of the card holder using it as a daily task reminder. I am going to copy that same idea and incorporate it in my planner.

Love your set up. I have basically the same one and it works well for me with the calendar pages. I have been thinking about cutting down some Martha Stewart dividers I have and love that you did. Definitely a project for this week end. Really enjoyed your video. By the way check out The Life is Crafted website. Her pages are beautiful and very motivational. She also has videos.

Hi Kim! You totally should try sizing down your Martha Stewart dividers. Just be careful about where the tabs sit because I messed it up a little bit. Just make sure before you cut that they will lay one to the right of the one before it and so on. Thank you for the Life is Crafted suggestion - what a wonderful website! I actually emailed the makers of the Erin Condren Life Planner as well suggesting what I suggested in this video, and they told me they would bring it up at the next meeting!

I too migrated to filoFax after realizing EC limitations. I own an A5 Dakota which is why I watched your video. Not many people like the Dakota planner and I was excited to see that SOMEONE uses the Dakota planner. I also own a personal size Chameleon filoFax and Apex! I hope having a variety of planners to work with will keep me from future filoFax purchases!! Looking forward to your next FF vlog.

I can totally identify with what you said in this video!! Thanks for sharing. I went through the same exact issue when I bought my first Erin Condren last November! I love the colors and some features of EC but it is not practical for my needs. I actually made a video that stated the same issues that you pointed out but did not post it. Thanks for putting your views out there. You did a more cohesive and comprehensive version than I did- LMAO!!

Hi Sarah, I was wondering about your Dakota. I have 3 (yes..3!) of them and they all did the same thing to me. The leather on the closure separated and got really bad. Filofax was great about it and eventually gave me my money back. Then I got a personal sized Malden :) No issues with that, but I was wondering if yours is still intact. FYI, the Dakota is made of real leather but it's bonded which means its basically scraps of leather glued (bonded) together to look like 1 big piece of leather.

Hi there, not sure if you found a pencil case by now but I have a suggestion. At Big Lots I have seen a plastic rectangular box with a fold over snap top lid and an insert to be able to slide the contents out. It is usually in their stationary supply section. If you need pictures or more info I would be happy to help.

    Hi DagoChick71,
I have only had my Dakota for a little over a week, so I really cannot comment on the quality. It definitely makes sense that since it's bonded leather that it wears over time. The same happens with bonded leather sofas, couches, etc. I'm saving up for a nicer one down the road, so I'm happy I just paid $24 for this one.

I think better than hoping Erin Condren management sees your video (out of the millions of planner youtube videos), best to go to their website and email their customer service dept. with a link to this video, along with your suggestion to make their pages fit Filofaxes. I think it's a great concept. :-)

I use a small, flat, clear makeup case actually for my pens and even my small stickers! Bought at Walmart for $1.97? Works great and I can see everything I have in it! Brand was the off brand La Moda? Something like that. Pouch size is flat, slightly smaller than a personal size Filofax.

    Hello GroooviChick!
Thank you! I keep the entire 2013 month on two pages, the entire 2013 week on two pages, about three months of the 2013 one day per page, and 2013 and 2014 horizontal year calendars. I still could fit more, but I don't want it to be too bulky.

    Hello Calisongbird,
I actually did email them as well a couple days ago explaining and I linked to the videos. They liked the idea and said they will bring it up at their next meeting. I agree - the more people who write to them, the better! Thank you!

I just did it - I emailed them the link to both Part 1 and Part 2 of your videos, along with your suggestion.
I think anyone who agrees w/ your suggestion should do the same, because the more requests they get, the more likely they are to do it.

Thank you so much for posting. So helpful! Was wondering if you have ever used the woman's success planner? I am torn between getting a filofax or using the woman's success planner. Love how you organize too!

I totally love your set up (I watched your second vid too) and am now wondering if my A5 is an overkill!
How any months, weeks and days are you able to keep in your filofax for your various calendar sections?

Great video. I appreciate your comparison to Erin Condren because every once in a while I wonder if the grass is greener outside Filofax. :) I also like your idea of keeping the weekly tasks stashed in the credit card holders. That's something I've been struggling with and I like your idea.

You might like the Flavia line of inserts from day timer or was it day runner. They are cute and decorated and few quotes. Or you can just get plain stuff and decorate with wasih tape, stickers and whatnot.

I've seen a few people uncoil the Erin Condren planner and insert it into the A5 Filofax. Seems to work fine BUT I do agree with you that there should be an option to buy the planner without the binding to fit into various organizers whether it be Filofax or a different brand. I think more people are using ring bound planners now more so than coiled cuz you can insert things in and take things out.

Hey, Sarah. I came across your video while doing some planner research. ;). I love my EC and agree with some of your thoughts on its being a little rigid with the daily format. Love your business card schedule idea! So smart!
I did want to comment on your pen case dilemma - I carry a bunch of pens, sharpie pens, white out, post its... all sorts of wonderful organizational pen/stationary stuff with me everyday. I carry it all in my Stella & Dot "Pouf." Disclaimer - Yes, I am a Stylist for S&D and sell them - but even aside from that, they are so fantastic. They carry a lot, are wipe-able, water resistant, durable, and come in great, fun designs and patterns. They aren't a hard shell, but I like that they are flexible and can basically scrunch down in my bag. I have a few of them - use one for pens, post-its, chargers for my tech devices, I use another to carry snacks for my son, and I use another to carry make up, lotion, etc. I carry my EC planner (which, yes, is a little on the larger side) in one of my Stella & Dot How Does She Do It tote bags. Hold a planner and so much more, but aren't huge and bulky. Anyways, yes, a little self promotion - but really just wanted to share how functional I find the Pouf and the bag. If you want to check them out: www.stelladot.com/tiffanysalisbury Thanks for this great video - it is always nice to see people who have planner/organization obsessions like I do. Haha! -

I had the same dislike regarding the Erin Condren planners, I didn't like the days were very narrow and went down the page. The main reason I didn't buy one. If they should change it buy letting one write across the page, I just might buy one.
