Hello. I just happen to have the older version you mentioned. It is less than two feet away from me as I type this. The turntable works the same way. I bought mine at a flea-market for two dollars. Seller had no idea what he had there. He didn't even know it had a turntable in it. Works very well, and looks near perfect. It has the best AM reception of most of the old radios I collect. And considering the size and quality of the speaker, it doesn't sound too bad. It is my main radio for when I want to actually listen to AM or FM. Plus I can play my old records without having to uncover my floor-model stereo.
@@BeatlesOasisFan they do, it is standard to have a big hole in the US. To be honest, I have never seen a small holed 45 until this channel and I’ve lived in the US my entire life. Maybe the new releases do, if there are any, but during its hay day that wasn’t a thing.
Tech archaeology at its finest! Yet another brilliantly presented glimpse at a forgotten consumer electronics gem. And, as always, thank you soooo much for these entertaining and enlightening videos.
Wow, that blew my mind when he popped out the record player. Was not expecting that. Even being a an of boomboxes and owning quite a few back in the day, I've never seen one of these. They just don't make stuff like they used to...sorry to beat that dead horse, but the cliche is always applicable. This is really the coolest channel for vintage audio fans. :)
I always thought Panasonic was one of those brands that's not necessarily flashy, but their stuff is quality and it's put together and ages very well. Seemingly more consistent than other well-known Japanese companies like Sony, JVC, or Toshiba. And this demo here shows that. Always one to look for at garage sales or Goodwill shops.
I just wanted to say as a techie and gadget freak. Your channel is a blessing! I love every single video you've painstakingly put together for us. Most of us who would dream to have the kind of collection you must have :). Thanks for making these videos.
I was very surprised at the hidden secret. I must admit that i've always felt older technology was "cute" but not that it matched what we have today. I have had my mind changed on this point. The hidden ability really surprised me and I really appreciate you showing it to us.
Your videos are one of the few on RUclips I actually look forward to seeing. I absolutely love how you delve into older technology and explain how it was used. This vid was no exception, until you opened up the record player, I assumed 'PH' was for a set of auxiliary input jacks to which you would connect a record player. Very nice find and demonstration!
If they made these today I would buy one the second it rolled off the factory line. By the way, you always make high quality videos, they're also very informative.
This absolutely remains my number one top YT channel. Truly outstanding, the next best thing to 'Tomorrow's World' back in the seventies, errr, if you know what I mean...! Techmoan should be on mainstream TV.
you are one of the nicest guys on youtube, so worthwhile watching and listening to your videos, thankyou for the passion and effort that goes into each one
0:30 and 7:16 How right you are Techmoan, I thoroughly enjoyed the look at your Panasonic Stow-away. Quite thorough as well, which is always welcome. Good day to you sir!
Thank you. You always come up with the great retro stuff. We had a Panasonic AM/FM radio that looked very similar when I was growing up and my mum had it playing all the time ... I am pretty sure she still has it.
As someone who loved hi-fi throughout his youth, all of these videos are fantastic nostalgia. Keep up the good work. If you ever come across a Sony Walkman WM-DD9, I'd love to see that
This is great! When I was a kid, I was given a similar radio made by Sharp. It was AM/FM and the record player was under a lid which flipped open in the back...you would turn the radio over, face down, the carrying handle folded down to provide support, as well as a pop-out leg on the bottom of the radio. It would play in stereo if you attached a secondary speaker or listened through stereo headphones, otherwise you had mono sound through it's solitary 3.5 inch speaker.
NATIONAL PANASONIC SG-149F had a cassette recorder in it as well. Back in the 80s, our neighbour had one of these and whenever he used to play the radio or a cassette, it was so loud that we could hear it playing at our place.
These vintage devices truly were designed in the best ways: to last and made of quality materials and also being made with the intention they would be repaired. Such a great time for consumer devices
Great video! I love classic Panasonic design. I recently bought a Panasonic RF-888. Just a radio with a single large speaker. It's heavy, solid and works great--and looks cool! It also has some interesting features not commonly found anymore--mic input with a fade control. Very fun to play with.
Fantastic video! This series should prove vastly entertaining. Panasonic kept on making portable record playing boomboxes throughout the 80s too, this is definitely the originator of those pieces, they switched to slide out mechs instead of fold-down ones. Those battery tubes were also included with most of the high end Sanyo boomboxes of the late 70s and early 80s, particularly the X920, Big Ben and M9998k. I thoroughly agree: they should've been standard issue with any portable that used 6 or more D batteries.
thank you for sharing this one. I especially enjoyed seeing it as I actually had a second hand one of those when i was young. I had no memory of the one I had or that such a device ever existed for at least 30 years until seeing this one here which brought back the memories clear as a bell. im sure it was one of these which was my very first radio and record player. as I recall mine no longer had those tubes for the batteries and as such either the door just could not hold them in well or perhaps had broken its catches so unless you taped the cover on well the batteries would often come bursting out. I have no idea what ever became of mine but i sure appreciate getting back those memories from so long ago. thank you again.
Just picked up one of these at a church yard sale this past weekend for 2 bucks. I didn't know it had the turntable on it. I just seen it was old and a Panasonic so I bought it. Wasn't working until I gave it a good cleaning and now the whole thing works great! You never know.
That's one neat device. I love the battery compartment the way the batteries get stored in a tube is genius. All companies should have done that idea. I would see this making a comeback.
I had one of these in my garage for 20 plus years. It got prematurely inherited. My daughter though it was cool and took it home. I was a talk radio listener, and it was all on AM at that time.
Dude! You do truly make the coolest videos with the coolest retro technology. (Oh, and the ending hit home too... getting drunk and buying stuff that I don't need on eBay.) Keep up the awesome videos! Cheers from Canada!
These were somewhat popular in the mid-sixties, small pocket transistor radios being the most popular for personal portable music, etc. I had a Magnavox unit and a friend had a G.E. So cool it was to be free of the phonograph at home, able to take your music with you. Good memories.
I've got this exact model! But mine's got grooves molded into the edge of the tuning knob. It's interesting how little details change during production! When I first got mine, the turntable didn't want to work because it'd been sitting for so long. I worked it by hand for a bit and it's been fine since. Nice find! I really enjoy your videos!
The only other time I saw one of these was at the beach in Long Island when I was a little kid in the late 60's, I totally forgot about it until just now! A little girl was having a birthday party at the beach and she had one of those older models with the top mounted knobs sitting on a picnic table playing 45's. Thought it was the coolest thing ever!
"SWING WAY" is a perfect name. The word SWING has many connotations, some of them sexy, and if you were that WAY back then that was the WAY to go. The "Swing Way" was among my family for over 20 years. Brings back memories.
Excellent video! Love watching your videos, particularly the vintage electronics. I have a "justified" bunch as well, including a Sanyo VZ-2000 that I am desperate to get back from the repairman. I'd love to add on of these Panasonics to the stash. This stuff is just fun to play with! Great work.
Always loved Panasonic over Sony which went brand-arrogant while Panasonic had always been great value for the price. Around 10% more features for 10% less cost. Now LG is going that pathway against Samsung. Good to know about that UK 45rpm record hole 👍 As always, you're awesome thechmoan!
My first You Tube comment goes to you. I've always been fascinated by audio recording/playback equipment as well as video and pretty much anything electronic. Your channel is great! I always give it a thumbs up and of course subscribe. The wire recorder was another I must say was really interesting too. Thanks
Great video. Never seen this design of transistor radio/ phono before. As with many items you've shown on your channel they are quite rare. A piece of tech history revealed.
Hello, TM. Thank you for so kindly pointing me to this video. Fascinating technology. I really like this design. As I am in the U.S. this is the model for me. I now leave to search ebay. All the best to you.
Another great video! I live in the Czech Republic (a neighbor of Germany) and our singles do have a big hole in the middle, so it's quite possible that it doesn't come from the US.
Wow I did not expect that tucked away turntable. A radio review would have been enough to please me. I agree a modern take on this design would be something special. Great video as always Matt. Your getting very good indeed as I know camera work is time consuming and not easy.
I highly approve of your new "series". It is one of the stated desires of my own channel. Except you do a much better job. I did once have the older version of this that you showed the ad for, but alas, no longer. The one I really need to do is my Sanyo briefcase battery portable with stereo speakers forming one side and a radio, turntable, cassette recorder AND an 8 track recorder in the bottom half. I love this sort of stuff !
Interesting piece of history. And this new "show and tell" video style seems to be a good idea. Interesting to see what other odd things you have there.
I remember that Radio/Record player, late 60s vintage I think, great for a cottage or camping, or the beach if you wanna tote along a bunch of records. Kinda unrealistic toting records around where ever you go. Great show N tell TM!
That Stowaway looks like a really nice radio/record player, it clearly has a lot of features, looks very sleek and well-designed for the time and being that I would like to get into buying records sometime, this player would be perfect for someone like me since my house is a bit cluttered and it doesn't have much room for any kind of huge turntable with speakers unless I get rid of some things. (however, this Panasonic Stowaway would really fit in quite nicely)

I swear to god, this guy comes up with the most obscure of HiFi equipment, just awesome :-)
does god swear's back to you?
@@cipndale That's a good one.
"Vinyl player if you wear a beard" Gave me a good chuckle
I laughed way harder than I should have I suppose. Love these videos!!
Yes, and now he has one (a beard, that is).
My god, I love translucent vinyl. I never knew about yankee 45s having bigger holes :o
How did u not know ..
