Wodemaya, the wall holds the first 100 years of names of the people who help to build Barbados. It is the wall in Golden Square Park. You should also visit the University of the West Indies ( UWI ), Cave Hill Campus, and see the building built in the motif of the Golden Stool, where there is the Usain Bolt track and field track in honor to him as a African Caribbean World Great.
Maya remember back then even if the Europeans heard the African names they would spell them phonetically thus Kofi when Anglicized became Cuffe, Cuffy, Cuffie,or Coffy because of accents and how it sounded to the ear. We are the one and same by now you truly know that Boy. lol 😢😮😅❤
True good that other people are noticing this , even the name Diallo (French) Jallow/Jaloh( English) and Djaló in Portuguese all have Fula origin, same with Kamara or Camará
Those are the names the slave master gave us, and knowing that most slaves that were brought to Barbados from Africa were brought here from England. So most names on the Freedom wall is English. Our ancestors were brought there kicking and screaming. May we never forget our history.
Hello Maya. Hope you Trudie and the crews are having a wonderful time in Barbados. I hope you get the opportunity to meet the Priminister. I hope she will grant you an interview for you channel. She is fabulous and so are you.🎉🎉🎉 Happy New Year 🎉🎉🎉
Woda Mayo please be advised that Barbados was the first transatlantic stop and refueling location where new slaves would depart vessels. In a word - most slaves were barbadian first in today's terms before ending up in respective islands
Some of those names on the wall can be found in Liberia, but the name OKIN is a Nigerian name. They took their original names and slavemasters imposed names on them. Those who refused to bear the slave names were the ones who kept their original names.
Two family names are engraved on each brick in the wall and some bricks are left blank to signify those who have lived on the island but whose names were not found. The wall is a heritage site.
Hey wodemaya... the government of Barbados visited Ghana in 2019 the year of return and that's where they got the concept of Ancestors naming on the wall from...there's a wall at the Ancestors Graveyard in Durbar Grounds Ghana .. 🇧🇧🇧🇴
😊 you have done better than some bajans living in Barbados . I mean visiting that place 😢 thank you for the exposure.

Cheese don bread, the slave master really did us in.

That’s correct. They anglicised our name as they were unable to pronounce our names correctly and could not careless at the same time.

It is every family surname in the county's history. It is to honour the contributions of all people who have made the country what it is.

That is not true. That wall was started before 2019 under the auspices of Billie Miller's ministry
Akasi is Awoin and Nzima’s nama
I saw “Yeadon”. Most likely “Yeadom”, another Ghanaian name.
Ostini is Ghanaian name wada haha
Then Wode Maya you have a lot of family in Grenada/ Carriacou such as: Cudjoe, Quamina, Quashie, Ackie, Cuffie and there are more I don't remember😊
Wode Maya , there is no need to always say , as you do “ in here “ . It is a bit grating . Just say “ here “ . “ Come here “ not “ come in here “ !!!
