    Love the cymbal set up. Can someone explain the use of the triggers for gates? FOH and monitors? What is being gated? Also, I just caught HSU in Orlando and that drum sound is HUGE for no triggers with tom, snare and BD samples. Bravo!

      The drums are being gated so that the individual mics essentially only turn on when the drums are hit, which will cut down on cymbal bleed and other ambient noise coming through when the drums aren't being played. Traditional audio gates would rely on the audio signal from the mics passing a certain threshold before opening the gates but there can be a lot of false triggers from other noise which will result in the gates being opened when you don't want them to. Then if you have the gates set too high to compensate, it can end up cutting out ghost notes or softer hits. Putting the physical trigger on the drum will be more reliable because it can sense the actual hits on the drums and tell the gates when to open. Hope this helps

      My guess is because he has a kid now so he doesn’t want to be out on the road all the time.

      There's a lot of stuff drummers forget in videos, in-ears, hardware, pedals, accessories, electronics and why, etc.... Some don't even know what they have which blows my mind!

    i will never understand why having a top end drum with as much damping...

    • @jackkovar7806
      @jackkovar7806 2 года назад +1

      I understnad exactly what you're saying. Think of it this way though, you're not just paying your kit and cymbals, you're actaully playing the room as well. So sometimes wide open drums are not the way to go. It took me a looong time to realize this. Sort of the same principle as muting the bass drum, just on a smaller scale.

    • @TheKiknplay
      @TheKiknplay 2 года назад

      @@jackkovar7806 hi! In fact in studio room you can't avoid damping to control. But in live situation with such Big spaces it's not as much important for me.

      @@TheKiknplay Hi end kits do sometimes warrant dampening. Tuning the drums to get that amazing sound can happen but sometimes it's too much for mics in a live setting getting weird frequencies in the PA. Some rooms can really mess up a great drum no matter how it's tuned. Some people just like dead drum sounds too.
