They had planted their banner, issuing their final challenge to the leader of the greenskins.
A challenge Avriol knew the beast would not ignore.
He had lost too many good men in this strike for this to fail now. They would cut off the head of the beast, and leave the enemy leaderless, or they would join their brothers in death.
No other option was acceptable.
Kelastis and he fought shoulder to shoulder now, guns blazing and their armour drenched in blood that was not their own.
When they went into battle, the Blades were a sight to behold, clad in their silver armour, with their pauldrons painted in the colour of the night sky and a bronze trim.
Now these colours where fading, as the battle left its mark on their armour as well. Decorations were destroyed, paint was either fading or scratched off by an enemy that failed to pierce their warplate.
It left them as a far more terrifying sight to behold, warriors clad in grey. The only colour that still marked them was the blood of their enemies and the red of the lenses of their helmets.
Still they fought, atop a mountain of the dead. It was a point of grimm satisfaction to the Lord-Captain that only thirty of the bodies in that mountain were their own.
But thirty was a lot to them, too many. The beast would have to show itself soon, or their thinning line would not hold.
As he thought that, a bestial warcry rose from the ranks of the orks, and the sea of green bodies parted to make way.
As Avriol's head turned to take measure of whatever new threat had arisen from the orks' ranks, his helmet lenses locked onto the target.
Their leader had finally shown himself, and his eyes came to rest on the Lord-Captain as well.
As they rose and measured each other up, all sound seemed to fade.
There was only the foe before them, and nothing else. Such was the purity of combat, the sanctity of the duel that even the orks stepped back to let the combatants meet.
With a roar, the beast charged forward, ready to kill anything that stood in its way, as several of the orks found out as they were too slow to step aside. They would never make that mistake again.
Avriol remained calm, awaiting the beast as it ran towards him. Not many of his brothers would have done that, or could even have done that. The rage burned hot in their veins, and it was hard to keep it under control.
But Avriol had trained himself over many centuries to do just that. He knew there was a time for rage, and now was not it. Not yet.
He just waited, as the beast stormed towards him, a smile slowly forming on his lips.
He would stand or fall by the strength of his arms and his skill with his weapons, that was all that mattered.
It had always been that way.
"I lost you."
"I will not lose our Kingdom too."
"I will win this for you, my love."
"You can rest now."
She was about to get up when he held her hand. "I will always stand beside you. I believe in you."
Tears come streaming down her face. And for the last time, their lips gently touched each other. "I will always love you."
"You're my everything." They stared at each other's eyes for the last time.
With a broken heart, she let the battlefield know of her wrath. For she has lost her everything. Nothing can stop her now.

Looking down at the people celebrating at the Kingdom from the balcony, she said to him, "Victory is ours my love."

Last Act: The reformed villain embraces the dying hero, distraught that the hero took a blow for him but grateful that someone at last showed him what it means to have someone care for him. "Stay with me. I am here for you. I won't let anything happen. I'll protect you....I'm sorry....." The hero smiles up at the villain while meekly saying "I was wrong to be afraid of you. You truly do have a heart of gold."

He would not stop, even when asked, demanded, pleaded, to stop. Until someone stopped him. As he lay dying She asked why he did such things. His reply was both shocking and revealing. He comitted acts that were difficult, yet necessary. Terrible, yet required. Dangerous, yet for the safety of all. But most importantly to protect her and the nation they held dear.
While the world would vilify him, she and the nation would honor him for the person he was, not the person he became.
