Thank you! Worked perfectly and way easier than many other videos on the topic. Took out the cap thing and 10 mins later everything worked. I also appreciate you telling us the socket size.
I literally paused your video, went to the patio, pulled off the back panel and did exactly what you showed to bypass the thermocouple. Five minutes later and my heater is working again! Thank you so much. I know that the thermocouple is there to make sure that when there’s no flame, there is no gas present. However, we only use this heater when we are sitting on the patio. I am sure we will know if the flame goes out! So I had no issues removing that thermocouple. It definitely helped that I had the same model heater that you are showing. Everything was where you said and it worked out beautifully. Thank you for your time in recording it. You just saved me a bunch.
Not all heroes were capes but you should...you sir are a national treasure did exactly what u did to the free ones neighbor was going to trow out 😂 thank u again easy and simple
Terrific advice--I have four patio heaters, all different models. Following your lead, I found and disabled the thermo-couplers on my Fire Sense and Uniflame heaters successfully. I suspect most patio heaters have similar internals so fixing the other two should follow the same procedure. What a great way to avoid throwing these guys into the landfill. Thank You!
I am not mechanical in the least and decided to give this a go.....so glad I did. Your simple explanations and specific step by step advice were perfect. Can't thank you enough (and thank you for specifying the 13mm ! I now have two working patio heaters again!
Thank you for posting this! My neighbor gifted me a used patio heater when they were moving. They admitted to me that it had not worked in a while but knew I was decently skilled at fixing things. I tried bypassing the tilt switch, and that did not get it. Came across your video and pulled the spring and cap off of the thermocouple and it now works flawlessly!
Another heater saved from a landfill! The company I work for threw one of these 3 foot tall heaters in the dumpster. I dusted it of and pulled it apart but couldn't get it lit. I modified the regulator like you explain and now it works great. I don't even need a space heater i just like to fix stuff and keep things out of the trash. Gonna pass this off to a friend.
Your fix worked perfectly! Was going to buy a new thermocouple and your video saved me the $10. Detailed instructions done to the wrench size. Thanks so much.
This was the best and most useful video I have watched! I just wish I had watched it sooner as it would have saved me a lot of grief and frustration! Our patio heater works great, better than before even! Thank you!
It was big trash day and I was this 👌🏽close to tossing my 1 year old tower that kept turning off. Felt so bad throwing away 150 or so dollars and you saved it. Thank you sir
At 5:20, you do not need to reinstall the thermocouple fitting back into the cap as it is no longer necessary. The electromagnet/solenoid cartridge will seal the back end of the valve when the cap is tightened (5:05). You can cut the thermocouple wires and remove the fitting if desired (or just tuck the wires and fitting off to the side).
Omg I’ve had this patio heater for years and it stopped working. I was about to throw it out and then I saw your video. Took under 5 min and boom it works!! Fantastic thank you!
It’s funny I think it’s the first time I said it and it’s my most watched vid lol. If I had the time to do it more I would but it’s absolutely a hobby. Glad the tip worked!
The video implies that the "Tilt Switch" is still active and hasn't been removed. However it, TOO, is disabled because it simply breaks the continuity that the thermocouple probe generates (heat and metals doing science things creating a low-voltage charge) to hold open the thermocouple valve with a tiny electro magnet. So know that this method will certainly allow your patio heater to work, but NO safety precautions are in play any longer. The gas will NOT SHUT OFF if the flame goes out or the tower tips over.
Came looking for this. Very disingenious remark he had about the tip-sensor. Followed the steps but tested the sensor before firing up. Gas did not stop flowing.
I feel like I was just fighting in a bag with my heater and I Dang near got a divorce until this video. Thank you for this it took less than 10 minutes and my heater is as good as new. Works perfect!
I found a tilt switch + thermocouple kit on Amazon for $10. Worth changing out. The tilt switch going bad is a common issue. It can be bypassed. The thermocouple senses if the pilot comes on. If it does, then it is safe to release gas on main flue. If you remove the thermocouple, the gas will flow regardless of whether heater lights up or not. What if you remove it, the heater is off, but your dog knocks it over in an enclosed patio. The gas might run, fill up the patio and house, and kaboom! Or... dog may die unable to get out. If the house goes kaboom and fire inspector determines the thermocouple was taken out of the heater,.... you may not be covered by insurance. Some things to consider. It might just be better to replace it, painful though it is. Fires happen. My house burned down. If it had been due to a $10 fix, I would have never forgiven myself.
Thanks for the vid. I did a similar hack on my heaters. But one safety point. When the solenoid plunger is disabled the tilt switch no longer will turn off the gas when the heater is tilted. That works by disabling the circuit from the TC in the through the solenoid so the plunger is not retracted. We have removed the plug so it no longer works at all.
Excellent point and something I didn’t know. When it comes to lighting if it doesn’t go in the first few clicks I shut it off and wait a minute for the gas to dissipate. Thanks!
Nice video. I have a question ❓ I have only used mine 1 time. The wind did turn it over a good while back. I've got the heater working but when I turn the heat up to high, the flame won't get strong enough to make the top part red and it's not heating up like it should. Would you have any suggestions? Thank you
Hey thanks for this, unfortunately on mine there was extra tiny piping that when you turn that center bolt, if you're not careful it snaps that metal tube, too small to solder. So I just dumped that one. Trying to see if there is a different way to bypass have 3 more that need to be done
If you have the right crowsfoot much better than pliers. If you don't know what a crowfoot is then pliers for sure. A metric crescent wrench will also work.
I have a question for the op. Upon removing thermal coupler I accidently removed the threaded tip (opposite side of spring) and what came out is connected to a line of copper My question is when removing, twisting etc did this line break or does it slip right in and threaded cap locks it in after tightening?
Gracias amigo , compre una estufa nueva y no la use por mas de 1 año , perdio la garantia y salio mala de fabrica ¡¡ , Gracias por tu ayuda saludos desde CHILE me ayudaste para celebrar el cumpleaños de mi esposa
Wow. I just put my heater out on curb for someone to take. Saw youth video and works perfect. Thanks. Just 1 question my cap that holds the thermal couple was rusted bad and broke. It holds a bit but just want to know if its important for for it to hold on tight.?
An older video I know, but I have one question from the vid.....WHY did you remove the thermocouple? What was the problem before you did that? My problem is the knob which regulates the heat....lo to high....makes absolutely no difference to the fllame or heat intensity.....any idea why? Thank for the video.
Fabulous! Haven't tried the fixes out yet but it makes a lot of sense and I'm sure my heater will magically worked after I fixed it! Would you mind sharing the link to the better you heater you have that sitting in the garage? 🙂
I did this today, thought I fixed my propane patio heater but now I have a giant flame going burning off a lot of gas and not how it usually works when it’s functional. Worried that I missed up my thermal coupler. Any tips?
I’ve needed to perform this quick fix on several heaters and fire tables no real safety issue as no gas grill is equipped with any of these gas shutoffs
Is it possible to to separate my heater into two sections to transport it in a truck bed. I didnt assemble my heater my husband did so I am not sure how many pieces it has. Any tips or help are greatly appreciated. Thanks 😁
Technically it’s 4 pieces. The bottom where the tank is held, the stack pipe, the heater element (screened in section), and the hood. Most hoods are simple wing nuts on the top, the heater elements only connection to the unit is 2-3 screws and the regulator hose that runs down the pipe. The pipe is also held onto the tank base by only a few screws. Don’t forget it comes in a smallish box so everything is a simple screw or bolt, no harm breaking it down just take a few pics and bag up the parts.
For me it was process of elimination. I had extra regulators from my grill and other heater that I knew worked so I swapped them out and tried it on my grill. Regulators are also a part known to fail so easy enough to check.
Hey 👋 Any idea Why my Heater is going thru propane Sooooo Fast?? (The Big Hampton bay 48000btu from Home Depot) Just bought it mid last wk, only used about 5 times; maybe 10-12 hrs total use on mostly low setting under four seasons patio; It’s Already gone thru 2 20 tanks!🤦♀️🤦♀️ (I know tanks were full bc I got them directly from Waring where my brother works & had his guys fill them)
Edit to add.. I’ve noticed ‘frost’ a few times on very bottom of tank on heater.. am I using too small of a tank to accommodate 48000btu..? Or do I just need to return this heater? I don’t know anything about gas/propane or these heaters .. All I know is my grill uses 20gal prp & has 4 big burners; we grill at least 3-4x a week & tank lasts almost a Month! & Nvr noticed ‘frost’.. Thanks in advance ~✌️💕☺️
From this and your reply it doesn’t sound entirely off. I can blast through a tank in 6-8 hours if I am on high. The trick here is these things don’t need to really be on full blast. I tend to keep mine at 1/2 to 3/4 most of the time. I may start off on high to just get it warmed up quick. I have 4 tanks at home 2 for the grill, 2 for the heater that I can rotate if needed. I also use a local place for fill up instead of the Blue Rhino stuff, those tanks are not topped off. The frost is normal, especially if it is damp or humid out.
Mine was broken to begin with, but it’s part of the diagnosis, by switching out a regulator you can confirm if it is functioning and providing a fuel flow.
@@Neighborly_Content The regulater on my nearly new unit needed a few taps to get it to let gas up the hose. The first thing I'd check if no gas is getting up the hose.
Ok so my issues is the 3/8 fuel line doesn't fit into the nozzle. The nozzle is small and from youe video it looks like there is an adapter to make it fit. What is it?
The button has an inset. So when you press to open the valve and it lights hold it there for a moment or two then twist the dial while letting it out and it will set into the adjustment for hi to lo flame.
Not an expert so pardon my question. What are you removing from the thermocouple prior to reinstall? A cap? After modification, (removal of the spring and cap) then reinstall, it will no longer shut off the gas flow if the flame goes out.
This does impact fuel flow. Removing the cap and spring from the couple bypasses the shutoff so if your flame goes out gas will still flow. You need to monitor and keep an open eye. Again we use our heater for short stints so I’m always aware of the tank level and fuel flow. Propane is heavier so it does sink but if your having a problem keeping a flame then you may have another issue related to the valve assembly itself which is replaceable.

Dude, great save. Thank you. I had three heaters that were shite. I ripped out all three regulators. No more pilot nonsense.

This worked!! Thanks so much for the video. I bought this heater at a yard sale and it never worked for over a year until I saw this video
Took less than 5min for this DIY. THANK YOU for the tip! My Hampton Bay heater works like a charm now.
Your fix worked perfectly! Was going to buy a new thermocouple and your video saved me the $10. Detailed instructions done to the wrench size. Thanks so much.
This was a huge help for me today. Fixed my glass tube heater that had the same issue. Thanks man! Back in business after a year of just sitting

Thank you, I just saved Thanksgiving dinner that was on a screened in porch at an Air Bnb 👍🏼👍🏼
I’ve been looking for this hack forever. Thank you!
Ours is working like a champ now, thanks!
So just the spring is what you removed. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for your help. The thermocouple has been a pain in the ass and never worked well with mine. I was glad to not have to deal with that any more.
Mine was slightly different, but with a screw driver and two wrenches I was able to do this in five minutes. Thank you!
Thanks buddy, now my heater works again! Awesome!
Superb job and very straightforward video. thank you so much!

I just picked up a near new table top heater and will try this as it isn't igniting.... probably why it was left at curbside
Thank you for saving me about $200 and planet earth some more junk!
Yo thanks bro. Quick fix. You are the man.
Thanks for posting this video. Very helpful.

Thank you. I did the same and just like magic it worked. 👍
Awesome fix. Thanks homie
That’s very interesting how to fixed
Thank, I'll try the bypasses. You used abSAE 11/16" & 3/4". Why not use a 1/2" socket. Also av5/16" will work better on the tube nuts. But good info.
