Ryan Adams angry message to Jim DeRogatis

  • The voice-mail response critic Jim DeRogatis got from Ryan Adams after Jims not-so-positive review of one of Adams shows. Using discography as video, but the audio is the point...
    Some quotes from the review:
"Note to Ryan Adams: Wish you were anywhere but here"
"Adams can release three CDs in a three-week span, but the fact remains that he still can't write one song as original or as heartfelt as anything by Jeff Tweedy."
"Absent an historical musical context or a functioning b.s. detector, it is possible to mistake Adams for being as talented and clever as he thinks he is. But then there are plenty of people who can't tell the difference between plastic flowers and real ones, until they bend over to take a whiff."
"The fans (who skewed younger than Adams) ate it all up, but you had to suspect that it was because they'd never seen the real Courtney, much less the Replacements or even Wilco."

This reminds me of the scene in BOOGIE NIGHTS where Dirk Diggler and Reed Rothchild are arguing with the owner of the recording studio who won't let them have the tapes of their brilliant music.

Okay, alright, now you’re talking above my head, alright. I don’t know this industry jargon, yp, mp, whatever, ok? All I know is that I cannot get a record contract, we cannot get a record contract unless I take these tapes, and granted the tapes themselves are your bu-, are your (sigh), you own them, ok? But the magic that is on the tapes. That fucking heart and soul that we put into those tapes, that is ours. And you don’t own that. Now I need to take that magic, and get it to, get it to the record company. Okay, and they’re waiting for us, we were supposed to be there a half hour ago. We look like assholes right now, man.

That's a good point. I met him at a bar called the Springwater in Nashville about 13-14 years ago. I wasn't a fan at the time (though I became one within the year following) but I knew Brad Pemberton who's company he was in when I walked into the bar. Brad asked me if I knew Ryan to which I said something like "oh, Ryan Adams - I've heard of you, sure. Please to meet ya" and his response was "oh look, Joe Strummers wanna be doppelgänger - fuck off" and frankly he should consider himself lucky I wasn't drunk lest he likely would have wound up on the floor. Maybe a year later, however, I head Rock and Roll in passing (not knowing it was him) and fell instantly in love with it and when I found out it was RA...I had no choice but to grit my teeth and accept it and I've grown to love everything he's done since. I just have to overlook that near incident in order to enjoy him. Which isn't fair but...whatever.

I am a fan of Ryan Adams. And I agree with all of his opinions here. That said - as an artist, you have to let criticism of almost any type get said about you, and not take it personally. That's sort of how it goes when you put yourself out there for mass consumption. You've got a room full of fans screaming "I love you" - and you're worried about one cynical critic's mean words? Ryan - laugh all the way to the bank instead, and keep rocking bro!

I listened to the message a couple times.... I don’t know Bryan Adams’s music... I rather enjoyed his use of the language and expression and somewhat creative use of expression and slight intonation very much like a creative person... I do hear a little boy in there that’s intimidated by the criticism and really is seeking his validation. I am rather interested (and happy) that the critic released the message for our consumption.... both of them should enjoy that we have had the opportunity to share in this exchange....
Human frailty and emotion is a complex issue... I think they both handled it well... expressed themselves and brought it full circle... like the good old days... nobody got shot and nobody died and nobody got sued. It’s all good!

Oh, I'm sorry. Did I overlook the fact that a rock star left a message on a music critic's private answering machine because he gave (B)ryan Adams a bad review? Was it more nuanced and subtle than that?
The "grown-up musicians" that I know -- although they aren't rockstars -- learn what they can from criticism, and move on.
The thing is, I enjoy Ryan Adams' records, and his shows. I don't enjoy his juvenile tirades against anyone who thinks he is less than stellar.

Fuck yeah! Ryan Adams ripped that grouchy old man a new one. Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but I really despise people who critisise others, and yet they themselves never contribute any thing to society. Jim derogatis should try to create something origional for once in his life, instead of critising the creative talent of others.

There are people in show business with incredible talent and people that are jealous of those people. Adams' talent speaks for itself.

    Come after him?
Lordy. Maybe he just don't like Ryan Adams. Shouldn't Ryan Adams just get over it? Isn't it his JOB to say Ryan Adams sucks if he thinks that Ryan Adams sucks?
Lord. Ryan Adams has serious delusions of persecution. And grandure.

Sounds like he's challenging DeRogatis. Who's petty here? He says he will keep coming back but tells DeRogatis not to.

I like Ryan & reviewers are often sad people anyway. The magic thing about art is that it doesn't have to be explained or have a fuckn reason. It can be an emotion or even spiritual thing. As soon as someone tries to cut it to pieces & try to explain it logically, give it some rules or control my perception of it I turn off. I was surprised at how long you can talk on those things :)

Not everything Ryan does is at the same genius level. But who else other than Neil Young can play such a varied number of styles album to album or even song to song and sound like it's the only style he's ever done? There's true genius in him and I love him because he does the music because it's within him and he's compelled to let it out. I don't think it's about fame or money with him at all. And of course he got mad about this review because it attacked his integrity.

They're called haters Ryan... They're EVERYWHERE! This is the kind of shit those dip-shits live on.
He is someone who most likely tried to be a musician and fucking failed. He's angry and jealous because more than likely Ryan Adams turned out exactly like he (Jim DeRogatis) wanted to be.

Can't be that thin skinned...love Ryan's music...but as a high school basketball coach (hardly in the same public eye as RA) I know this comes with the territory...let it ride,

Good for you, Ryan. I think that Ryan writes better songs than Courtney, The Replacements or "even Wilco." But because Ryan likes to have fun and not take himself completely seriously like that overrated "artiste", Jeff Tweedy, he gets slagged. Screw the critics. Screw Jeff Tweedy for that matter. And since when does "Courtney" even belong in the same conversation as Ryan Adams?

Ryan Adams a patchwork of Stones/Young/alt.country with no sound of his own (I'd rather listen to Bryan Adams)

Yeah, I was probably too harsh on Tweedy. He's a very good songwriter, but Wilco's rise to indi-god status is more to due to their being martyred by their label than pure talent. As to the charge that I don't know what I'm f-ing talking about, hey, I'm just a fan with an opinion and my opinion is that Wilco's overrated. Always liked Son Volt better, to be honest.
