At 4:42, it's amazing to see how the prim and proper captain loses his propriety for a brief moment at the sight of her leg.. and it takes him a full 10 seconds to recover.. And recover he does, and puts forward his thoughts before the moment so eloquently..the captain becomes more endearing, after this very subtle but impactful scene. Such fine acting...
I agree, and I thought his acting was particularly , such command of subtlty.. I don't see how he did not win best actor in France the year this was released while she won best actress (she deserved it, but so, indeed, did he).
You know, I like 'prim and proper,' I like the traditional masculine man, the traditional feminine woman. This girl is very feminine, but still with a brain and principled... Much, much has been lost.
midnightchannel absolutely, the old fashion romance is no longer exist in robotic modern technology has taken away from all of us, versus, these kinda life styles , you are so intuned w your soul, and live life fully, I love it how he is such a gentleman and courageous, not afraid of talking and looking at her by the fire, yet still so tactful to the presence of grandfather, and she acts so shy,,,, so eloquent & delicate romance 🦋💟💕
Truly nothing like Hollywood none sense , ,,,, European movies, French in particular , absolutely understand human emotions, feelings, interesting though still make stories and movies about romance, truly touches our thirsty souls, I have watched the clips several times and each time I go deeper in the feeling of each scene! Amazingly natural acting,,,, the two new movies I have watched recently, if I may recommend : land of the moon , Marion Cotillard and the Spanish French Actor ,,,, truly a master piece, the 2nd movie is a German : one minute silence,,,, they are different than this one, however, beautiful stories, strong actings!
He certainly does. Being American we think he might have been playing head games with her but he truly is smitten by her appeal of being strong and determined not to bend or weakened under his gaze except towards the end. By then he knew the love Jeanne had for Werner - it was pure like "Bach"s Prelude.
@iMm3nUrD3D "Good evening. (silence)The wind blows very hard tonight, and the sea is very agitated. It's nice here. You are so lucky to live near the sea. Me, what I like about the sea is its silence. I'm not talking about die Brandungen, the surf (says it in French)... I'm talking about what is hidden, what we should guess/figure out. The sea is silent, but one has to know how to listen to it. I'm very happy that I found here an elderly man with dignity and a young lady who is silent."
Thank you for providing the translation for those that don't know French. It is a lovely language. What a beautiful story which there were more like this one.
Could you fill in the French words that I miss? One ne parle pas de (I cannot catch this word ...and more.)
Look at her face it's full of love for the officer because he's carrying Pierre to his parent's. I must admit that kid is so frustrating and wonder how he survived the war?
I just watched this one of a kind movie. There are parts of it I do not understand. Were they leaving letters to each other on the table? At the end what does the pot of flowers on the window sill mean? I assume she went there to give a student piano lessons, not sure. This movie is a heart rending clincher that has a tough ending.
The letter was from a possible girlfriend or wife? We never find out. The flower pot is a signal for the French resistance. Jeanne joins the resistance at the end of the movie.

@@Skyblue-fw5rm Embarrassed but also quite affected by the sight. It took him about 5 seconds and 2 deep breaths to recover. With the DVD, it's more obvious. This movie is full of details impossible to see if you don't closely follow the actors' play or even the small details shown in the filming. For example, we understand that Jeanne is rather careless in that she doesn't bother often to pull her skirt down when she bikes: you can see at least twice her thighs above her stockings at the beginning of the movie. A bit tomboyish? Maybe. So when she sits rather awkwardly on her armchair, no doubt the thighs are showing up again, and from the vantage point where the captain is kneeling, when he turns his face towards her... better quickly fetch his fan and fainting salts!
@@silentsea2956 Well Amy, I was being a bit facetious: in the old times, when a lady was about to faint of emotion, she was always asking for a fan or her smelling salts in order to recover. So, I was making fun of poor Werner so affected by the sight of Jeanne's thighs.
