39:02 - in an interview with Feherty in 2018, Phil said he hit a lob shot on 10 on Saturday that he still thinks about to this day....I think this is the one. He was commenting on how spot on his short game was that week and that his stats were better than any other time in his career. He had just put a 64 degree wedge in the bag and got really good at it, I think that's what he used for this shot. I wish there was more replays of this shot.
I still wonder why Bones didn't smack Phil and push more that 3 wood or 3 iron would have been the better choice there. Or at least punch out for his 2nd to his favorite # and use his world class short game to go for up n down to save par! Also feel bad for Monty! Always wish he would have won a major on the under 50 tour! And finally 2012 video tomorrow!
I don't think Phil's decision to go with a driver was the wrong decision. Not with a one-shot lead. Frankly, as bad as he was driving the ball that day, I'm not sure he puts a 3-iron into the fairway. But with a one-shot lead, you have to be aggressive off the tee. The questionable decision was on the second shot, because had he laid up with the second shot, he likely would have wound up in a Monday playoff with Geoff Ogilvy, and from there, it's anyone's guess what would have happened.
@@cjs83172 Exactly. He played a bad shot and then followed it up with a stupid one. That was the problem. That's why they say you should "Take your medicine". Admitedly he was a bit unlucky to get a fried egg lie in the bunker but so was Ogilvy with the divot and his ball rolling back off the green. In the end: Punch out to 100 yrds or so, spin a wedge into the green and give yourself a chance for a par. If you don't make it, you still have the playoff.
@@totmarbz6830 And everyone in contention were coming up short on their approaches to 18 that day. Mickelson, Montgomerie, Ogilvy, and I believe Furyk all wound up short of the green with their approach shots, which was why I believe Mickelson was going to bogey 18 even if he had laid up. I just don't think Mickelson wanted to chance an 18-hole playoff, so he went for it and made a bad decision, and a bad decision usually costs more than a bad shot does.
Tiger clearly was still grieving over his father to even enter a tough tournament like this... Thank god it didnt ruin his season to captùre the last two majors.
JackAllstarTT Tiger said he found his game Sunday at the Western Open (What the pga corporate heads now call the BMW championship) at cog hill where he has won 4 times. He didn’t win there, but won his next 7 PGA Tour starts through early 2007, a streak that included 2 majors and 2 WGCs (also 2 international events, the British at Hoylake and the WGC-Amex near London)
I kept thinking the music during Phil's collapse sounded like The Lord Of The Rings soundtrack and then I heard the familiar parts from Return of The King which clinched it. Seems unfitting in a way to play music representing a moment of great triumph (the destruction of the Ring) during a moment of great collapse.
He wasn't hitting anything straight that day. He could have just as easily been in the rough even further back if he pulled fairway wood or an iron. The real mistake was on that second shot. Just inexplicable.
Remember it like yesterday. I said “what is he doing?!” Right as he pulled out driver on 18. I l must have said it again another 35 times until it was over

Been waiting for this one. Thanks for the upload!
Thank you USGA! Pls post all the annual films and the final rounds like the
Masters
One can wish.
They don't have anything to do with any other of the majors. Masters runs it self, PGA Champ by the PGA, and The Open by the R&A.
most exciting final round in US Open... amazing
51:59 My reaction on the 1st tee every round.

Phil temporarily was FLip Mickelson with that handsy swing.
35:33 someone is taking notes about an aussie
Why the annoying elevator music?

Good lord Phil has to be wearing 40+ in pants.
Massacre at wing foot II
I am ready to hear the world's best bitch and moan because they can't make 50 birdies in a tournament
Let's pull put the driver, the one club that I've been mishitting all day. I stopped being a Phil fan after this one.
