Honestly, this Kong is my favorite. The story isn't about natives kidnapping a pretty lady to sacrifice her to a giant gorilla. This time, Kong just protects the island along with most creatures and people within. Plus I like that he faces some original creatures and the fight scenes were cool too.
And I love how Jen rolled her eyes at the Palm Sunday joke
And if you think about it, the grenade suicide worked. It didn't kill the big one, but it did signal Kong
Natives kid napping a pretty girl? I view King Kong as white explorers killing the natives and taking something back to show it in America just to kill it
Actually Kong was already there, he was just getting the big boulder, no way kong ran that fast. Kong was close
The creatures aren't really that original. The Skull Crawlers are just redesigns of the pit monster from 1933. The octopus is taken from the 1962 King Kong vs Godzilla. Pterodactyl things that tore the guy apart are essentially the same as in King Kong 2005. The big spider was the most original, that was really creepy and cool to see. King Kong had needed a fun movie like this for a long time
Fun fact: The actor playing Chapman, the soldier who writes letters to his son, is Toby Kebbell. He also played Koba in the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy. He, along with Terry Notary, did the motion capture for Kong in this movie.
And Andy serkis who was Caesar did some stuff for Godzilla 2014
I love this fact. I knew it before.. I just love it
Yeah, Toby did the facial mo-cap for Kong, and some movement which they changed after Terry did his part, so basically Toby was looking at himself in that scene 🤣
Just watching Toby in another show at the moment 'Servant' which is pretty good, he is a good actor. As a Brit I'm learning more and more of our actors are putting on American accents, I hadn't realised half of them were Brits 😂 think Toby is also in a latter season of another show I'm currently watching 'For all Mankind' around the Nasa programme, he is doing well for himself. I've yet to see Planet of the Apes, I've seen the older films though.
And doctor doom
@@sachinaggarwal1996 We don't need to talk about that, haha.
"yesterday i was a crackpot"
" who are you"
"A Crackpot"😂😂😂
Fun fact about the skullcrawlers, the director based them off a lot of his love for video games and anime, most prominently Neon Genesis Evangelion, Pokémon, and Metal Gear. However, in the original 1933 King Kong, there's a scene where Kong is looking over a cliffside for a character hiding between rocks, and there's this two-legged iguana looking creature crawling up the cliff so it's crazy that basic design became the template for this movie's main villain monster
P
That post credit scene lives in my head till this day. My jaw dropped and turned into a big ass grin, hearing Godzilla's roar at the end and seeing the other classic monsters
I found it fascinating for Jackson's character to go all Capt. Ahab on Kong all out of wounded pride for America pulling out of Vietnam. Hubris of man
I adore how VIBRANT this movie is tbh. It's color grading is amazing
It looks too much like a video game
There's five Marvel actors in this movie. That's incredible.
I counted seven Marvel actors:
Samuel L Jackson
Brie Larson
Tom Hiddleston
John C Reilly
Eugene Cordero
Shea Whigham (Dooley in Agent Carter season one and George Stacy in Across the Spider-Verse)
Terry Notary (Cull Obsidian)
@@TheYoungDoctor Toby Kebbell as Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four 2015.
Sarah Halley Finn is the same casting director.
@@joshuacampbell7493but not MCU
@@deathmetal271he say marvel, not mcu.
Fun fact there is a comic origin story for this Kong and he was born during his parents death his father was fighting a bunch of skull crawlers while his mother was giving birth to him and then his father was killed so his mother hid him in a cave and put a rock infront of it to kinda hide him but there was enough space for Kong to look out and he saw his mother fight and die before his eyes so Kong is a survivor he is sad he also is a protective of humans he cares for them there was a clip of the new movie where Kong looks back and sees a bunch of people in a building screening instead of dodging the attack he stood his ground and tanked through it to avoid those people dying in the monster verse he is like a “human” insertion of sorts he also gives me major god of war kratos vibes
Sulley: Monsters exist.
God damn, such a simple visual gag, and it got me good!
Yea I'm enjoying the more playful edits lately 😂
I love how Kong rips out that one Skullcrawler's guts, much to the disgust of the human visitors.
Side note: It's hilarious to hear Samuel L. Jackson say "Bitch, please!!" 😁😆😂🤣
It’s funny af cause she says the generic “we are better than this” line cliche in every movie 😂
He even says it to Peter in Far From Home 😂
@@RevculterSame energy as hearing Keith David in Hazbin Hotel call someone a "fucked up little whiny bitch" lol
@@Revculter Oh my God, you're right. I forgot about that.
Samuel L Jackson’s character was a representation of war and obsession. He was so obsessed with finishing this battle with Kong that it ended up killing most of his men pointlessly, especially the grenade scene.
Can we talk about Holden’s Veggie Tales’ song call out? I mean who doesn’t want a water buffalo
Is it just me or is Jen the cutest when she’s trying to understand and place the different multiverse and movie universe of different franchises
I love that your wife is wearing a King Kong (1933) T-shirt, representing the OG classic. That is the original special effects blockbuster and created many of the movie techniques that were used for the next 80 years. Even Lucas said that you don't arrive at Star Wars without King Kong.
Apparently Kong also fights a giant spider, but it was deemed "too horrific" for audiences.
Great little editing tidbits appreciated. Kong with the "Get Over Here!"
The line delivery of “is that a monkey?” Is the best. Like Ramses.
I gotta say going forward Holden needs to have the drum sound effect every time is said😂. I didn't realize how much less screen time Kong had in this movie. But the brutality of the monsters never fails
Fun Fact: 3 actors from "Straight Outta Compton" are in the Monsterverse. The actors that play Dr. Dre and Eazy E are both in this movie and Ice Cube's son is in Godzilla King of the Monsters. Edit: I laughed at every whistle!
Fun fact: Toby Kebbell portrayed not only Chapman, but as well he portrayed Kong motion captured.
King Kong (1933) - Respect the OG
Son of Kong (1933) - Cash Grab, but Jen would probably fall in love with Baby Kong
Mighty Joe Young (1949) - I predict Jen would really love Joe in this family movie
The Disney remake of Mighty Joe Young is WILDLY underrated.
Mighty Joe Young was solid. AND my first Charlize Theron movie, she was SO cute in that, and Joe was cool.
The thing I loved about this film was the cinematography/camera angles they used. Some of the manical murica F yeah weapon prep and bomb dropping shots were superb, followed by a dark humor backfire. Perfectly personified by the guy strapping up to sacrifice himself, then getting yeeted by "the big one". 🤪🤪
25:25 I feel like "You'll see" will someday be Holden's final words...right before Jen utterly snaps.😂
Fun fact in this movie King Kong is 105 ft and is young and in the Godzilla vs Kong movie he is like 340 ft and is almost 100 years old and Godzilla is like 390ft
Where the heck did that slide whistle come from lol?!!! So many great jokes from the beginning. I absolutely love you two, and those eye rolls from Jen perfectly described my thoughts at the time of the jokes.
“I like it” “yeah looks good” I’m here for it.
I think that this is overall the most solid movie in the Monsterverse. It was made back when the films were still relatively grounded and serious, the human cast is pretty likeable, and I feel that we got the right amount of screen time with the monster with him showing up frequently but not so much to desensitize us.
But although it's the best imo it's only my second favorite, purely because of my bias for one other film in the series that's coming up.
Yea.. before GvK and GxK completely shattered the grounded aspect. 😂
@@TwistedReality13 Buddy ksi was the same movie that introduced the concept of the hollow earth, it too wasn't entirely grounded 😅. Let alone, most of the franchise isn't.
Fun fact:
We actually did get to see 2005 Kong fight 1998 Godzilla in the 80th annual academy awards opening!
Yes they did super-size kong but ayo it looked rad
23:47 I thought the same thing when he threw that chain bro thought he was scorpion 💀
I love this movie..so entertaining and just cool to watch at any time…also fun to show ppl who haven’t…BUT, the last scene of Marlow getting home to his wife and full grown son was such an amazing touch..almost wish we can see more of his life after his looooong experience in Skull Island…maybe even a series would be cool…
When Jen said she thought this movie would have a more serious tone than 2005 I laughed out loud. 😂
Hurry up and get Jen on the Punisher series! It's been out for 7 bloody years!
I would recommend watching the Monarch series after Godzilla vs Kong. it gives a little back story to Monarch and Bill Randa
Yeah they should definitely take a look at that show after.
Nah, its a waste if time, monarch is barely explored and the monster footage is scarce, most of that show is about family drama, a bad one.
This is probably my favorite Kong movie ever! The epic shots, Kong himself, the all-star cast, it's all fantastic!
On a s(l)ide note, Jen being so satisfied when Holden uses the slide whistle is hilarious!
The slide whistle is the greatest addition to this channel in quite a while
Funny that Jen would mention Lost and Jurassic Park. Much of the on location scenes were filmed at the same ranch in Hawaii (Kualoa Ranch). I was lucky enough to visit a few years ago and they still have quite a few of the bones that were practical for us to see and take photos with from the graveyard attack scene.
I haven't watched you guys in a while and it makes me happy to see the channel name was changed to Holden and Jen Hardman to make it feel more like both of your guys' channel. Cheers to you guys🥃
A Few Fun Fact!
. Kong: Skull Island originally started out as a follow-up to the Peter Jackson King Kong in 2005 simply called Skull Island, with Adam Wingard helming the project. However, legal disputes between Universal, Warner Bros., and the estate of Merian C. Cooper (the director of the original 1933 King Kong) lead WB obtaining the rights and shift the project to being in the same continuity as their 2014 Godzilla film. Interestingly, Adam Wingard would later direct both Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts actually wanted the Peter Jackson King Kong to appear in this movie, where it would've been killed in the beginning before the real Kong showed up. Legendary didn't like this idea.
. Godzilla was meant to have a more direct cameo in the film, but director Jordan Vogt-Roberts vetoed the idea immediately, feeling that a direct appearance of Godzilla would take away from Kong in the film.
The character John Goodman plays in this movie, Bill Randa, is also one of the lead characters in the Monarch-series. You should watch, it's actually very good! Oh, and it's getting a second season, just announced today.
8:53 Is that a Sly Whistle from SpongeBob? 😂
One thing i wish they did in kong skull island was have a much larger focus on john C reilley's character as he was the most interesting character and was unfortunately portrayed as the comedic side character. I feel giving him 20mins of the film to him and his struggles on the island. It would make for a better character journey for him and an overall better film in my opinion
He really was..
Hahaha Holden, so many good puns, the slide whistle, and shout out for the Water Buffalo song! Top tier content hehe.
As far as I remember, Loki and Carrol Danvers never had any interactions at all on screen. As of course in both Captain Marvel movies Loki is not around.. and during Avengers Infinity War (where "our" Loki died) she was not in there yet. And she hasn't interacted with the Loki from the Loki TV Show either.. so they're one of those interactions that never happened, but it's fun their actors interact here
When Treat Williams sadly passed, some folks were reminded of his monster classic "Deep Rising." I heard that it was supposed to be the beginning of this "monster verse" but that's unconfirmed.
The ending scene, where the true King was mentioned, level goosebumps!😂
The actor who played Chapman also did the motion capture for Kong.
The way he looks at Jen ready to say “he really had to put his foot down” has me dieing
Everyone of the Monsterverse films has someone from Marvel in them. There are seven in this one alone.
The slide whistle was such a nice touch 🤣
Holden was on his game this episode.
Kong was a juvenile here; that's why in the newest movie, he's much bigger (adulthood). So, it makes sense when fighting the adult Skull Crawler, he's struggling. I mean, adult Kong would have folded it easily since, as an adult, he's actually fighting other titans and has pretty much got it down pat at that point, actually breaking jaws and skulls. Like he's struggling with this main Skull Crawler, which is also a signature move of Kong - grabbing the head & jaw, trying to break them apart. He was still a strong juvenile, even though we haven't seen his parents. I believe he was bigger and much stronger because I believe this crawler is meant to have killed his parents. Now, with him in Hollow Earth, he's tapped into the power it produces too, which will definitely give him an advantage when it comes to combat.
if you ever go to Oahu, check out Kualoa Ranch. They have some props and locations from this Movie and others as well
LOL HOLDEN WITH THE SLIDE WHISTLE!
Nicely done with the Mortal Kombat reference at 23:47
I so love how your dogs were also watching the TV, especially your doggy sitting next to wife, I swear when Kong was pounding his chest, your dog was,..really starring at that, I don't know if he was a little scared, or what,..he just had this look on his face,..these movies have to have the human element, human and Kaiju worlds are intertwined,..Kong has come a long way, started all the way back to 1933, so, even with the Peter Jackson version, which was actually I guess a retelling of the 1933, but of course more updated special effects, better sound, it was quite the endeavor, even when he did it, you know people were like is it gonna be done with care, the original was still a revered iconic movie, and I'm so glad he did it, he did do it with quite meticulous care, as the director did with the 2014 Godzilla, these much revered movie icons, people, fans of DC, Marvel, because of comics, you know were critical, or ready to be critical of any live action movie version, when the first remake of Batman with Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, came out, even I was like wait a minute, cause I grew up with the series more than the comics, Adam West, Caesar Romero as joker, Frank Gorshin, riddler, Earth Kitt, Julie Newmar, cat woman,..so you know I was ready to bash it, had only seen, or knew of Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom,..comedy, you know, how's he gonna play this deeply dark troubled figure, Nicholson, well knew him from Cukoo's Nest, but still, as a homicidal maniac?(I know The Shinning, but that was a ghost possessed homicidal maniac😉)..Romero played it so well, so I think most of us were like you know totally holding judgment, and boy was I pleasantly pleased, someone called it a casting coup at the time, and indeed it was, I was so pleasantly pleased to see Jack Palance, just was mad about him, and loved that he was in it(Palance also got a little revival, playing villans again also in Tango and Cash, and in the comedy City Slickers with Billy Crystal),..so for us oldsters, these new reincarnations of Godzilla, Kong, Ghidorah, we are very glad, done with great care, artistic care, they've been brought back, the cgi has very much been improved on, but the spirit of them is being well done,..do keep going, welcome to the monsterverse, enjoy,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
Who is in this? Captain Marvel. Loki, Nick Fury. Dan Connor and Wreck It Ralph, that's who.
best line in the film... "is that a monkey?"
Said by one of the people who did the motion capture for Kong. 😅
I was just in the Pensacola area moving my dad there from MO and I didn't run into you. What the heck?!
The actor that plays Billy's dad (Kobbi Kebbell) did the mocap for Kong in this and Koba in the latest Planet of the Apes films.
Another MCU connection, Cole's actor, Shea Whigham, was in Agent Carter.
Holden's so proud of his slide whistle. lol.
You can literally tell when Sam Jackson's character goes nuts. That scene with Kong and the helicopters was nuts in the theater
It’s true that the noise maker after puns might get old, but I laughed each time in this video 😅
I personally think Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the best of the Monsterverse films. The designs, sounds and etc, it was all great. Only criticism of it is the humans; mainly Emma Russell portrayed by Vera Farmiga as I just feel her reasons are quite silly in the grand scheme of the film.
I haven’t seen this movie since watching monarch, it’s crazy seeing and hearing the stuff they talk about in this movie, and the names mentioned that are direct referenced or used in the show whether you watch it on the channel or not. You should definitely check it out.
There’s so many great actors in this movie.
I think Jen was going for an eye roll record over Holden cracking funny! 🤣 🙄 I love it!!
I lost it at that slide whistle. 😆😆😆😆
I hope that becomes permanent. 😅
I gotta get me one of those some day
Its interesting the connections behind the scenes as well. Toby kebbell partially playing kong in this movie, and played "Koba" in "Rise/Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" alongside Andy Serkis as Cesar...who also played King Kong in the Peter Jackson film in 2005.
Jen has some great Underrtaker moments in this :p lol
But I get it, when you bring your own sound effects... That's what happens lol
Bruh the slide-whistle! I'm dead!
Like the Pulp reference with his “tip-top” line
I love how sneaky these giant monsters are sometimes.
Strongly recommend watch monarch show now especially with you and Jen seen and rewatch GvK. The show is gonna reveal some things from the films on how said thing happened plus expand the universe lore and hints what may happen in future movies.
The boneyard is all Styrofoam bones. It is still located in Hawaii at kualoa ranch. They film a lot of movies there including Jurassic Park
I love this movie. I think it is amazing. I love the scene where Mason touches Kong's face. I thought that was a beautiful moment. One thing I loved that the director did is wanting a real camera for Brie Larson's character, not a prop camera. She was actually taking the pictures in the scenes where she uses the camera and developed the pictures herself. I thought that was pretty cool. Kong was absolutely amazing in this film. Thomas Hiddleston and John Goodman were great. And what can I say about Samuel L. Jackson? I did not like his character, but he played the part well. And the Veteran in me always tears up when Marlowe gets home and sees his wife and son. That was beautiful.
This is the point at which you can jump over to the Monarch TV series. It can fill in a number of things for you all.
I always just imagine that this Kong is the grandchild of the other versions of king Kong so his story is different grandpa Kong went to New York
"THESE GUYS GOT SOME GUTS" xDDDDD
A Teen Gorilla VS Juvenile young skullcrawler was fine, but A Teen Gorilla VS a fullygrown large two legged lizzard is crazy
I Love this film. Kong has always been a favorite of mine in all iterations, but this one he was just Bad ass.
Curious, have you and Jen watched The Maze Runner series? If not, I highly recommend you watch them.
True but the books are better. Especially them going a different path in the 2nd film. In the books you understand why Teresa did but in the movie it seemed like she was on the wrong side
The 1933, 1976 and 2005 versions of Kong are vastly different to the Toho version of Kong who was upscaled in size to go against Godzilla. The Monsterverse version of Kong is basically the Toho version and has little to do with the RKO, Paramount and Jacksons Kong.
We need more slide whistle!!
YESS, I'm ecstatic you two both got to experience Kong Skull Island. This movie IMO is the best movie of the Monsterverse, everything from its tone, characters, setting, plot and creatures made it an absolute favourite of mine.
lol Holden having the same thing SpongeBob had in the episode where Squidward got it stuck in his throat lol if you seen that episode you’ll know why I’m laughing
love yall movie/show reactions videos i watch all them by the way and i love it when jen be saying your full name every time you be saying adult jokes please react to the ice age movies i think that you and jen especially jen will love the movie franchise🙏
Great veggietales reference at 10:32
I really loved Peter Jackson's Kong and it was an incredibly well made film, but this is probably my favourite Kong movie. It's a monster movie and definitely the most 'war film' of the universe, with the gore to back it up haha
In this movie which takes place in 1973, Kong is the equivalent of a teenager. In Godzilla VS Kong which takes place in 2024, he grew into old man Kong and almost the same height as Godzilla.
Scarlett Witch, Quick Silver, Nick Fury, Loki, Captain Marvel, Corpsman Dey, Eleanor Bishop, Hood, Maya Hansen, Phastos, Ego, John Walker, Casey, Cull Obsidian. Probably missing some other MCU characters that are apart of this universe (Corey Hawkins was in Iron Man 3)
11:35 name for the spider is mother long legs. “Why not call it mommy long legs like daddy long legs?” If ask, well it’s pretty obvious why.
Holden and Jen....you both should realize that all of the Godzilla and Kong Monsterverse films are mainly about the "Human Organization Monarch" which is why the Series "Monarch" is directly Tied to 2014 Godzilla and Kong Skull Island....Which is why you must watch Monarch after Godzilla Vs Kong so that way you both can understand why there is More Human Coverage Element in the films.... but when you both finally do watch Monarch everything from the 3 film will have more weight and standing where the full picture of it all will become much clearer.
WE NEED MOREEE
Seeing Tom Hiddleston in this movie is very similar vibes to seeing Adrian Brody in Predators 😅
Whenever I think about Adrian Brody.. Splice comes to mind 😂😂
Palm Sunday joke was **chefs kiss**
That slide whistle needs to GO!
Seen most Kong movies and this is top three, 1933 and 1975 versions being the other two, also I saw King Kong Escapes 1967 at the theater, Kong fought Robot Kong, epic movie especially for grade school me and my friends! Thanks
18:51 lil buster got startled 😂
The slide whistle is hilarious 😂
lol, the eye roll at 25:27
