Arrau could always produce a fulsome sonority without banging or crude hitting at the keyboard. This Liszt Concerto performance is simply sublime for its depth of musicality and supreme control.
I don't know how to thank you for publishing this treasure! When Arrau played this Liszt second piano concert in Rio, in 1971, it was a revelation for everyone who supposed to know this work. I regretted for the rest of my life that I didn't record it. Now, thank to you, I am finally consoled and free of the weight of repentment. I remember that it was noted that in the last ritornello of the melodic theme, near the end of the concert, Arrau played it in an unusual più mosso tempo, that surprised the public. Afterwards it was known that in the original Liszt score it was marked: più mosso. The Arrau fidelity to the original scores of the composers was once more demonstrated.
