So I just watched Ant-Man and it was SO good, the cast and comedy were A1 and it seriously made the movie super enjoyable. I didn't know what to expect from a superhero named Ant-Man but it wasn't that and I was sooo pleasantly surprised. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did, thank you!!😁😁

What I love about this movie is the step dad is actually a good guy but people are so judgemental everyone just assumes he's bad cause of the stereotype. This movie done a great good with showing family dynamics
This, he's not hard on Scott because he's a cop and Scott is an ex con. He's hard on Scott because he loves Cassie as a father lives his daughter. He knows that Scott is unreliable and Cassie is young and not prepared for the heartbreak that will come if Scott can't get his life together. Everything he does is to protect Cassie the entire movie.
It's a stereotype for statistical reasons, not prejudicial ones.
This! It's so nice to get the occational healthy patchwork family. Sure they still have their issues but in the end they all love the kid and the kid loves them which is more important than who done what wrong.

Of course it's a prejudice. It's the basic Disney trope that only biological parents can truly love their kids (and *only* their kids), which is really sick when you think about it. But Disney was a white-supremacist union-buster, so, y'know, you get what you pay for.
@@Drakoni23 "Who done what wrong" is still very important. Scott caused his family a huge amount of pain by putting his need for kicks over their welfare. What is important is that he took responsibility for his mistakes and truly made good on them, thus allowing him to be a reliable source of loving care for Cassie and, as such, a welcome addition to her life.

I have worked with biometric security professionally, installation and maintaining. You can usually trick it with a lot less work then this, but yes this would 100% work. Biometric security is so awful it is borderline being just a scam.
I have no idea on how it fits into degrees of technology, but a place I worked had us use a fingerprint to sign in (verification after typing in our number) to clock on, and off, and check our hours, and a coworker was able to use the side of her thumb to log in as her sisters index finger.

It being such a poor security measure in comparison to other options is also why most two-factor authentication is still commonly something you remember and something you have, not biometrics so much. Not to mention with how awful places are at keeping things like your social security info private, there'd be just as much a problem with biometric data being leaked if it were used more widespread and thus more valuable.
Edit: all in all, it's largest issue is that you can't swap it like everything else; you can rotate passwords or certificates but can't easily swap your fingerprints or eyes

The way they did the physical comedy in this with the visual effects was amazing. That bit where yellowjacket gets hit by the train is a great example. They are able to portray the train as much more real when zoomed in on the action but then abruptly remind you of the reality at the right moment. This is one of those heroes where the movie has to be comical cause the powers are so dang hilarious at times. The second Ant Man is really good as well.
9:11 -- the vacuum was a Kirby model. That was intentional, since Ant-Man was co-created by comics legend Jack Kirby.
9:29 -- that guy was Garrett Morris. He was one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live. He did a sketch where he played Ant-Man.

Fun fact, certain ant species work together to actually make water rafts, rope...etc. So what you seen in the brief sewer scene was accurate.
Fire ants certainly do. They use a similar technique to "diving bell" spiders in that they trap a layer of air against their bodies using small hairs and use that to breathe. The fire ants also use a sophisticated role-rotation system to ensure the "under water" ants don't drown.
Ants are also, IIRC, the only known species other than humans to actively farm, and they'd already been at it for a very long time before humans discovered agriculture. Most importantly, they are one of nature's primary garbage collectors. A lot of the ecosystems we rely on wouldn't exist without ants. Not bad for creatures that can barely be said to have brains.
When we lose a species, it's important to remember that we're burning billions of years of evolutionary R&D. The destruction of the Library of Alexandria has nothing on the Sixth Great Extinction (the anthropomorphic one. Yay, us?).

That was a lot fun, thank you Vicky!👏🏽They did a nice job de-aging Michael Douglas (Hank Pym) in the beginning. Coincidentally, when he was young (early 1970's) he starred in a cop show on TV called "The Streets of San Francisco".
I was also really impressed with the de-aging job on Michael Douglas. Of course, he was only one of the biggest movies stars in the world back in 1989, so they certainly had plenty of reference material.
Scott and Cassie's relationship is the best in the entire MCU, and I'm absolutely going to die on that hill.
Yeah, him being a dad is my favorite part of the character.
I'm surprised there isn't more anger at the ex-wife in the fandom, given that she is refusing to let him see his daughter until he pays child support even though he can't get a job. In the real world, child support and visitation are separate. If you aren't able to get a job, that doesn't stop you from seeing your children.

I feel like everyone reacting to Ant-Man has the same two opinions: 1) it's WAY better than everyone expected and 2) Ant-thony's death is surprisingly sad.
I'm glad you liked this and gave a particular mention to Michael Douglas in your post-movie thoughts. I think Hank is one of the best characters in the MCU.
I"m so happy you enjoyed it, you have no idea how underrated and under appreciated the Ant-Man films are. And Cassie is absolutely adorable. Perfect daughter. If you consider it, you'll quickly realize that for all Scott's problems, he is easily the second best father in the MCU. Behind Clint.

I love the dynamic between Scott and Hank in this movie. It's not a mentor/student dynamic, but just two dads who wanna make the world a better place for their daughters. I love how it was Scott who realized why Hank refused to let Hope put on the suit, because he's also a father and he understands Hank's motivation to protect Hope, which is also why he doesn't resent the fact that he's expendable.
“In like Flynn” was a saying in the 50s and 60s. Errol Flynn was a swashbuckling movie star of the era, who had a reputation as a womanizer. So to be “in like Flynn” meant you had it made in the romance department.
Actually the phrase is "I'm in Like Flint", In Like Flint was a spy movie from the 1960's, the guy in this movie said it wrong for comedic affect. If you've seen the Spy Who Shagged Me (Austin Powers 2) it's what Austin is watching before Vanessa tries to kill him.

Speaking as a native Californian - don't go to California expecting it to be anything like the movies, especially places like Los Angeles or San Francisco. The traffic is atrocious, for one, and you can't rely on mass transit to get around! 😵
I'm fairly certain that most movies at least since Falling Down (a Michael Douglas classic), Speed, and The Matrix have depicted Los Angeles traffic accurately....a horrendous nightmare that breaks the mind.
There is more to California than just the big cities though. But agreed the traffic in areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles is terrible.
@@gallegosm1000 Quite! You can easily snowboard in the mountains and surf at the beach on the same day. Though it always amuses me when people visiting Southern California in June are surprised to find it constantly overcast in the morning: "But it's summer!" Or that it actually _does_ rain once in a while - occasionally, it even rains in the summer in Los Angeles, though it is unusual.
Tourists and prospective college students: If you're going to California, make sure you bring appropriate clothing. While it's not likely to get below freezing in most urban areas even in the dead of winter, weather does actually still exist. It isn't a bright and sunny 85ºF all day everyday throughout the year. Special note for college students: make sure you bring a jacket or sweater. Lecture halls may well have the A/C running full blast on hot (or even mildly warm) days. Shorts, tank tops, and flip flops might be perfectly fine outside, but you'll be freezing your buns off inside.
Yeah that sums up the weather here. Though I live in northern California where we get hot summers and some cold sometimes rainy winters. Oh yeah, let's not forget the wildfires.
Well, the mass transit situation is like the movies in a sense, specifically "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?". That film takes place against the backdrop of the real-life sabotage and dismantling of LA's then world-class mass transit system by auto firms and governments for the purposes of selling cars and making bank taking illegal kick-backs from construction firms to bull-doze highways straight through thriving minority neighbourhoods.
It's all a rich tapestry of human depravity, and, as you noted, we're still suffering for the greed of those oligarchs to this day.
This is one of the ones that I've been waiting for. 😊
I love the "Ant-Man" movies. Paul Rudd was the perfect casting for Scott Lang aka Ant-Man. I'm already looking forward to the third "Ant-Man" movie coming out later this year or sometime next year.

Yep next year, this year is Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Agreed with the casting, actually Marvel in general has a good track record of casting excellent people for their roles with only a few blunders throughout the entire franchise in my opinion.

I think people get too attached to certain flawed protagonists so they fail to realise that they are indeed flawed and that just because someone's against them doesn't mean they're automatically bad.

And what the hell was Scott doing working as a cat burglar as a new father and the holder of a Master's in electrical engineering in the first place? Horrifically irresponsible to put his presumed desire for kicks over his responsibilities, and he didn't even have the usual "Jean Valjean" excuse of economic necessity.
@@Dead25m That's part of it, but I think it's also the way the film-makers cleverly played against that old Disney trope of the "nuclear family" being the only possible "good" family structure, which is, when you think about it, clearly nonsense. We expected Paxton to be evil because we're primed to immediate consider step-parents as evil, which is pretty sick, as it inherently excludes the idea that you could honestly love a kid that isn't biologically your own. Real life shows us that isn't true (as well as that lots of biological parents don't give a shit about their kids), and it's rather disgusting that we've spent so long denigrating people for such an admirable act.

There was a LOT of skepticism about this movie before it came out, with Ant Man not being a very recognizable character, but it sure did deliver. It's actually still one of my favorite MCU movies. Not only is the action and comedy top tier, but it's also really well grounded. It's really about family, especially fathers and daughters. The family relationships are so well done, and are critical to holding this film together.

When the Yellowjacket fires its lasers, it's actually a higher pitched laser blast sound effect that the giant AT-AT walkers from Empire Strikes Back fire during the Battle of Hoth and the two legged AT-ST walkers use in Return of the Jedi.

When Cross had Pym talking about the original tales of the Ant-Man, Hank dismissed them as 'Tales To Astonish'. That was the name of the comics that Hank Pym first appeared in. It was "The Man Who Fell Into The Ant Hill." He later developed the gear to communicate with ants specifically, and later he took on the identity of the Ant-Man.

The scene where Rudd first puts in the suit, the ending of that scene where he falls out of the window and on to the guys car is a nod to a old SNL skit called Superhero Party where the guy in the car played Ant Man in that sketch.

Was over a 100 degrees seemed like for 1/2 the year in Riverside California. Not being able to make ends meet working full time for minimum wage convinced me to go and learn computer repair and IT.
It's a very old saying, "In like Flynn"... in fact, they made a couple of James Bond spoofs in the 1960s (70s?) based on that saying:
"In like Flint" and "Our Man Flint".

The most I've ever learned about ants was playing the game Sim Ant on Super Nintendo. You find food and make scent trails to alert your nestmates. You wage war on the opposing colony. It's rad.

Hey, Vicky! "Ant-Man" surprised everybody! Despite Hank Pym being one of the five Founding Avengers in the comics, not even readers were clamoring for a movie version of the tiny hero. MCU fans were intrigued but wary especially after Edgar Wright dropped out as director over creative differences. Finally, everyone just decided to trust in Kevin Feige's grand design and did it ever pay off! The result was a spectacular superhero adventure with just the right mix of action, humor and heart! In the comics, Hank Pym's Ant-Man may have co-founded the Avengers with his partner Janet van Dyne aka Wasp, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk but his history with the team is a troubled one. He never felt his power set measured up to the other heavy hitters, he kept changing his identity with his size, he had difficulty reconciling his passion for pure research with an adventuring lifestyle, he had marital trouble with Wasp, he suffered a mental breakdown and, worst of all, he created Ultron! Tony Stark creates the killer A.I. in the MCU but Ultron is Pym's baby in the comics. Pym is actually happy to pass the mantle to Scott Lang when he comes thieving along in "Marvel Premiere" #47 which this film is based on. Lang takes to the superhero lifestyle and his relationship with his daughter Cassie is as depicted on-screen. Pym settled into a sort of emeritus position as tactical support and gadgeteer for the West Coast Avengers simply calling himself Dr. Pym which is similar to his function in the movie. Although he and Janet never had a child, he had an illegitimate daughter called Nadia he never knew about until she was an adult which mirrors Hope's estranged relationship with Hank in the film despite Nadia's very different personality in the comics.
Peyton Reed had directed a couple of successful comedies called "Yes Man" with Jim Carrey and "The Break-Up" with Vince Vaughn but had no experience with an effects-heavy blockbuster. You wouldn't know that from the end result which comes across as smooth and polished. In a departure from the New York-centric MCU, the setting shifts to San Francisco showcasing the West Coast city nicely. The script achieves a perfect balance of comedy, sentiment and thrills but also, crucially, gets the audience past any entomophobia it might have by making the hero's ant allies palatable. Differentiating the three species showcased proves to be fascinating and personalizes the little critters. Shrinking as a story gimmick is as old as "Alice in Wonderland" and has been iconically portrayed in films like "The Incredible Shrinking Man", "The Fantastic Voyage" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!" but the size reduction sequences in "Ant-Man" are truly wondrous and imaginative! Scott's first adventure throughout his apartment complex is a memorably dizzying odyssey. A hilariously clever motif is utilized that contrasts titanic insect-size drama with its insignificance when perceived on a human scale. However, it is with the introduction of the Quantum Realm where the film distinguishes itself. Known as the Microverse in the comics, the sub-atomic level of reality is represented as kaleidoscopic geometry and echoing stillness where the rules of normal physics don't apply. This is as true in our world as it is in the MCU.
The cast is great led by Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man whose long list of comedic credits and unassuming good looks make him an affable lead. In yet another remarkable casting coup for Marvel, a post-cancer Michael Douglas was cast as the prickly Dr. Hank Pym, inventor of the Pym Particle and the original Ant-Man who, in the MCU, is a former SHIELD operative prior to becoming a tech magnate. Evangeline Lilly of TV's "Lost" plays his estranged daughter, Hope van Dyne, whose adoption of her mother's maiden name as her surname speaks volumes about family tensions. Corey Stoll brings both pathos and menace to Pym's embittered protege, Darren Cross, whose unstable approximation of the Pym Particle serum fuels the Yellowjacket suit which actually was one of Dr. Pym's monikers in the comics. The supporting cast includes Judy Greer as Scott's ex-wife, Maggie Lang, Abby Ryder Fortson as the adorable Cassie Lang and future Young Avenger Stature, Bobby Cannavale as Cassie's stepfather-to-be, Detective Paxton, and Wood Harris as his partner, Detective Gale. Adding comic relief are Michael Pena as Luis, David Dastmalchian as Kurt and T.I.P. as Dave playing Scott's ex-con buddies with Pena's grapevine monologues making him a stand-out. In the secondary villain role is Martin Donovan as Hydra representative and former SHIELD honcho Mitchell Carson who links the current proceedings with Dr. Pym's SHIELD past in a prologue that features Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and John Slattery as elder Howard Stark. The digital de-aging done to make Michael Douglas look like his '80's self in that prologue is nothing short of incredible! Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka Falcon makes a surprise appearance that puts Scott on the Avengers' radar. In bit parts are Gregg Turkington as Dale the Baskin Robbins manager, Joe Chrest as Frank the skeptical Pym Tech executive, Jean Louisa Kelly as a Pym Tech employee who remarks on the founder's presence in the lobby, Anna Akana as a guerrilla journalist and Garrett Morris of "SNL" as a cab driver.
TRIVIA:
1. The Pym residence was the same house used for exterior shots of Halliwell Manor in TV's "Charmed".
2. The enlarged tank from Hank's keychain was a functional Soviet T-34-85 given as a goodwill gift to the US by Premier Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991.
3. The rights holders to Thomas the Tank Engine had a number of specific stipulations before permitting use of the character such as not having Thomas run down anyone tied to the tracks!
EASTER EGGS:
1. During Scott's escape from prison astride Antony's back, he flits through a trolley briefly alighting on a commuter's newspaper whose headline reads "Who's to blame for Sokovia?" which references the events of "Age of Ultron" and presages the events of "Civil War".

The fire ants frying the computers is also very realistic. Similar to some species of wasp, they seem to have an affinity for certain standing fields of EM radiation for reasons that, AFAIK, no-one really understands.

I love so many of the MCU movies from phases I through III but I think this one is my favorite of them all, just for the fact that it is different and stands out for the humor. Scott Lang is the absolute no-business-being-a-hero-but-is-anyway, and Paxton does end up being an absolute G, as you called him. Paul Rudd did great as the Ant-Man, and he will again too. 🙂

I am loving how much fun you are having with these movies. The MCU is truly genius work and you will just enjoy them more and more because of the way they weave everything together. And you are right, the casting and comedic repore is what makes these exceptional.
This movie was an unexpected pleasure, and it reflects Marvel's strategy.
It's not so much a "superhero" movie, as it is a heist flick with superheroes in it. :)

That line tells you what kind of man Scott Lang is. Yeah me made a lot of mistakes in the past but he is a good man and father, first and foremost,it shows how far he was and is willing to go for his daughter, that he was willing to sacrifice himself knowing full well there’s no return, that is a true parent, Avenger and hero right there.

When Ant-Man was released, it was top-3 for me. It's so different from other Marvel movies - better humor throughout, and the heist lends it much better structure. I still love this film.

"He's in like the Flynn" is a shoutout to a 60's spy movie named "In Like Flint" with James Coburn. Picture James Bond meets the 60's Batman series.
Nope. "In like Flynn" is an expression that goes back to the 1940s or before (and no, it probably didn't originally refer to Errol Flynn, though it quickly became associated with him). The title of the film "In Like Flint" (sequel to "Our Man Flint") was itself a reference to the existing expression.

I seriously consider it one of the best lessons to be taken from the MCU. Broken homes are a massive issue in our current society and way too many people don't/can't see how to avoid or reduce the damage of them.

So many people just look at people they read about as “good guys” and “bad guys.” Hank had that issue, too, and had seen SHIELD and Avengers as associates of bad guys.
I think it’s a combination of repeatedly broken trust in people’s past, and difficulty calculating complex characteristics of people. Nick Fury claims he doesn’t trust anyone, but he still seems to see good in people. He recognizes that good intentions can be misguided and manipulated into evil deeds, but can also be manipulated into heroism. He sure chooses to trust a lot of people to great extents, for such a paranoid guy.
Howard says a line that someone should have told General Ross. He says: "Hank is not a security risk, unless we make him one."
Howard is basically saying that Hank is not a petty person. even though he decided to quit, he won't just go out and reveal National Security secrets, "just because." It's a thing that EVERY military person seems to believe will happen by letting people walk around free. They immediately jump into Worst Case/Doomsday mindsets and end up always creating their own enemies by being unreasonable.
So I presume Howard is saying to just leave Hank the EFF alone and everyone will be fine.
What I find interesting about Ant-Man is that it is a mix of action movie and heist movie.

I enjoyed Paul's humor in this. He really can make serious situations less serious when he makes a joke. You'll enjoy the sequel.
