    Hey Mike... I love your content. Thanks for all you do. While trying this method with multiple tracks, I couldn't prevent it from editing all the tracks. I verified that ripple editing single track was selected, etc. So, I did some fiddle farting around and found two options to replace the middle two steps in your editing shortcut....
    - SWS: Split items at time selection (if exists), else at edit cursor (also during playback)
    - Item: Remove selected area of items
    So far, it works like a charm. Thanks again for all you do. I'm just getting started at VO after 30 years of dragging my heals (53 now) and really appreciate not only all the advice but also, the simplicity with which you provide it. Nice for the lay person.

    I had never heard of Reaper before seeing this series of videos. Mike, you are my HERO! I downloaded Reaper, and have followed the instructions in the video series. Getting rid of the music production aspects has been a godsend; they were always a source of frustration for me in Pro Tools, Adobe, Studio One, etc., but being able to customize Reaper for VO has been amazing! I was in radio for 37 years, but I decided after the last budget-cuts-driven layoff to get my CDL and become a truck driver. However, I have recently begun to explore the world of audiobook narration, and have started doing one for an author who happens to have been a friend since we were teens! Utilizing the methods shown in your videos for working in Reaper, the process is so much faster & easier than I have ever experienced before! In addition to audiobooks, I plan on starting and growing my own VO business, so once again I can someday use my voice to make my living; only this time, I can be my own boss and not be at the mercy of some corporate bean-counters somewhere! Again, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!

    Almost 5 years since you posted this how-to, and it is still making the world a better place : ). THANKS! Hey, one thing I do differently than you (at least as of some point in history) is use snap-to. That let's me make cuts and quickly connect two adjacent media items. That may not be necessary anymore using this new-to-me technique. Well, snap-to still has value when, say, I add space between words in the edit and insert "room tone". tl;dr = THANKS FOR THIS POSTING AND ALL YOUR POSTS

    Okay, I figured out how to do it. Couldn't sleep with it undone. Removed extraneous actions, and got it to do essentially the same thing,, but with a crossfade instead of a dip. It takes a few more steps to set up the action. I'll email the action and screenshots to Mike and maybe he'll update the video. Having the noise floor go to zero could be a BAD thing, especially if someone is using analog equipment that has a noise signature or software saturation like you get with a UAD setup. And you want a small, consistent noise floor for audiobooks, which is one of the best applications for this custom action.Glad I figured this out. Special thanks to the REAPER Blog and Kenny Gioia for providing the info I needed to make this custom action work the way it should! Keep your eyes peeled for the update as soon as I catch some sleep.

    Excellent stuff! I bought REAPER and ditched AA CC 2018 after watching this. There is also a quicker two step way:
    1.) Split Items at time selection
    2.) Cut Items
    And that's if you have ripple editing, crossfades, etc. enabled.
    I also set the A key to move the cursor to the point of the last edit, which helps. Thanks again!

    Love your channel. I've been binging! ... I have a HUGE barrier though: I can not highlight a section by dragging my cursor, in the time area.
    Click+Drag=Selection, simple, but it doesn't work for me. Is there a setting that may have been changed or that needs changing if I'm newly setting up Reaper?
    I can do the "S" splits and delete, ripple deleting and all that, etc, everything else works as it should.
    Using a Mac. Trackpad and mouse, default settings, function normally for everything else.
    (Already watched your informative Part 1 & 2 on Presets, among others, all helpful. Never once have I been able to make simple selections by clicking and dragging).
    Thank you! Keep it up.

    I realize this video is coming up to 5 years old, so maybe it's changed in Reaper which I just bought as I found your channel and soaking up as much info as I can (you inspired me to get the CAD e100s and LOVE IT). Has this been updated in Reaper? I edit my own work as well a other narrators in AA CS6 and would love to switch all my workload, but I'm confused as to do this in AA it's just a matter of highlighting (which you can do right on the track, not above it as in Reaper) what I want to remove and hit CTRL X. This also does not split the file, it keeps it one track so not exactly sure of the benefit of that happening in Reaper might be.

    Cool trick to use the "RIGHT click" to create a time selection (rather than selecting in the timeline)
    1. Go to Preferences: Editing Behavior: Mouse Modifiers.
    2. In the bar labeled context go to "Arrange View" and then go to "right drag" in the bar next to it.
    3. Double click on Behavior for the default action, under "Marquee select items" click on "Set time selection." The behavior should now read "Marquee select items and time"
    4. Hit apply.
    Credit goes to Vince Welch who posted this on the forum on gearslutz.com. Thanks Vince!!
    Also - As previously mentioned there is already a default action in Reaper for this: "Item: Cut selected area of items" with a keystroke assigned of "COMMAND+DELETE"

    Perhaps there's been an update, or maybe you could do this before, but currently with 6.23 there's a pretty straightforward way to ripple delete without custom macros. 1) Turn on Ripple Delete (by default there's a button above the track pane), 2) highlight the desired area, 3) Ctrl+Delete. Done. The custom macro is still good, however, for single key deletion.

    I know this vid is old as dust in video-years, but I use Music Creator 7 (I've been a loyal Cakewalk consumer for over a decade). I need to use to figure out if it can do the ripple thing. It's annoying trying to slide it over perfectly all the time. I do however use some Reaper plugins like Reafir. That thing is excellent. Maybe I should just get Reaper, but I'm a man of sentiment. It's hard to change what has always worked.

  • @ClaireWyattVoiceActor
    @ClaireWyattVoiceActor 8 лет назад

    Great video - thanks. So, you find the clicker system quicker than punch and roll? I'm wondering what would be easier for me. Also, I LOVE your quick editing using the Y key. But how do you factor in editing at the zero crossing point? If you're selecting the section to edit from the time bar you can't be sure it's at a zero crossing point.

    • @BoothJunkie
      @BoothJunkie  8 лет назад +1

      +Claire Wyatt I do find that **for me** the clicker has been faster than punch and roll, because I'm less likely to lose the flow of what I'm saying. Stop, rolling back, setting a punch point takes me longer than a click, especially if I retake a line more than once. Since I very, very, rarely edit mid-syllable, I'm always splitting at room-tone level. If I hear a click after a split, i just slide the track and make a tiny cross fade. If you're cross fading over already quiet room tone you never have to worry about a zero crossing point. Thanks for stoping by!

    • @ClaireWyattVoiceActor
      @ClaireWyattVoiceActor 8 лет назад

      +Booth Junkie I think I agree. It's faster. Sadly, my room tone has a higher noise floor than yours. Only by a few dbs but it means I have to be so much tighter with my zero crossing point editing. c xx

    • @BoothJunkie
      @BoothJunkie  8 лет назад +3

      +Claire Wyatt Try splitting using "ALT+Z" instead of "S" in Reaper, it'll put your split point at the next earliest zero crossing from your cursor. Maybe that'll save you some time! You could even remap the "S" key to do that type of split if its the one you do the most.

    • @BoothJunkie
      @BoothJunkie  8 лет назад +2

      Hi Kimberly, I'm not a big fan of punch and roll editing. I've practiced it, but still find it *much* slower than this technique. Punch and roll allows you to edit on the fly, but I find it takes me out of the flow and the "moment" every time.
      That said I will use Reaper's AutoPunch feature if I need to go back and fix a word or phrase after my edits are done. Its not my main editing technique.

    • @xaosnox
      @xaosnox 6 лет назад +4

      Not really, because Audacity actually DELETES THE SELECTION FROM YOUR FILE!! It's a destructive editor. In REAPER, it you accidentally make a mistake, It's a simple matter of just pulling the edges of the media item back to where you want them, then healing the split. If you mess it up in Audacity, well, that's why they call it Audacity. Because it's audacious. You'd be screwed. Audacity has no place in a professional workflow.

    This is a good start, but there is one problem with it. The way the actions are set up, if you have automatic fade in/out on, it will fade to zero at the point where the items come together. NOT good. You don't want your file to drop to complete silence. There must be a way to turn off automatic fades, spilt the item, turn auto crossfades on, have it pull the items together, then nudge the right item to the left just enough to get a smooth transition. I'm too tired to mess with it right now. If I play with it, I'll end up doing more harm than good, but I'll post back. And, yes, the second action isn't needed for the action as it is, but it probably will be when the crossfade part gets refined. Right now, it's splitting twice, and for some reason, when I undo it, it doesn't undo the splits, even though I've got it set to consolidate the undo steps. This needs a little refinement.

  • @vinny142
    @vinny142 8 лет назад

    FYI: the split appears to be optional indeed, if you run the action without a split and without a selection you still get an error message. (reaper v5.26)

    Nicely done video and thank you for sharing. I would consider Reaper if I was just starting out, or had not already been using my preferred DAW for the last 20 years (Logic) :^)
    Sadly for the VO community - neither Reaper, Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, Cubase - yet does spectral display audio cleanup - ala Adobe Audition or iZotope's excellent RX5, but once you discover spectral display and how easy it is to heal/remove/fade/soften audio debris (hey we ALL have mouth pops, clicks, and bump the recording chair or table sooner or later right?) you really dig in to a higher level of quality.
    Looking forward to some company tackling the true VO app release - a FULL featured DAW and spectral display cleanup (or better - just hit the make cool button from any tropical beach). Dreamin'.....

    Is there a fast way of editing tracks into separate files eg: 20 x 10s adverts all separate files. I feel so slow.

      Set ripple editing per-track
      Item: Split items at time selection
      Item: Remove items
      Go to start of time selection
