This is a very good general overviews of foreign power. Remember, each locomotive on a foreign railroad is not exclusive mutual. Railroads swap their power on a massive scale and as you said, the horsepower hours either even out or they pay the associated cost back to the owner railroad at the end of the month. At any one time class ones can have dozens of their own railroad on another railroad as foreign power. Power desk calculate that number and even the score. It’s a pretty interesting system
When I see a train with 5 engines, I always think some of them might be deadheading? You'll see 2-3 engines pulling a longer train and 5 pulling the same length or shorter.
It really depends on the train. On high priority intermodals, especially Z trains on BNSF or UP, you will almost always see around 4-5 units because it lets the train depart from stops quicker and also ensures available locomotive power in case a locomotive were to break down. For manifests, however, usually if you see that many locomotives probably only 2-3 of them will be online.
Fun fact, sometimes railroads can request certain types of engines for power hour payback. Somewhat recently CN had a bunch of 4 axle switchers in for rebuilds so they called BNSF to send over a boatload of switching power to pay back their power hours, which inevitably led to BNSF pulling said units out of storage.
Nicely done. Very comprehensive overview of how the whole foreign power/engine swapping works. Relatively new to railfanning so this clears a lot up for me! Interesting - I noticed that the UP power leading on the NS line didn't have alternating ditch lights when approaching a crossing. I knew they didn't use alternating ditch lights on UP trackage, but thought they would need to on someone else's track that did. Guess it isn't as easy as flipping a switch? Well done and thanks for sharing 🤠
Yeah, the alternating ditchlights thing is only a feature on NS and CSX locomotives (at least Class I railroad wise). Most BNSF and UP locomotives don't flash, and in the very slim chance you do see a UP one flashing, it's definitely because it was rebuilt from a previous locomotive that had flashing ditchlights. Good eye, fam.

I agree with the viewers who comment that this video gives us information on locomotive power sharing that is more informative and interesting than can be found elsewhere in railroad fanning videos. And that is great. Also, I do think that the narrator is a real live human being rather than a computer voice, which is marvelous. But, the human narrator appears to have had 14 cups of coffee just prior to the narration. I know we can slow down the video to slow down the voice. But that slows down the trains too much. I also know we can use subtitles, but then, at least with this video, you have to read the subtitles really fast or you don't get to see the trains. If the narration could just be slowed down a little bit, "Loco" would be the best rail fanning site on the internet. Granted, I am 78, so it could be argued that I am the problem. Still, does anyone else out there in RUclips railfan land want this narration slowed just a little? The filming, research, editing, and obvious intent of Loco to give us a great video is fantastic, and I cannot thank you folks enough for that. So, have I subscribed and clicked a like in spite of Mr. Rapid Voice's narration? Hell yes.

It cost NS 4000 dollars a day to run foreign power. If they don’t return with their own power. I had a train with UP power and the railroad wanted that power gone on the 1st train out
Dude! UP 6052 is up here with me in Altoona! I’ve seen it moved around the turntable. It’s on its own wheels now and is able to be rolled around. I think it left a little bit ago, though. I have footage of it at the turntable.
Up here in mass on the b&a we had an example of this where NS 22K that normally runs the B&M through hoosac tunnel and due to flooding the ns power had to operate as trailing run through power… tho the lead unit NS 8100 did not have proper ptc for this area so a ex conrail csx SD40-2 had to lead it, and we do have up, cn and bnsf, even cpkc power come through on joint bnsf/csx Chicago area orginating trains
Getting very flagrant with the 2102 teasers I see... More related to the video, we don't get as much foreign power in my neck of the woods, at least on the front. The Pittsburgh line requires that the lead locomotive have compatible cab signals, which rules out everything except (theoretically) for modern CSX GEs, although in a decade and a half trackside I have yet to see any of them, even. Great informative vid!

@@christopherstyle878 The only time you really see uniform cars like that is bulk trains like coal or grain. Otherwise, yeah it almost never happens. 😂
