    About From The Ashes:
    From the Ashes captures Americans in communities across the country as they wrestle with the legacy of the coal industry and what its future should be in the current political climate. From Appalachia to the West’s Powder River Basin, the film goes beyond the rhetoric of the “war on coal” to present compelling and often heartbreaking stories about what’s at stake for our economy, health, and climate.

    Please help me understand. Everything that we own and use in our daily lives is provided for us from this earth. Natural resources are essential to our survival. Is anything really sustainable once the human race decides it's necessary or desired? How are we supposed to harvest resources without any environmental impact? In my eyes, that's impossible.

    • @rhi6798
      @rhi6798 7 лет назад +15

      the definition of renewable energy is that it replenishes itself, solar, wind, hydro etc use natural resources yes, but nothing is used up so they're effectively carbon neutral and the overall environmental impact is almost zero compared with fossil fuels. I would also agree with your point on the basis of some aspects of production such as forming hydrocarbons to make plastics but even if this continued, the burning of fossil fuels to create energy has the biggest impact and the US has one of the highest capacities in the world to move away from that. Many countries in Europe are continually investing and increasing their renewable usage, a couple of weeks ago the UK was powered by 50% renewables and there have been many headlines of countries using almost 100% at times- it is possible to drastically cut down our fossil fuel usage and as a result minimise environmental destruction.

    It is a mandate/prohibited not to allow detonation of mountains, topography for the sake of coal production, as EPA, Kyoto Protocol, and OECD are implemented worldwide that does not allow unethical standards for the environment. It is of countries EU-UK, EU-ASIA, the Americas. The ethical standards are implemented as these are the cause of landslides and soil erosion on some parts, kilometers apart from the sites. Look at it this way: Coal will be used when it is cheaper than solar, wind, hydro, etc. The more coal we mine, the less there is to mine in cheap easy places, this leaves, the soon to be majority, in impossible to reach places, thus increasing the cost of coal above that of renewable resources forcing the planet to switch to renewable. This will increase the demand that will then end up reducing the cost to switch, making any new technology for mining fossil fuels useless. The more revenue created from the new market, the more will go into funding research and development for the few places that haven’t switched.
    Td:dr
    The world won’t switch to renewable resources until it is cheaper, which won’t happen until the cost of fossil fuels goes up or the price of renewable goes down. Both will happen when the world runs out of mineable fossil fuels.

    Anything you own that was not from a farm comes from the earth, and was mined or extracted somewhere. The device you are commenting from is made of metals and plastic. You are probably sitting in a house with heat or AC. Its so easy to sit and critisize the mining industry, but as long as there is demand, mining will exist. Responsible, sustainable mining is the key to limiting environmental damage. Casting mining as evil does not solve any problems.
    I'm sure National Geographic did their video edits from a nice air conditioned tv studio, and paid very little for that energy cost. Unless we are ok with going back to the stone age, we'll have to make peace with mining.

      renegade and Curtis: The costs of the others are getting there but still higher, the transmission system for gas is more expensive then for coal. The coke is just a more efficient way to heat, the coal (anthracite) supplies the enormous amount of heat for the reducing reactions to occur and the actual melting to occur. We still have a way to go to be able to afford to stop using coal, but we are getting there.

    • @whykhr

      Gas is cheaper than coal right now because Wall St Banks are keeping the Shale Gas bubble afloat with giant infusions of free or cheap cash, selling gas at $3/mmbtu when the avg production cost is $8/mmbtu. When the Shale Gas bubble bursts we will be back to coal, as happened in the 70's with conventional gas. Those abbandoned mines you can just replant trees and stop complaining. Nature can heal fast

    • @seigeengine

      Mate, even if it was just forest, forests take a century or more to develop. It doesn't "heal fast."

    • @fteambjj
      @fteambjj 3 года назад

      @@seigeengine yes and no but it can heal fast mate and my meaning of fast would be how fast can trees grow? Definitely doesnt take centuries for some trees to grow but for sure a few good years, some trees can grow 10 to 30 years even and those abandoned mines would be part of the forest again. These mines need to have programs like afforestration and strict regulations. There's always way for nature to heal fast. Sure it take years and perhaps for some trees it can take centuries but eventually it does as long as we leave it alone after. Implementing rehabilitation after a mine has been exhausted is a must everywhere in the world. We have the capacity to do it, but most times people can ignore it without consequences. You can never stop mining with todays demand and technology needs and greed but we can close the wound and let it heal afterwards.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 3 года назад +1

      @@fteambjj First of all, trees take a wide range of times to grow, and picking a tree that's quick just because it's quick is a poor strategy.
      Second of all, forests are not just trees. They are complex ecosystems that can take centuries to mature.
      Third of all, forests are composed of a wide range of trees and other plants, animals, insects, etc. which are hard to reproduce artificially.
      Fourth, none of this restores the mountain you have torn down.

      There really isn't anything smart about this comment at all. Thousands of jobs is really nothing in a country as big as the US, and coal is an out dated, inefficient, pollutant intensive energy source that only hasn't been replaced already because of lobbying from coal companies. There's no reason to keep using it. The three largest coal consuming countries (with 70% of coal consumption among them) and the US, CHINA, and INDIA. The latter two are still developing and are not any where close to as modern as the US. Do some research and you'll realize just how wrong this perspective is. Coal doesnt make ANY sense at all. Especially for a world super power with the largest GDP.
      (PS. I'm not some idiot "use solar panels only" liberal, I'm from a oil family, and my dad worked in a Coal mine to pay for school. I'm just a realist, and these are the facts)

      Lt. Feltersnach I live my life as environmentally friendly as I can. I live in a small house, use solar panels. I don't actually have a car. I use my bike as often as I can, and sometimes use public transportation. I'm saving for an electric vehicle. Bottom line is. I do what I can.
